How To Lose Friends And Alienate Other People ~ Social Equity vs Financial Equity

Read More: Social Networking

Are you treating your Twitter and Facebook friends and followers as financial equity…???

Are you treating your other social networking groups… Better Networker … Linked In ….You Tube … Meet UP … BNI as financial equity…???

Think about those questions for a minute…I will get back to them a bit further on in this post…

In 1936, Dale Carnegie, published one of the first personal development books to hit the market place…

"How To Win Friends and Influence People" …

It has sold over 15 million copies since its original publication…

Some of the major points covered in the book are…

Fundamental Techniques in Handling People

  1. Don't criticize, condemn or complain.
  2. Give honest and sincere appreciation.
  3. Arouse in the other person an eager want.

Six Ways to Make People Like You

  1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
  2. Smile.
  3. Remember that a man's Name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
  4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
  5. Talk in the terms of the other man's interest.
  6. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.

Twelve Ways to Win People to Your Way of Thinking

  1. Avoid arguments.
  2. Show respect for the other person's opinions. Never tell someone they are wrong.
  3. If you're wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.
  4. Begin in a friendly way.
  5. Start with questions the other person will answer yes to.
  6. Let the other person do the talking.
  7. Let the other person feel the idea is his/hers.
  8. Try honestly to see things from the other person's point of view.
  9. Sympathize with the other person.
  10. Appeal to noble motives.
  11. Dramatize your ideas.
  12. Throw down a challenge.

Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment

  1. Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
  2. Call attention to other people's mistakes indirectly.
  3. Talk about your own mistakes first.
  4. Ask questions instead of directly giving orders.
  5. Let the other person save face.
  6. Praise every improvement.
  7. Give them a fine reputation to live up to.
  8. Encourage them by making their faults seem easy to correct.
  9. Make the other person happy about doing what you suggest.

Social Media to me and my business is an integral part of building SOCIAL EQUITY ….

It allows me to become part of a community … to contribute to the community …

Giving back to others allows me to experience sheer joy and a feeling of satisfaction and gratitude that comes from knowing I make a DIFFERENCE in other people's lives…

Talk about a heaping helping of SOUL FOOD….

Truthfully….this wasn't always the case with my Social Networking efforts….

I had always heard "The Money Is In Your List"….

Whoever coined that phrase forgot a couple of important words….

The phrase is actually…

"The Money Comes Because Of The Relationship You Build With Your List"

When I first got started with Social Networking…

I treated my friends and followers…my acquaintances…fellow networkers like they were FINANCIAL EQUITY …..

They were weren't people to me … they were MONEY….

Pretty yucky huh….???

Guess what….

I got the results I deserved for that kind of behavior….

I LOST FRIENDS…

I ALIENATED PEOPLE…

I MADE NO MONEY….

Bravo Rose… MISSION ACCOMPLISHED…NOT

I have NO IDEA why I thought behaving like such a jerk would work on the internet any better than it does in real life…

So…I had to learn my lessons the HARD WAY….

The world is made up of people with souls…not money...

When I cook FOOD for people….

I actually find out what they like to eat…what they are allergic to…what kinds of seasonings work for them….if they are on a diet…if they have health concerns…

And when I have gotten to KNOW THEM…. I can cook for them … and GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT TO EAT….

And because I have taken the time to get to know them…they have also had the time to get to know me….

Because I cook exactly what is right for them … it shows that I have listened to them… and THEY LIKE ME….

Because I have served them well… they come back to me again and again and again…and they are happy ….

Because they are well served and happy …. I earn MONEY….

I earn MORE MONEY when they tell their friends about me…and their friends come to talk to me…

And…the cycle repeats….

God….The Universe…whatever your name for IT is…

Can only return to you…what you give to others first…

When I started treating my internet business like my cooking business…

EVERYTHING changed for me…

When I started treating my friends and followers LIKE PEOPLE….instead of ATM machines….

When I started interacting with people…listening to them…appreciating them…valuing them….giving back to them some of the things that I had learned along my journey…NOT EXPECTING ANYTHING IN RETURN….

EVERYTHING changed for me…

I am in business because I LOVE what I do….

I LOVE cooking for other people…. I LOVE my culinary brand

I LOVE Social Media and the brand that I am creating for myself on the network marketing community…

If that means I have to delay the opening of my own restaurant for a few years while I ethically generate the capital I need to do that…

SO BE IT….

I am committed to building a business that TRULY serves other people…

That helps THEM do what THEY want to do….

Because in the long run …

BEING OF SERVICE TO OTHERS FIRST…

Will be ultimately more rewarding both personally and financially for me.

Good Post

You know Rose. You really hit it on the head here. As an internet marketer, I can tell you that most marketers are missing the point when it comes to marketing...

Marketing is all about connections. If you can connect, you can sell. And what network (and internet) marketers miss is the "connection" part of selling.

Leo Dimilo — Thu, 12/10/2009 - 3:06pm

Excellent advice!

I personally have no problem selling things to people or asking for money, but I realize that there must be a level of trust between us and they must have expressed a need for what I have.

Derek Alvarez — Thu, 12/10/2009 - 4:40pm

Trust.

It's definitely NOT a good idea to argue.

If someone doesn't know me, or even seem interested, they are never going to sell anything to me... even if I particularly want that thing... someone else can sell it to me that I trust.

Charlotte Salafia — Thu, 12/10/2009 - 5:13pm

Trust is it!

"The Money Comes Because Of The Relationship You Build With Your List"

This single line, Is simply the truth of the matter! If you dont build trust, You wont be building anything else!

thanks Rose!

I love Dale Carnegie's work. Well written and ejnoyable article. I especially liked the "cooking for others" analogy. Much more enjoyable for everyone if you find out what people like first!

thanks again for the good post,

The Cooking Analogy

You have provided so much to think about!

"I actually find out what they like to eat…what they are allergic to…what kinds of seasonings work for them….if they are on a diet…if they have health concerns…

"And when I have gotten to KNOW THEM…. I can cook for them … and GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT TO EAT…."

And the more I think about the analogy you have provided, and expand the implications within it, the more I appreciate what you have written. Awesome job!

Great Post And Well Put!

Rose you've done a great job of showing people that you MUST find out what people want before you ever think of introducing them to your product or opportunity.

So many people try to sell pork to a vegan! Most network marketers TALK but never LISTEN! It's the basis of my "Success Cycle" ebook.

I believe that if more people listened to what people were looking for, and then gave the person what they wanted (because they have said it) they would find that they would make more money by introducing people to someone ELSES business, and then receive a ton of referrals from people who actually want what YOU have.

Keep up the great work Rose! I'll be a loyal reader of your work.

Thanks!

Social Marketing?

I was at a Michael Penland's Super Conference yesterday and Alan R. Bechtold talked about Social Marketing... there is not such thing! It is an oxymoron, because in a social setting, there can be no marketing or the social setting becomes a marketing setting.

He likened it to a time when some friends of his invited him to dinner and before the dinner was served, they had pulled out an Amway book and were showing him the plan. He said he never accepted dinner invitations from those people ever again.

When you build a social network, your goal is to build relationships, and that is all. You can recommend things, but that should be the extent of it.

Thanks for a thought provoking post and one that needs to be read by everyone who signs up to any MLM or network marketing business.

Easy To Read Double Space!

Thank you Rose for your article. Very easy to read doublespaced. Love to get in touch.

Arthur Tugman — Mon, 12/14/2009 - 10:06am

Wonderful!

Well said, Rose. I absolutely agree in providing service to others allowing THEM to get THEIR "stuff" accomplished.

It bugs me when I see email after email from the same people are only seem to sell something, in every email...whether it's their product or not. Financial equity in your list, as you said, is a poor way to go about it.

All the best,
~Matt Koshko

Nice Analogy

Thanks that's good advice. You were wise enough to look at your results from your cooking for others compared to your business efforts. Nice analogy..

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Hi Rose - That "ding" is the sound of you hitting the mark once again in reminding all of us what is so important, in fact critical, not just in our businesses but in our lives - GENUINE CONNECTION to others! You are a true leader, and your motives are pure and consistent. Looking forward to your next amazing post!

Holly Harris — Mon, 12/14/2009 - 10:47am

Social Equity

Very Important Rose sometimes we forget these basic rules. of our common goals as to longterm investment for each person we are involved with. Thanks for the reminder

Good Stuff!

Greetings Rose! Thanks you so much for your post. The points are just as valid today as when Carnegie produced them. Some seem so obvious, but are so easily forgotten. We need to revisit these from time to time to keep ourselves on track. Again, thanks you and wishing you much continued success.

Dale Carnegie Rules for Social Media

I never before connected this two things in my mind.

But that´s great.

Everything from "How To Win Friends and Influence People" is still uptodate for Social Media.

That´s the right way to do it.

It seems like Dale Carnegie has written it for Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and so on. :-)

Volker Schaefer — Mon, 12/14/2009 - 12:31pm

BINGO!

You hit the nail on the head! Excellent post!

Most of Important part of Network Marketing

This was a great article!!! You have to have some type of connection in order to sell your product or service. Without the connection there will be no point in even talking about what you have to offer.

Sherman Smith — Mon, 12/14/2009 - 4:42pm

Wow

This is a good article. I am new to network marketing and on twitter it seems that numbers are important and the pitch is paramount no relationship there three foot rule on steroids.

Cooking Soul Food for Social Media

Great article. It resonates with me right to the core. I really enjoy cooking (for my own family and others) and I felt completely identified with the analogy. My children are picky eaters and yes, I always have to find out "what they like to eat... what they are allergic to... what seasoning works...". I'll think about this article every time I cook and every time I'm socializing. Being sincerely of service for others will be more rewarding.

Fantastic article Rose! And

Fantastic article Rose! And the timing is very relevant for the end of the year where we are all (or should be) reviewing our year and what worked and what didn't. This article serves to refocus us on "connection".

Ian Brown — Mon, 12/14/2009 - 7:56pm

Socially Connecting

Rose!! I loved your article! It allowed me to see things at a whole different angle. I am impressed!

I too would like to suggest a good book... "How To Get People To Like You In 90 Seconds Or Less" by Nicholas Boothman. From these pages I have learned so much about people and of myself. He discusses about developing rapport and building relationships. It takes quite a bit of skill and practice. It is a must read for personal growth.

Thanks so much for a wonderful article. I will take your tips and ideas to mind and heart. All the best with your restaurant, Rose!

Awesome article

Wow. I have been down this road and you are so right on the money. Thanks, Rose!

Regina Schulz — Mon, 12/14/2009 - 11:42pm

Its Just that simple

People do business with people not a program. If you are not precieved as a friend with their intrests at heart, then there is no sale. Doesn't matter what the product is.

James Lockett — Tue, 12/15/2009 - 12:53am

What a great post

Thank you for such and interesting and well written article. I loved the way you related to your cooking and how true that is in life.

How to give without wanting something in return. Such valuable advice. thank you
