My biggest Twitter mistake so far
In a rush to get out there and let people get to know me, I was in a hurry to add Twitter followers. I followed many of the suggestions out there, adding people with similar interests and in niches I intended to market in.
There in came the problem, many of the people I ended up following were tweeting non-stop about their opportunity or business and it ended up flooding my feed of followers with spam. I was finding it very hard to discover content that was re-tweet worthy or join in any of the conversations going on.
With a help of a tool I've recently discovered. Tweepi.com I was able to discover and locate those spammers and get them out of my following list. There was no reason to follow them. They weren't paying attention to any of my information that I had to share. They were either entirely automated and not paying attention to anyone's information or I would assume only posting and ignoring everyone else focused solely on their own gain. I'm not sure about you, but myself I really don't want to do business with anyone that is going to ignore me. In addition, if I'm looking for people to join my business opportunity, I really don't want to affiliate myself with someone that feels I have nothing to offer them and just shuts me out.
You have to remember, Twitter is social media, which means you should be social. Your business will do much better if you're making connections and providing value to attract attention. Another mistake I often see is people that try to sell you something in their Auto-DM responder. This also inclines me to delete these people and shut them out. Again this only proves that individuals like this are only interested in themselves and probably not be around if you need help in the future.
My other mistake, however, is not un-following people like this right away and perpetuating a useless relationship, where I could have been spending my time cultivating decent relationship with my followers. I instead was over zealous in wanting to get the word out about me and what I had to offer thinking that I'd ignore their spam in the hopes that their followers would find me as well. This thinking is not effective at all either. In the end I think it only brought more spam and a lot of wasted time.
I do know though that many people are getting discouraged with Twitter, because it is too hard have a conversation being limited to 140 characters, but an effective tool around this is to transition your followers over to facebook and have your conversations there. I've also found that using bubbletweet.com for a 30 second intro video in your auto-responder is also an effective way for your followers to get to know you as well.
Well hope this might help some of you out there. All mistakes are something that everyone can learn from, hopefully you avoid this one or correct if sooner than I did. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please feel free to contact me.
