New Facebook Privacy Controls Rock!

If you haven't checked out the new Facebook privacy controls you are missing out!

There is one new feature in particular that can really help you stay in contact with your prospects. The new feature is called Publisher Privacy Control.   When you combine this feature with the ability to create lists in Facebook you now how some very cool power at your fingertips.

My goal for this article is to help you understand how you can use this new feature to your advantage.

What problem does this feature solve?
People have different groups of friends and interests.  Up until now Facebook didn't really help you control what information you shared with these different groups.

Suppose Network Marketing isn't the only passion in your life.  (What - how could this be?)  Well say you also have other businesses, or maybe a group of friends or family you don't want to share certain updates with.    In the past you could exclude people on a list, but you couldn't really target a specific  list.    This made it really difficult to do any kind of relationship building or sharing of info with people that represented different groups in your life.

Now don't get me wrong.  I'm not saying that you should create a list and just market to it all the time.  That's a quick way to getting  "unfriended!"  This is called social media for a reason!  You want to be social with people!  Not spam them!  You don't want everyone to be clicking the hide button on you or worse!

Instead, you should be sharing a ton of your personal life and helpful information that will help your prospects.  Let them see how cool you are and what a regular person you are.  Most of your normal posts should go to this list.  However, sometimes you may want to share specific information about your business with prospects who haven't joined yet and keep that information hidden from people in your other areas of life.  You may also have specific training or skills building materials that only apply to a certain group of people.  That was a pain to manage before in Facebook.

Now it is Easy!    Keep reading  for step by step instructions to find out how!

Here is a scenario:  Let's say you have prospects for your company that want to communicate with in Facebook.  You've done a good job of networking and people that may be interested in your business are starting to ask to be your friend on Facebook.   Here is what you could do.

Step 1:  Create a list in Facebook called "Prospects".  To do this click on the "more" link under you Newsfeed link on the left side of the main facebook page.  You should a box pop-up that looks like this:

Enter a name for your list like "prospects" and then add anyone from your list of friends to this list.  (Later as you accept friendship requests you can add them directly to this new list)

Step 2: Now that you have a list you can create posts in facebook that are directly directly at this list.  None of your other Facebook friends will be able to see the post!  Are you starting to see the benefits?!?!

To do this, click in the "what's on my mind" box and then click on the little lock icon that appears on the bottom right next to the share link.

Step 3: Now click on the custom link and you will see the below Custom Privacy box appear.

Choose "Specific People" from the drop down list and then type in the name of your list and click Save Setting.

Step 4:  You are now ready to type in your update.  It will only be visible in the newsfeed of people on that specific list.

How I recommend you use this feature.

    1. Start posting content on web sites like www.betternetworker.com that allows you to put your facebook link on your profile.
    2. Join a site like www.Lead-system-Pro.com that works with Magnetic Sponsoring and allows you to own your own list of prospects and include your facebook link in your email messages to your subscribers.
    3. Create a list of prospects and another list of people in your organization.
    4. Start posting information (not spam) of interest to those specific groups of people.

You will find that people appreciate getting good useful information  and your non-prospects will appreciate NOT getting this information even more!

    Stay Thirsty my Friends!

Long Overdue - I am sure they Knew they should do it before ...

I was so happy when Facebook released this. I have 2000 friends and it was crazy since half were real friends and half were marketing friends or contacts.

I would always have to censor myself and tone down the BIZ posts as to not drive the mother in law and high school buddies crazy. lol

Custom Idea!

James, thanks! I really like how Facebook is thinking. Anytime you can customize your message and target the right people, you'll win; just like creating content for a very specific niche.
I also appreciate the How-to directions. I find Facebook difficult to follow thru certain procedures, and your pictures lead the way.

Useful Information

Thank you for this information. Now I don't have to worry about some of my connections saying the "wrong thing" on my wall. LOL

Sherman Smith — Fri, 12/18/2009 - 7:09pm

wrong thing on wall

Hi Sherman - Just so you know, you do still have to watch out for people putting "the wrong thing" on your wall. :-) As once someone is your friend, they can still post something to your wall. At that point all your friends could see it. You can easily delete those posts if you want. This tip just allows you to selectivly show your own posts to groups of people.

Happy Friday!
James

Much appreciated

Thanks,

Although I have always have separate lists, this will help me keep my family/friends updates hidden from my clients/prospects and vice versa. Although it's okay for clients to see your playful side, you don't want them to see everything.
