Teach Me Internet Marketing: Do's and Don'ts of Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing can be a great Internet marketing tool when used correctly. It will allow you to brand yourself, and grow awareness of your brand. It can also allow you to meet, network and build relationships with like-minded people.
The most common error I see marketers making is leading with a sales pitch of their opportunity. On sites like Facebook, twitter, hi5, and others, people don't care about your business opportunity. They care about themselves.
Instead of pitching your business to people up front, lead with asking people about themselves. After all it is their favorite topic, and they will often love to share with you about it.
Lead the conversation by asking questions about them on topics related to what you want them to talk about. For instance ask them what they do for a living. This type of question may lead to them asking about you in return. That's when you can tell them about your business, but don't pitch it to them. Just be conversational.
You will be able to tell right away if the person is a potential prospect. If they express an interest give them a link where they can go to learn more. If they are not interested don't feel like you need to keep spending time on them.
A blog or hub page is a better place to send your potential prospects than a landing page. Your blog should b set up so that your visitors can really get a feel for who you are and what you have to offer.
A good way to achieve this is by having a Bio page, a business opportunity page, a links page (with links to your content, and other stuff that interests you), and any other pages you want that will help you express who you are and what you have to offer.
It can be ok to post an ad on your social media sites wall, but it is more useful to provide value in your posts. The more interesting and valuable you are the more people will pay attention to you.
Which brings up another point. Treat your posts like they were headlines, be dramatic, controversial, funny, or what ever it takes to get attention. Refrain from being overly negative, and never attack anyone.
If you really don't like someone's activity just break the connection. Personal attacks only make you look bad, and that will work against you.
Get a more targeted social media list by starting a group related to what you are promoting. Invite all of your friends to it, and have them invite their friends. You still want to lead with value in a group, but you can also promote your opportunity.
Remember to provide more value than pitch. People should, whether they ever join you in business or not, come away with something they can use to make their life better. That's value. If you can pull that off people will begin to promote you on their own.
So here it is again:
- Don't lead by pitching your business.
- Do lead by building relationships.
- Don't spend time on people who aren't interested.
- Do nurture the relationships with people who are.
- Don't send people directly to a landing page.
- Do send them to a blog or hub page.
- Don't spam your friends and followers with ads.
- Do provide valuable content.
- Don't be boring!
- Do whatever it takes in your headlines to get people's attention.
