Why You're Getting "NOTHING" at FaceBook & Twitter

Read More: Social Networking

From time to time I check my messages in Facebook.  Today I found a message from one of our students.  He's gone through the "Facebook" section at Renegade Professional and while he's learned how to use it to start adding people into his 'network,' he was stuck.

He writes:

"Hi Mike. I'm lost. Have gone through all of the facebook tutorials. I still don't understand "how" I attract or approach people through facebook. Am I contacting them, do I post things, not sure. Any direction would be great."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My response:

I wouldn't recommend contacting them unless they've sent you a message or contact you FIRST!  Yes, you'll want to put out 'content' in the form of messages, photos, videos (or start a group), which attracts your audience, builds your credibility and relationship and attracts interest so others reach out to you or click on the links you provide.

Facebook is a "fishing pool" tool as I like to call it. It's not where you provide the BULK of your  valuable & attractive content, but a place where you build a following as you've started to do by friending like-minded people... and then when you post videos, photos or text messages with a link to a blog post or video or lead capture page, you end up directing your audience to wherever it is you choose.

I consider the photos, videos, and text messages as the 'Attractive Bait' you use in the fishing pool, which gets people's attention and directs them to either more valuable content, or to a lead capture or sales page where you generate leads and monetize (and put people into an email system that continues to lead them to you).

You can also add your phone number at the end of your videos or on your text messages and will get phone calls, if that is something you decide you want.  However, this will only be effective if you have established yourself there over time by giving value and getting known (called branding).

This is the same way you would use Twitter.

You can't expect people to want to do business with you just because you have a Facebook account.  Millions have an account.  You have to use this tool to just get people's attention and lead them to "greater" levels of value you offer.  In order to do that, you need to have 'set up' some value elsewhere now, so you can direct your audience at Facebook or Twitter to it.

You have to use FB and Twitter along with the other social marketing tools and strategies we are teaching in Renegade Professional--you can't use FB by itself. It's a component of an overall plan.

Have you created any content (article, video, anything like that) of which your audience would be interested in?

Have you identified your target audience and their needs?

Do you have a place to lead them (lead capture or sales page) to collect their information and have you set up an email follow up system.

These are the other sections at Renegade Professional you have to set up, just as we're showing.  Follow the 90 day action guide and follow through on all of it, not only the Facebook tutorial section.

There is a way to give value at Facebook through setting up a group--this is where people can join who share a common interest and you can moderate the group's discussion.  It allows you to communicate with a much larger group of 'targeted' people as the group grows.

I suggest you hunt down Shelly Begarowicz (she calls herself the Rat Race Rebel) -- google her and find her. She has used Facebook groups to build a big list and has started to really get things rockin'.  Reach out and connect with others successfully using tools like Facebook and you'll get ideas.  Collaborate, connect, 'network'

The tutorials get you started, plugged in and comfortable with the tools, but then you have to put 'YOU' into the plan.

Start from the beginning at Renegade Professional.  Don't focus on only one small piece of it (like Facebook and Twitter).  Those work in harmony with setting up a blog or using other social marketing tools to provide value that attracts people to your business.

I suggest you start by reviewing The 7 Lessons to Attract Prospects to You which is in Renegade Professional, but also a free resource (search on Google).  This gets you started with identifying your target audience and their needs.  Without knowing that, you cannot attract a significant number of people through Facebook, Twitter, PPC or anywhere else.

Gone Fishing

Mike,

If you consider Facebook and Twitter to be "fishing pools", what would you consider Betternetworker to be?

Do you think of ALL social networking sites as places to go fishing? Or are there exceptions?

Thanks,
MELANIE

Good Post on Social Networking

Hey Mike,

I like your advice on the social sites. They are like the name says, "social" a place you mingle and have light conversation and get to know people and share info. Perry Marshall said, its like you are at a party on the social sites you do not necessarily talk shop. However, if you get them to your blog that's when the selling begins.

So, we have to remember to be sociable - light conversation, witty, and mind our manners. However, as the relationship evolves we most likely will have the opportunity to talk shop and invite our friend to our blog. Subsequently, get them in our sells funnel and give them good content (valuable and beneficial information). This way that friend just may become a "repeatedly paying" customer.

Peace

lovie

Fishin' on Better Networker

@ Melanie, I would consider Better Networker to be a Fishing Pool / Value Content Hybrid.

In "How I Built My First List" I discussed several components that make up a successful marketing process... two of these were:

1. Fishing Pools (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, a YouTube video, etc),
2. High Value Content Locations (your blog, a lead capture page that leads to more value, and/or a sales page that leads to more value--could also be your YouTube channel, as opposed to a video)--

There are other component as well making a total of 5; but to clarify why BN is a hybrid of the ones I mentioned above, I'll focus on these two here.

High Value Contribution and Major Branding....

At BN you can create content that is high value and you can build a presence. Through the high value content and an established presence you are able to build an audience. This is comparable to your own blog or website--or a high value marketing process that builds a strong relationship and allows people to know what you stand for (the makings of creating a following or 'tribe').

At BN; however, you don't own it, so you can fully manage the tone and message, and you're competing with others, where as at a standard 'high value location' like your own blog or site (or marketing funnel) you have the audiences sole attention. On the flip side there is an audience of people you can top into here at BN that you weren't solely responsible for getting here. By posting content you are able to provide short info bursts of value and lead people to your blog, lead capture pages, etc--as long as its done mindfully and with emphasis on value to the audience and respectful to the other contributors here. In this way it is a fishing hole.

So, yes, I see BN as a fishing hole--a place to put out value bait that attracts people to other locations. But is is also a place where you can give tremendous value (in the form of articles that can be extremely helpful to the reader), and in that way it is a value content location.

@ Lovie, I'm a bit more direct in the way I use social networking sites and stay almost entirely focused on business. But this is because I drive most of my traffic to my social networking locations so my audience there took the initiative to follow me so they can get business related tips and topics. That is how I recommend everyone use it, though I know others go about it a different way successfully as well.

Social Media Networking vs. Social Media Marketing

What I hear from your article is a common misunderstanding. The misunderstanding is that of social media networking and social media marketing. There is a difference between the two, and the two of them have to work synergistically together.

Being unable to differentiate between social media networking and social media marketing is a problem in and of itself. It can be a costly mistake in the form of wasting time.

All in all, Social Media in and of itself takes different forms depending on where you are looking. This is accomplished using different technology. It’s the technology that creates an application.

•Some of the forms of social media include internet based forums, weblogs, social blogs, wikis, podcasts, pictures and video.

•Some of the technologies include blogs, picture-sharing, vlogs, wall-postings, email, instant messaging, music sharing, crowd sourcing, and voice over IP.

•Some examples of applications are Google Groups, Wikipedia, MySpace, Facebook, MouthShut and Yelp, Youmeo, Last.fm, YouTube, Flickr, Twitter.

Social media networking is the engagement and connection of people using social media’s forms, technologies and applications to build relationships.

The premise is that this connection and engagement will expand business reach, and provide your services to more of the people who need and want them.

Social media marketing is a set of methods for generating content publicity, and circulates it in massive distribution through social media’s forms, technologies and applications, and includes branches of the social web like online communities and community websites.

When using the social networking properly, it's easier to market your content, and the results will be more favorable.

FB Blasting

People who are on facebook that are spamming to get people into their list end up doing more harm than good. Most people will hit delete and go on about their way - but adding content they can relate too and information that provides value gets them interested in what your doing and causes them to look at you closer. FB is a tool not the meat to the meal. People like to know you and learn who you are and what your like - if you connect it can then go to the next step.

Great Analogies

Fishing is a great analogy. I also like the concept that somewhere along the way you have to put "You" into the equation. SO many people think an automated traffic system or a social network will do all the work for them. Do all the work for who? Exactly! If there is no "You" there with content and advice then all the automated marketing in the world won't help because the traffic has no solid place to to go to. Kevin Thomas

Nice Distinction

Very good distinction Eric. I hadn't separated the two in my thinking before, but it is a good way to break down the strategies. Kevin Thomas

It's In The Value

Value and Benefit

Always ask yourself these questions. What value and Benefit are my audience getting from my content.

Keeping Your Commitments:
The fastest way to build trust in a relationship, any relationship is to honor your commitments. Being successful in business requires solid relationships that are based on trust. Say what you're going to do, then do what you say you're going to do. Make commitments carefully and keep them. Keeping commitments is a simple symbol of your honor.
