The Two Reasons Most People Fail at Internet Marketing— and the Three Ways to Avoid Them

Read More: Marketing

Yes, there are people who earn a lot of money with Internet marketing. I'm one of them.

If you want proof, just take a look at my website.

But the fact is that a lot of people who become involved with an Internet business don't even come close to the success I've had.

In fact, a lot of them fail outright.

Why?

Part of the clue is in the first sentence of this article, in which I said that “there are people who earn money with Internet marketing.”

Because that's the key word you need to remember: earn. One of the biggest reasons I've seen people fail at Internet businesses is that they think that all they need to do is throw up a website and the money will just start flowing.

There's a name for that. It's called the lottery. And it's for losers.

The other major factor involved in Internet business failures is ignorance. People start a marketing business with no idea of either what they really want or of what's possible. They don't know what companies are good and what to look out for.

But that's just ignorance. Ignorance is curable—if you're willing to work at it.

All that said, here are 3 steps to overcoming the 2 major pitfalls faced by new Internet marketers, false expectations and ignorance.

1.    The Internet allows you to work where and when you want to. You still have to work. That's right. Internet businesses are still businesses, and you're going to get out of yours what you put into it. This still leaves you a lot of freedom. If you want your Internet business as a hobby there's no fault in that.  Just be clear that you're going to earn a hobby-level income.

2.    Know yourself. Don't just pick an Internet business based on a spur-of-the-moment enthusiasm you have. Before you're going to succeed at anything, you need to know the strengths and weaknesses you're bringing to the table. More, you need to know what you're passionate about besides earning money. You'll come to hate your Internet business almost as much as your corporate job if you don't build it around your passions.

3.    Research. Research. Research. Knowing the kind of Internet business you want to start is just the first step. Now you need to learn who your competition is. You need to find out if the company or companies you want to affiliate with are ethical and have good reputations. And you're going to have to wade through a lot of choices of business models, from turnkey systems to creating everything from scratch.

Obviously I've just scratched at the surface when it comes to the things you need to learn before you'll be a success at marketing or any other kind of Internet-based effort.

The whole point of this article, though, is just to give you an overview so you'll have a better set of expectations and you'll realize up front that there are a lot of things you need to learn.

But don't worry. Because while you've got a lot to learn, there are lots of fantastic resources out there. Check out my website and those other sources, put in consistent effort, and learn what you need to learn. That way, your Internet marketing business will soon be on its way to success.

Excellent Information

Thank you, Michael. This is great information for everyone in marketing. Over the past 6 months I've found that there is almost too much information out there, too many people claiming to be mentors, leaders, and experts, making it almost impossible to decide who you should listen to.

I finally came to the decision to read as much as possible, but not to act, as you mentioned, impulsively. Reading and learning is not the misguiding part, it is all of the rabbit trails you can get sucked into that misguides you.

I've found that Better Networker is a good source of information where you can learn from people without risk and who know what they are talking about. Then you can pare down the numbers, find someone who you connect with and do what they do.

Thank you for providing such great material and nuggets for success.

Awesome and Valuable Advise

Hi Mike,

This is indeed true... I was once a victim of this lie. I thought having an online business is all about having a replicated website and throw it out there. But later on I realized that you have to learn about marketing. Identify what method you love most and master it and then identify the things you're passionate about. The internet is just a tool for building relationships faster than ever before. You have to have capabilities so people will trust you. As a result they will see you as a leader and will follow and join you as long as you continuously provide valuable contents to them. This is really where the money starts to come in.. You should be willing to give first without want before you can have. Learn learn learn and share your knowledge freely to others who are looking for your help because Persistence and Determination alone are omnipotent.

Work It, Take Care Of It.

The twin instruction to Adam, when shown the garden of Eden, could not have been simpler: work it, take care of it. Nobody prescribed hard work the way of the carabao. Not even smart work. Just take care of your garden - slowly, surely, fruitfully. Do not hunt money; let it hunt you. And avoid jargon hurts other's sensibilities.

Internet is more work than expected

Many people think you can make $10,000 per month while only working 2 hours per week online. As you said in the article this is still a business and you must treat like a business.

A Must Read for A Wanna Be

This info clearly needs to be passed on to the person who is looking at network marketing as an easy way of making a living. It takes a lot of work and committment.
There are so many people out there that think "this is it, I've found my pot of gold. I'll sign up, take a little stroll over the rainbow and be rich." Wrong.

Totally agree with your viewpoint

You are so right when you say you have to treat this as a real business. I find that people think they will get rich quick without having to work for it. The more you put in, the more you get out...just like everything in life. Education and knowledge is key! Great job getting your point across!
