Make a Video Online and Get it Watched!

How to make a video onlineWhether you’ve ever made a video before or not, I applaud you for being here right now, reading this.

As I speak with more and more people who are interested in making videos, I’m shocked at how many refuse to take the steps to actually make one.

Because you’re here, I assume you already know why to make videos online.

Maybe you already know that more time is spent watching videos on the internet, than time spent watching the top 3 TV stations combined.

Maybe you already know about the shocking results of a study done by The Kelsey Group?

When consumers were asked about the actions they took after watching an online video, research showed that

  • 55% checked out the website
  • 30% went to the store
  • 24% made a purchase

Make an Online Video, No Excuses

One thing that disappoints me is when people tell me they can’t make videos because they are not attractive enough.  I hear this WAY more than I wish I did.

Making your first video, or even multiple videos if your first haven’t been the hits you wanted, is SCARY!

It is NOT easy for most people, no matter how they look.

Question: Do you really look so repulsive that making a video will do your business more harm than good??? I doubt that.

Think about this.

One of the big reasons for doing video is to have an impact on peoples emotions, more than words can do. “A picture’s worth a thousand words”, and we all know how music moves people. You can use both in your videos…

No matter how you look, there will be people that connect better with you than with the majority of others out there.

No matter how fat or skinny you are, what color you are, how young or old you are, what you look like… THAT is not the important thing when making videos.

More important than all of that is the way you present yourself in front of the camera.

  • Are you confident
  • Do you look put together
  • Did you bother to brush your hair
  • Do you look sloppy
  • Does your background look sloppy
  • Does it look like you CARE?

Make Your Own Video Online- 1st things 1st

What type of video is it?

You have a few choices here.

  1. You can have yourself, or spokesperson, in front of the camera.
  2. You can create a presentation, such as Power Point, and record that.
  3. You can create a tutorial, using screen capture software

Each of those has its time and place, depending on what your goal is with your video. You can even combine them if you like (I do this a lot).

Know the desired outcome before recording any of it.

Is your goal to be funny, teach something, share an insight, brand yourself or your business, just to have fun, show yourself or others having fun…?

Use the right equipment.

I recommend the Kodak Zi8 camera, for it’s simplicity and ease of use. You should also consider getting a small mic if you’ll be recording outside (wind), or in a crowded place.

If you plan to do any presentations, you’ll want Power Point.

If you plan to do any tutorials which require screen capturing, you’ll need to get a good screen capture software.

I won’t go into much detail on recommendations, appearance and presentation, creating your Power Point, using the screen capture software, or loading it on YouTube and getting more views.

I’ve covered all of that in great detail both in my 4 day video course and other posts…

How to Make a Video Online – 5 Steps

Let’s get down to business…

Step 1. Plan out your video.

What do you want others to think and feel after watching it?

Put yourself in their shoes, what do you need to say, or show, in order to get the desired result?

Step 2. Record the video using your desired method.

In front of the camera, a presentation, or screen sharing tutorial…

Step 3. Edit your video.

Don’t miss this step! Proper editing can drastically add to the quality of your video.

Spend some time here, or outsource the help for it. If you do a poor job, it can create a fuzzy, choppy video.

Step 4. Upload your video to the Internet.

YouTube is free and popular (Check out How to Make Money from YouTube for a real wake up) .

There are dozens of other great video sharing sites, so use as many as you like.

Sites like Screencast, have both a free and paid version, and are really great for professional and private videos.

Maybe you have your own video hosting site, that’s great, use it!

Step 5. Get the word out.

Don’t just sit quietly and wait to be noticed.

Get the word out and make some noise about your video.

Promote it, if you don’t, how can you expect anyone else to???

Additional Tips to Make Your Own Video…

1. Engage people. With all the information out there now, you need to stand out. Your videos will stand out from the rest if you make them interesting and entertaining.

2.  Authenticity is your golden ticket. No matter who you are, or what you look like, there is only one of you! Use that to your advantage. Let others see who you are, be authentic.

People can see through an act, but they will get to know you, like you, trust you, and be more likely to do business with you if you are truly authentic.

3. Is it Congruent? Your title, description, keywords/tags, and video content all need to be congruent with each other.

One sure way to annoy people and lose their faith in you, is to claim your video is one thing, when it’s actually something entirely different.

Besides, you want people watching who WANT the information you’re providing, not those who don’t care. The ones who WANT the information/entertainment are the ones who will share it, talk about it and help it get noticed!

4. Call them to take Action. Remember the study results I mentioned earlier? If someone likes your video or information, they will want to take the next step. Make it easy for them and tell them what that step is!

Send them to a URL, give them a phone number to call, a place to go… Make this a no brainer, something they hardly have to think about.

5. Let them share it! Make sure it’s super easy for them to share your video with everyone they know.

If you’ve loaded it onto YouTube, make sure you’ve left it so they can, not only share it via their favorite social media site, but they should also be able to embed YOUR video onto their blog of another site they want to share it on.

Bottom Line:

Making your videos and getting them online, and even viewed and popular, is NOT rocket science.

It does mean taking the actions to DO IT though, no matter what.

Put all excuses aside and start making them. Be consistent with it if you expect to see awesome results.

I’d love to hear your feedback.

Video marketing

Hey Susanna,
I completely agree with every thing your article. I finished a few weeks ago, a video challenge, called Youincstar. In this challenge, there was about 30 participants, it was a free event hosted by Richard Bravo and Joyce Penner and there was a judge pannel to give us advices, on how to improve our posts. The challenge was on for 7 weeks and we had to post a video every day. I decided at that time to go for it, thought it would be fun to enter the challenge, but I realized very fast that I had my back against the wall, because I didn't want to be eliminated. So, I did challenge myself, to post a video every day, during 7 consecutive weeks, with a different subject like the company, product, how to, personal development, mentors-influences and every Sundays, an entry journal to talk about our challenges with creating videos. Up until this time, I have always started something, but never really finished whatever I started, also called procrastination. So,I didn't want to procrastinate and get kicked out of this challenge. It was hard at the beginning, but after the first week, every thing became easier, smoother and we were able to communicate with the other participants.I am looking to use video marketing for my business and anything else. I would recommend anyone to enter your 4 days of video marketing teaching. Keep up the good work Suzanna.

Wow that's great!

First Patrick, I have to say CONGRATS on finishing that challenge!!!

That shows a lot of strength and determination and I think it's awesome that you did it!

I did see that they were holding the challenge when they first put it out there, I hadn't heard much about it while it was going on though.

Video has a very heavy impact on your business, so I really hope you're able to keep it up and experience it yourself.

Thank you so much for the great comment!

Susanna
