Mistaken Identity or Identity Theft
Author: Andrew T. Martinez
Recently my godfather and I took a trip down to Baja California, Algodonez, Mexico to be exact. Crossing the border was no problem and we enjoyed our visit. On the way back however we encountered some interesting circumstances…after giving our birth certificates and DL’s to the border patrol we were asked to pull into one of the inspection areas because we were “randomly selected for a search and seizure”
The US Marshalls then escorted us into a trailer, them walking backwards with their hands on their guns. I would ask kindly, “what’s going on?” and all they would reply was, “you’ll know soon enough.”
After sitting there for a while, a rather large US Marshal asked me to go into the next room with him. When I walked in I saw handcuffs hanging from the wall and foot area of a chrome bench. I was asked to empty my pockets but was still not informed as to what was going on. As I reached into my pockets I said, “ Well, since you haven’t told me while you are detaining me and are about to arrest me, I’m going to go ahead and get my attorney on the line and maybe you can explain to him/her why you haven’t even read me my Miranda Rights.”
All of a sudden I became Mr. Martinez. “Mr. Martinez there is no need to do that, we seem to have mistaken you for someone we are looking for, you fit the description.”
