Is MLM the Perfect Business Model? Take Score & See For Yourself

When it comes to MLM, speaking about perfection borders on lunacy! So I must explain that I owe the idea for this article to the venerable Richard Russell, the author and publisher since 1958 of the Dow Theory newsletter.

In an article that he has republished on request several times over the years, Mr. Russell cites 12 criteria he recommends we apply to our search for a perfect business or job. The more of these you can fulfill, the closer you'll be to that idyllic situation. *The web address to read the original article is below.

Please note that Mr. Russell is not explicitly endorsing MLM as a business model in his article. However, once you look over this list you should agree that implicitly he seems to be doing so.

If you're already in a networking or MLM company or are looking at a business you're thinking of joining, you might want to take score and see how it stacks up.

The 12 Criteria for the Ideal Business

The ideal business:
1.    Sells to the world.
2.    Offers a product that enjoys an inelastic demand, a product that people need or desire.
3.    Sells a product that cannot be easily substituted or copied.
4.    Has minimal labor requirements. (the fewer personnel, the better).
5.    Enjoys low overhead.
6.    Does not require big cash outlays or major investments in equipment.
7.    Does not tie up your capital with lengthy or complex credit terms.
8.    Is relatively free of all kinds of government and industry regulations and strictures.
9.    Is portable or easily movable.
10. Satisfies your intellectual and often emotional needs. (A crucial point that's often overlooked says Mr. Russell. "There's nothing like being fascinated with what you're doing. When that happens, you're not working, you're having fun.")
11. Leaves you with free time. It doesn't require your labor and attention 12, 16 or 18 hours a day.
12. Super important - The ideal business is one in which your income is not limited by your personal output.

While Mr. Russell may be right when he says the ideal business doesn't exist and probably never will, I'm not shy in sharing this with you: I scored 11 out of 12. How did you do? If you'd like to discuss it, shoot me an email.
