If You Love the Products, Great … Become a Consumer!
As I mentor, coach, and support Network Marketers I am always interested in why they chose a particular business opportunity. When I ask the question, 8 times out of 10 the response is because they loved the products, (the other 2 times it was because it was recommended by a friend or family member). My response to this statement is; “If you love the products then become a consumer”. This is not a sound rationale to invest in and build a business that will impact your life and the lives of your family!
It’s not about what the business owner loves. It’s what the audience will love that will determine the success or failure of a business.
I have joined several MLM companies and have found that most have great products. As a testament to this, even after leaving the opportunity, I still use many of the products from long gone MLM efforts. However, what most MLM companies are lacking are business models and compensation plans which are fair and equitable for the marketer.
In my investigations of MLM opportunities I have discovered compensation structures that require from 400 to 26,000 distributors in order to generate $10k in monthly residual income. I’ve also found opportunities with policies and procedures ranging in length from 3 to 137 pages. These 2 facts have led me to 3 very important conclusions.
1. No one should join an opportunity which require that they work 10, 20, or 30 times harder for their compensation
2. The longer the policies and procedures documents the less likely the marketer will read the entire document, and the more places there are for companies to hide the unfair clauses that can ruin a marketers business
3. Everyone needs someone who is knowledgeable about the MLM industry to help navigate around the pitfalls and provide support as businesses are built.

I struggled with that too
If you love the products become a consumer - it's not a sound reason to join a business. Hmmmm I agree with you but what about that customer of yours who loves the product so much they tell everyone they meet. They're excited (what every business owner should be), they buy the products every month (eligible for compensation), they get others interested and or excited. Wouldn't that make an ideal business partner? Imagine if they were excited about the product and the compensation they are getting?? That would be ideal if you had several of those very type of business builders on your team - I would think.
But ultimately you are right. Business builders should have an entrepreneurial mindset with at least some business sense.
Great article to make us think - who is our target market?

From Your Mouth to Gods Ears :)
Hi Joyce,
Thanks for reading and commenting. That customer you described is a network markteters dream! Their love of the product could not only generate more customers, but I am sure some of those customers will have, as you so succintly put it, an entrepreneurial mindset with at least some business sense, and will be potential new business partners. I think we have just defined our target market!
