Working From Home: Coaching Cognition's Mother-Daughter Team

Barbara Silva, author, educator, coach and home business entrepreneur, is thrilled that her daughter, Kendall Silva has joined the Coaching Cognition team that Barbara heads up.
Kendall majored in psychology at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. Kendall realized early on that psychology was a perfect fit for her when in high school she determined that helping others was something that came naturally to her.
Watching her mother, Barbara, who enjoys working from home, go from learning how to do online marketing helped by Mike Klingler and Renegade Professional --then brand herself as an educator, author and coach--was awe-inspiring for Kendall. Kendall decided that she wanted to try her hand at marketing something that was near and dear to her heart as well.
Another Home Based Business Entrepreneur is Born
When Kendall first dabbled with her own online marketing, she used her love of music as her niche and chose young teenagers as her target market. Kendall also writes, composes and sings her own songs. MySpace is where she decided to showcase her musical talents.
Being a chip off the ole’ block, Kendall began by visiting other people’s MySpace pages and leaving genuine and sincere comments. Kendall never mentioned her business nor did she do any self-promotion when leaving her comments. She comes by Attraction Marketing very naturally.
Social Marketing Rule Number 1 - Never Self Promote
In a few short months, the people for whom Kendall left comments began to visit her MySpace page to see what she was up to. They left their comments for her, too. But more importantly, Kendall’s fans were listening to Kendall’s lyrics and enjoying her music! Mission accomplished! Kendall now has a community of people who look forward to her next project and she’s sure to over deliver and impress them!
A Home Business Opportunity: The Coaching Cognition Bug
It’s easy to see that Barbara and Kendall Silva enjoy a very easy-going mother-daughter relationship. They are very in tune with one another and often finish each other’s sentences. When Barbara’s home business opportunity, Coaching Cognition, started gaining momentum she knew she needed help. That is when she first hired Kendall to write an article for her coaching web site while it was still in its infancy. Kendall quickly decided that she not only wanted to write the article but also become a part of her mom’s team.
With her counseling background and her love of helping others, Kendall felt that coaching would be a natural transition and next step.
Kendall states it best when she says that one of the advantages to working from home with her mother is, “I get to see her! Working with her doesn’t feel like work at all.” When pressed for any disadvantages to working with her mom, she coyly whispers, “I’ll tell you about that later!”
Making a Home Business a Family Business
While she works with Coaching Cognition, Kendall also works a full time job in the retail industry. Shortly after deciding that coaching was a good path for her, Kendall’s retails company created a new position for her. They realized her natural talent and gift for taking her co-workers skills and enhancing them utilizing her coaching background. Hmmmmm…anyone else seeing the Law of Attraction working here?
Kendall and Barbara are having a wonderful time working from home together developing the training classes that will be used to train future coaches of Coaching Cognition. One of Kendall’s favorite things to do with her mom is to come up with innovative and fresh ideas that bring about a mental image to help others grasp a concept they are planning on teaching to others.
Fun Fact about Kendall Silva: At the tender age of 8, she invented the “Unburnable Flag” in response to the controversy in the news at the time about freedom of expression vs. desecrating our nation’s symbol. The flag is now housed in the George H. Bush’s Presidential Library and she received a letter from the President himself.

A Home Business -A Family Business
This article is so inspiring, especially for those people thinking about starting their own business from home. This is a perfect example of how working from home can involve the entire family. This can really bring an entirely new dynamic to the family and create even stronger bonds and relationships.
That's just the business side of this article. The other is about Coaching Cognition. What a fantastic idea and program that Barbara Silva has created. She is such a gifted, talented and giving individual as is demonstrated by her ability to coach and train others. Thanks LeeAnn for sharing their inspiring story.
It Doesn't Feel Like Work at All
This article is a great example for anyone that is thinking about a home based business becoming a family business. It is fantastic to read about someone, like Kendall, who is educated and talented finding an entrepreneurial niche so early in life rather than just automatically buckling in for 'job'.
There are so many horror stories and warnings - 'don't do business with family' - that it's refreshing to see a very positive experience.
My daughters have worked with me at times, and we've enjoyed it - I know I've enjoyed it!
However, I don't think I've ever gotten the Highest Compliment - "It doesn't feel like work at all"
That has to be the best thing in the world - what an inspiration!
Michael
Kendall & Barbara are having a wonderful time working from home
Families doing business together - the concept and practice is an old one, but doesn't it make more and more sense in this new millennium of entrepreneurship (especially on the internet)? It sure does.
I know what a HUGE endeavor the Coaching Cognition program has been from day one, and how many talented people have been needed to make this happen.
What is remarkable to me is that Barbara didn't have to look any further than the dinner table. I am learning, and you will notice for yourself when you watch the video by following the link at the top of the article, that Kendall Silva is a rare gem cut from the same fire as her mother.
It has always been a pleasure to work with Barbara - I've always called her my "pseudo mom" because of the closeness we've shared, and her ability to always be there for me when I needed a sound board or strategic coaching to get me over a hump. Sometimes it was just her wisdom. She is family. And I now look forward to building relationship with Kendall. I know what a talent she is.

Family is Not Just by Blood Only
Eric, what a wonderful compliment to give to Barbara. Referring to someone as your "pseudo mom" is the ultimate. I know it warms my heart when my teenage son's friends call me "Mama McVey!"
Within our community, you are hearing more and more of people becoming the best of friends, even though they've never met in person. The beauty of the Internet!
I consider Barbara like a sister and know that her wisdom has helped me on numerous occasions. I look forward to meeting her and Kendall "live" in January along with you too, Eric!
Family Time.....
Barbara and Kendall are actually doing what attracts so many to a home business, time with family. Like Kendall said “I get to see her! Working with her doesn’t feel like work at all.” They would make the perfect "poster picture" for a home business ad.
Mother and Daughter
What a wonderful article about Mother and Daughter!! It's fun when you can work together like that. And, Kendall has obviously learned from her Mom's example over the years - from what she did on MySpace with her music. Congratulations to Kendall on joining the coaching team and your new job position also!
How Cool to Discover
How cool to discover just by the process of connecting with people in social media and validating them as a social young adult, Kendall developed a community of friends. She discovered the reality and power of social marketing at it’s finest.
Then to watch her mom at home working in the areas of her strength and talent discovering the freedom of entrepreneurship. The icing on the cake is being able to work from home with her, in tandem. Very cool.
Then connecting the dots between what her experience in social media and her passions/talent with councelling and coaching, along with the privilege of working from home with her Mom; Kendall’s new job is a dream come true. A dream many families would love to live out.
I think this is a huge tribute to Barbara as a mom and Coaching Cognition which is her "baby", drawing her beautiful daughter on to the team.
Barbara and Kendall share some special gifts in common
Having had the chance to work with Barbara, I'm not surprised to hear that Kendall shares her mother's gifts of helping people and of marketing. Now we have to see how we can leverage Kendall's gift of music -- maybe a Coaching Cognition song as an intro on the videos? Who knows! Congratulations to both Barbara and Kendall and I'm excited to work with you both.
Wonderful Testament
The working relationship which has developed between Barbara and Kendall is as powerful a statement about the effectiveness of developing a coaching skill set as you can make.
Barbara has developed these skills as well as anyone I know, and I suspect she has been doing so for a LONG time (not calling her old, or anything...haha). The results are evident in her daughter's ability and desire to follow along a similar path.
Mike Klingler recently wrote an article about how coaching can improve your personal life as well as your business life, and I think this exemplifies perfectly what he was trying to say.
Living A Dream
I would think that there is no more satisfying development in a person's life than to work with their children. For years, I worked along side my father and learned a lot about traditional business.
I envy Barbara's position as I too have a wish to someday work closely with my daughter.
Keeping one's options open to all possibilities may just make it happen.
What a wonderful relationship to have!
How wonderful is it to have your son or daughter work along side you in your work, your goals, and what you're passionate about? It's probably what every parent hopes for.
Barbara, you've done a super job raising her and it's coming back to you, along with everything else you are putting your personal touch on. Kudos to Kendall for her choice of employer!
A Mothers Dream
Having your child decide to work with/for you must be one of the highest compliments. Very cool. Then to work together toward a common goal, something you love, that is the ultimate goal for anyone looking to work at home. Wouldn't it be great if all families could come together like this?
A Family Affair
It's great to see Barbara and Kendall work together, like Ann Sieg and her son. I guess it's a mother thing. I haven't heard of many father having their sons in their home business, except for Norman Bell of Joint Venture Group.
With Barbara's Coaching Cognition maybe we will hear of more.
Great article LeeAnn, and Kate.
Creating A Legacy
I got real enjoyment out of watching this video. I have always wanted to create a business that I could pass on to my children. The underlying concern with that is "what if my children don't want to do what I do?" When I saw the interaction between Barbara and Kendall, I saw hope that that could be something that I could shoot for as well. I know I have a bond with my son now- to see the possibility that it can continue and possibly grow into what the Silvas share is in deed a ray of sunshine. It adds more purpose to the road I have set out on. Thanks Barbara, you have helped me once again.
It is so great when we can
It is so great when we can pass on the value and joy of working from home to our kids. What better way to be able to continue to mentor them and take part in their development?
and yes. what a supreme compliment to the mom or dad whose child steps up--to be their own person in conjunction with their parent.
Truly Inspiring
Barbara and Kendall's partnership is inspiring for anyone who wishes to take back the power and work from home. By partnering within the family, Barbara and Kendall show us what can happen when we use attraction marketing and the Internet to build a business: Success! Congratulations to Barbara for raising such a lovely young woman and congrats to Kendall for stepping up and excelling in her new position. I am looking forward to working with you both more in the future.
This Gives Me Hope :)
As many of you know, not only do I work online from home, I'm a single mom and I homeschool my daughter as well. It's my dream that she'll never need or want a JOB.
Of course I'd love for her to learn to do what I do so part of our "curriculum" is internet studies. My DD has her own blog where she posts her school work and she's created several lenses over at Squidoo.
Seeing how Barbara and Kendall work so well together is inspiring to say the least and gives me great hope for my daughter and me.

Thanks LeeAnn
This is attraction marketing at it's very best. Who wouldn't be drawn to the idea of working with people like Barbara and Kendall who show us one of the real joys of being in business.
A huge blessing...
In this day and age when there is so much negativity and family strife, this story warms my heart.
I just recently hired my daughter who is 18 and I look forward to our relationship becoming even better.
Thanks for sharing this story and the hope and encouragement it brings.
Having a Daughter
At the ripe old age of 7, my daughter loves to help me in my business. She even will listen in on some of my coaching and training calls. It would be lovely if one day we could work together as a team, just like Barbara and Kendall.
Great Footsteps to Follow.
LeeAnn, I enjoyed your article. Kendall sounds like she is following in her mother's footsteps. That will help ensure her success in life.
It's so great to hear of young people getting off on the right track. We need to hear more success stories like that.
There's Still Hope...:-)
This is such a cool tribute, LeeAnn. Both to teamwork and the mother/daughter bond. I still have hopes that my youngest daughter, now 23 will follow me into business one day. This is also a testimony to the value of a coaching mindset and how one person can find and draw out the best in another. Thanks.
What a great thought...
Working with my daughter in the future. Right now she just can't see it - then again she is only 13. She thinks she cant work on computers or make websites - it will be exciting to watch her advance in technology. Many teens are smarter than adults in this area. If that does not happen it gives me warm fuzzys to know that Barbara and Kendall are working and thriving together.
Mother and Daughter
This is a great article about Mother and Daughter. This is what it's all about...having the ability to build a business where one day your children share in it.
