MLM => 'EVALUATION' Criteria (Revisited)
Hello Partners:
This is long - this issue has been discussed often - I felt compelled to address it again.
I also posted it in the Forum. I hope it will be helpful to you.
Much has been written about how best to evaluate a Home Business (especially the MLM-Network Marketing business model).
The history in our industry is very clear - far too many good people have been "hurt badly" because they failed to do enough careful research and due dilligence before they joined their MLM.
NO one can predict with any real accuracy "which" MLM companies will survive and which won't -- and NO one can 'really know' which MLM companies will help them achieve their financial goals, etc -- because none of us has a crystal ball for any of this.
But what I "can" tell you -- with absolute certainty (having been in this industry for over 23-years) -- is this...
-- IF (when) an MLM "hits the wall" ((goes bankrupt // ceases to do business // decides to eliminate its "Network Marketing" arm - like BookWise, XELR8, and iLearningGlobal did recently - leaving shock and devastation in their tracks));
-- IF (when) an MLM suffers "negative press" ((lawsuits // attacks by state Attorneys General // shut-downs by the FDA, the FTC, because of reckless "income" and/or "medical" claims by Reps, etc));
-- IF (when) an MLM evokes some "small-print" hidden clause in their Policies & Procedures (your legal contract with them - the P&Ps) -- where commission checks are frozen, or Reps are (often wrongfully, unjustfully) terminated;
... here are just two of the consequences:
==> the extra "black eye" for the industry is HUGE (reputation // credibility)
==> the financial and emotional "pain" for the Reps (and their families) is real, and lasting!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Companies - Here's a list of only about 50 companies -- just a "tiny sampling" of some of the 'carnage' that has already taken place -- companies that have been wounded and/or tarnished at one time or another (some still operating) -- companies that have come and have since vanished, or 'merged with' other companies -- companies that have sued and/or been sued -- companies that have terminated Reps (because of harsh clauses in their P&Ps), etc, etc...

----------------------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND... I would like to share with you a formula for your consideration, below...
But first, to me, the Network Marketing "business model" is one of the finest creations ever developed by the human mind - regardless of whether you build it ONline - or OFFline - or both.
It really has no equal for the average person, to be able to gain total time freedom and economic independence.
Having been involved as a Network Marketing customer, entrepreneur and coach for over 23-years, I continue to enthustically recommend it.
--------------------------------------------------------------
EVALUATION - But when it comes to "selecting" a Network Marketing company for a Home Business - I have some strong feelings on this - backed by many years of real experience + education + the "school of hard knocks".
First, I totally agree with ALL of the "usual" due-dilligence recommended (checking out the - the products & services (exclusive? / remarkable? / patented? / demand in the marketplace?) - the comp / pay plan (see separately below) - the company reputation (how long in business? / solid? / track record? / is it public or private ownership? / operating in how many countries?) - corp & upline leadership (integrity? / integrity? / integrity?) - training & support (tools, marketing systems, conference calls, webinars, other resources?) - these are all a given, obviously.
B-U-T - I believe there are some "very critical" additional factors that are totally "missed" by most - that are entirely "absent" - when doing the necessary homework and research.
Regarding START-UPS - To begin, I would urge you to be very careful about associating with a "new" MLM company (and especially one that's in pre-launch) - regardless of the (sometimes 'big name') leadership and regardless of the hype. I know that some will not want to hear this - but he track record for "new" start-ups is extremely dismal. Too many good people have lost their shirts - been hurt badly because they "jumped into" them too quickly. Until an MLM has "passed their 5th year" (at 'least') - I would advise avoiding it like the plague. Yes, I realize that all companies were "new" at one time - but YOU do not need to be one of the "experiments" that helps them determine whether they can even 'survive' that first 5-year period.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
TOP Priority - Ok, when beginning this process, what follows below should absolutely be the "minimum" DUE DILLIGENCE for all of us, whenever considering "any" MLM company. I cannot stress enough, the urgency surrounding this => adequate research ought to be JOB ONE -- just as it should be if we were buying - a Franchise - a new Home - a Brick-And-Mortar biz - a high-rise Office Tower, Apartment complex, Condo, etc.
ANMP - And I say that both as a Financial Advisor, a Business Consultant - and having served on the Board Of Directors of our professional association (the ANMP - the Association of Network Marketing Professionals -
) for almost 4-years, representing my country of Canada. The (non-profit) global ANMP serves to educate, protect and preserve the 'rights' of Home Business entrepreneurs everywhere. It also works to build a closer bond between companies and their Reps - as well to fight issues with the FDA and the FTC which it considers are unfair and/or which could be harmful to the industry.
The ANMP is the only organization of its kind in the world that represents strictly the Distributors / Reps (the 'DSA' - Direct Sellers Association - primarily represents the Companies). ALL Home Business entrepreneurs ought to become 'members' of their own professional association - the ANMP - the fee is tiny).
Those of us who have served on the ANMP Board have "seen" the horror stories that happen constantly - between Companies and Distributors - between Companies and the Regulators - including the (often ugly, and costly) court cases that result.
--------------------------------------------------------------
(#1) => POLICIES & PROCEDURES (P&Ps) - Always, always start your evaluation here - this should be your Job #1. This is the LEGAL AGREEMENT you sign when you "join" an MLM company (and sadly, it's usually signed without even "reading" it, let alone carefully "studying" it).
This contract (the P&P document) sets out your "whole relationship" with your MLM.
-- By itself, the P&P document will tell you "everything" you need to know about the integrity (or otherwise) of the company owners. It may be in the "fine print" - and you may need to "dig deep" for it - but the P&Ps will truly reveal a company's thinking - its heart - its position regarding the field. It spells out the Corp. 'attitude' behind its -Terms & Conditions - its Comp Plan - its Customer Service - it's Product Research - its Customer Satisfaction Guarantees - its whole Field Support Structure - and much more.
-- Many companies have a "ton" of RED FLAGS in their P&Ps and in their T&Cs (Terms and Conditions) -- I call them "gotchas" -- and many have P&Ps that run 20-40 -to over 100 pages long! Many P&Ps are not even 'openly displayed' on their website Home Page.
-- 'Hidden' P&Ps - To me, it is outrageous that any MLM company would NOT show a link - easy to see - right on their Home Page - to their Policies & Procedures. Some companies actually "hide" their P&Ps - and//or won't let you even "see" them until you're almost signed up - or worse still, not "until after you join" - amazing. What does that tell us ((perhaps they 'do' have something to hide))?
Q-- How many professional athletes would ever consider joining a major league without "first" studying their legal contract in detail? -- None.
Q-- How many business entrepreneurs would ever consider buying into a McDonald's franchise without "first" studying" their legal contract (or having their advisors do it for them)? --None.
Q-- And what if the League or the Big MAC executives tried to HIDE these contracts on them? Hmmm...
Likewise, if (potential) Distributors would only take the time to "find" + "print out" + "read" and "study" those P&Ps (or have a legal mind do it for them) - BEFORE ever agreeing to them, and signing on the dotted line with an MLM - they might avoid the terrible heartache that they could face later.
-- The P&Ps are drawn up by the company's bank of attorneys - to protect the "Company" - not the "Affiliate / Rep / Distributor" - and it gives the "company" all the control, power and ownership ((of ALL the assets - the products, services, offices, promotional material, websites, compensation plans - and "your" downlines)).
-- Many (perhaps most) of these P&P documents contain some very serious "gotchas" - minefields, that you need to become educated about, and keenly aware of - such as the potential for "wrongful / unjust terminations" - "lawsuits" - the right to impose negative changes in the Comp Plan - the right to "go direct" and by-pass the Rep -- all things that can wreck absolute havoc on families, both financially and emotionally.
-- ECONOMY - More and more people right now are "searching" for financial alternatives to an uncertain future. Our industry holds the "perfect answer" for many of them, including those who previously might "never" have looked in our direction ==> some very intelligent, ambitious and talented - executives - professionals - baby boomers, etc. (those who usually have a healthy 'Rolodex' too)! This reality alone, could become a "major bonanza" for us in this industry -- BUT quite frankly, if most were to "study" in advance, the Network Marketing 'P&P Agreement' (or had their advisors review it, for them) - they would NOT like what they see -- they would run.
This is a sad statement on our industry. P&Ps need to be revisited by the companies -- they need to be totally re-designed, in an effort to bring about an authentic, long term "business partnership" environment between Companies and their Reps.
Again - this is not to "put down" the many fine MLM companies out there - no. This is only to strongly encourage "due dilligence" - and to give a "heads up" about this.
-- UNILATERAL Contract - The reality is this - these Agreements are totally "one-sided" - they can be "changed" - at any time - in a heart-beat - at the pleasure of the company (for better, or worse) - usually without much [if any] input from the field . And there is nothing you or anyone else can do to stop that. They can add new clauses - or amend and//or take away existing ones. They have ALL the control, the power and ownership - not you. Even if an MLM company has "good" P&Ps right now - that can change quickly. And you have no control over that.
NOTE - Obviously, the companies do have every right to protect 'themselves' legally (and thus, their Affiliates, in most cases) - that goes without saying. However, many of these (often, boiler-plate, dinosaur) P&Ps contain language that most lay people cannot even understand.
Nevertheless, it is still important for you to at least be educated about P&Ps - to have 'some' understanding of them - an "awareness" of the realities of that LEGAL Contract that ties you to your MLM company.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Here's another very important reality...
Business 'OWNERSHIP'? - Bottom line => Affiliates / Distributors do not - "own their OWN" business - as is usually promoted in the glossy print ads. They are strictly "commissioned Sales Reps" for the company's products & services - period. Not that this is a "bad" thing - it's just the reality.
Yes, Network Marketers are IC's (Independent Contractors) - mainly for TAX purposes, so as not to be treated as Employees - but suffice to say, they are not IBOs (Independent Business OWNERS).
With Network Marketing, you "create" a form of business (a Distributorship) - yes - but you don't "own" it.
Again, not that this is a 'bad' thing - it's just factual - and again, having an "awareness" of this is healthy.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Your IDENTITY (Reputation) - Too many people simply "join an MLM" - period. They will say - "...that looks good - I think I'll join!" - NO real homework - NO serious reflection. Then they start to "wrap their whole identity" around that MLM => huge mistake => they leave themselves "wide open" for a hit.
But What About "MY" Company's P&Ps? - If you're already 'with' an MLM - and you study your own P&Ps - if you see some things in there that really trouble you - go to your top Upline Partners and discuss it with them. If that doesn't give you any real comfort, go directly to the Corp Management Team - and ask them WHY they're in there? Don't accept 'boiler plate' answers - ask if they will consider "changes" to certain parts of their P&Ps (will they at least soften them - or consider removing them altogether, etc?). Become 'proactive' - look out for not only your 'own' security - but the protection of all those people you bring into your Team under those same (legal) rules.
A Matter of 'Conscience'? - I truly believe that you (we) need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves => do we feel RIGHT in bringing 'others' into a situation that we know might end up really "hurting" them at some point? This is where 'the rubber meets the road'. This is where we test our own integrity.
At 'Arm's Length' - Product VENDORS - I recommend that you hold yourself at a bit of a "distance" from your MLM. It's Ok to "love" your MLM - just don't be "in love with" your MLM ((B-I-G difference)! Think of your MLM as being a "vendor" of (hopefully) very exceptional products and services - for yourself - your partners - your customers / clients / patients. And, if they should ever "mess up" (see all the different ways at the top) - you simply "push & play" another MLM as part of your Business Enterprise - as gut-wenching as that might be to think of, or to do.
If you build a loyal and committed LIST of your "own" - and many of them also become close friends and determined biz partners on your TEAM - this can be accomplished, IF it ever becomes necessary.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
M-O-R-E Factors to Measure:
=> The "BUSINESS RATIO"? - This is called THE BUSINESS HEALTH TEST - for any company. The company must have an excellent, verifiable (healthy) "business ratio" of Customers to Reps (ideally, a 75%-to-25% ratio, or better, respectively - otherwise, it will become unstabe, and begin to unravel at some point below).
=> The "ATTRITION" RATE? - It must have a verifiable low "drop out" rate (attrition is the "curse" of the Home Business industry). Building a full-time income with most MLM-Network Marketing businesses is like trying to constantly "fill a leaky bucket" - because unfortunately, new Distributor recruits end up going OUT the back door as fast as they come IN the front. Although many factors are very important for your success in a Home Biz, the plain truth is this => 'without' a healthy CUSTOMER-to-Rep ratio + a high RETENTION rate, success will simply NOT happen for you. But IF you can put together a solid Home Business, with a "high retention" of REPS - and especially CUSTOMERS => your chances of creating a long term "residual" income are great.
=> Is It a GOOD "FIT"? - You need to carefully determine - in advance - whether the MLM business being considered will FIT you properly, in terms of your time, your money and your marketing skills (one or more of these attributes will be required by most companies). When choosing a business, it should not be about "one size fits all". Your own DNA is "different" from everybody else's. For starters - you need to stop trying to FIX "yourself". YOU are not the problem. YOU are not broken. You don't pay a surgeon to modify your feet - to fit your shoes, do you? Of course not - you make the shoes fit your feet! It's the same with shopping for a good BUSINESS - look for one that is engineered to fit YOU, your interests and your passion! :>) As well, there are some businesses that you simply could "never" build successfully - no matter how hard you might try - because of your own particular 'personality' trait (a KEY consideration).
=> Your 'STATUS' in your MLM? - You should know that almost "everything" that measures your success with your MLM will revolve around your achieved RANK ("Pin Lenel"). Your real "worth" to the company (and often, to the field) - will be determined by 1)- your SALES VOLUME and 2)- the size of your TEAM - period. Once again - not that this is a 'bad' thing - it's just the reality with most MLMs. And many (most) companies will create Charts to openly 'publish' their top STARS each month for all to see. Personally, I believe that, despite the fact that this serves to "recognize" some - it may also act to 'diminish' other good Reps who fall short.
These two factors (sales volume and number of recruits) will tend to count far more than - "who you really are as a PERSON" (your character / background / intelligence / integrity / experience / leadership / attitude, ec). Sometimes, the [so-called] "company heroes" - those who achieve the highest ranks - will be sought after as "sponsors" - yet, they will usually be "too busy" to help / support much ((and occasionally, they might even have questionable ethics - at least this has been my personal experience, on two occasions)). At the end of the day - with most companies (but not all), it's about your "performance" -- not necessarily your "real value" as a human being. Just wanted to mention this - you may need to develop a bit of a 'thick skin' if this bothers you.
=> The "PAY PLAN"? - Up front, every MLM company's Comp Plan 'drives' the BEHAVIOR in the field. Take notice of whether there are 'income claims' being promoted by Reps, or if photos of 'commission checks' earned are being displayed (Red Flags - and the 'regulators' will attack). Get a feel for whether the Comp Plan seems to be the 'major focus' - is it the primary discussion on most of the Conference Calls? Have there been a lot of 'changes' in the Comp Plan? Hmmm.
-- Qualifications? - In order to 'participate' in the Pay Plan - find out if their 'volume production' requirements are reasonable in order to earn a check. Are their "start-up" costs high / low / none? Are their monthly maintenance costs (Autoship) reasonable? Ask them how much actual "$$" volume will be required to generate $10,00./month of 'residual' commission. Determine if your commissions are based on a "BV // PV" formula - and learn of their "group" volume requirements (reasonable?). Find out their requirements for any rewards (recognition / trips / trophys / autos / scholarships / etc).
-- Type of Plan? - Find out if their Comp Plan is - a Matrix - a Unilevel - a Binary - Stairstep Breakaway - Ausi 1 or 2-Up - a Hybrid Mix, or whatever - and what total commission rates do they pay out, broken down by tiers or levels? Ask if they offer - Startup Bonuses / Matching Bonuses / Car Bonuses / Coded Bonuses / Training Bonuses / Infinity Bonuses.
-- Penalties? - Find out if there are "front-end loads" (costly buy-in Pks). Dig deep to find if there's a lot of BREAKAGE in favor of company (often, with Binaries, but not always). Ask if the Pay Plan has COMPRESSION. Find out whether the Plan is "simple to understand" and "easy to explain" (Unilevels). Ask if they issue commission checks - daily - weekly - or monthly (by bank deposit / debit card / check)? Do they have a reputation for paying their commissions 'on time'?
-- RETAIL Sales? - Ask if they are paying commissions primarily for sales "to Distributors" (for self consumption) - or for "retail sales to their Customers".
-- WHO Gets Paid? - Does their Pay Plan mostly 'favor' - the part-timers - the full-timers (big hitters) - or both? Study their charts, graphs and powerpoint illustrations. Determine if AVERAGE (every day) people get paid - how quickly - and on what 'minimum' volumes.
-- Eight (8) Pay Plan KEYS - http://www.MLMConsultant.com/mlmlibrary ... _plans.htm
----------------------------------------------------------------
I-N-T-E-G-R-I-T-Y - This is SO important to look for. It should be the very "foundation" of the company's Leadership. It is moral soundness - it is honor - truth - character - freedom from corrupting influence, or motive. It is about practicing the Golden Rule. It is about treating people with respect - without judgement. It is the most 'fundamental source' of one's personal worth. INTEGRITY should cause the Management / Ownership to provide the highest level of CARE and ACCOUNTABILITY to those they lead. You need to look for it - in their Vision - in their Mission - in their Leadership - in their Purpose - in their Values - in their Promises => so that (hopefully) you will "know" you have the SECURITY of being able to pass your businesses on - to your children and to their children.
CAUTION - If (potential) Distributors would only take the time to "print out" and at least "read" (let alone "study") the P&Ps first - (or have a legal mind do it for them) - BEFORE agreeing to them, and signing on the dotted line - they will see the level of integrity at play (or not), and they might also avoid the terrible heartache that they could face later.
Again - this is not to "put down" the many fine MLM companies out there - no.
This is only to strongly encourage "due dilligence" - to give a "heads up" about this - to increase your "knowledge" on it.
----------------------------------------------------------------
So, how should you best POSITION Yourself?...
SELF Branding - My own recommendation is to NOT ever make your "MLM" be your BUSINESS. You're leaving yourself wide open to possible abuse + you're far too vulnerable if that becomes your "primary" source of income ((just look at what happened to the iLearning Global Reps only a few weeks ago [+ Reps with "many" other MLMs in the past!]). Instead, your MLM should be only "one part" of your overall BUSINESS ENTERPRISE (= YOU. Inc.).
In other words, you put together your own "business infrastructure" that is designed around your own SALES FUNNEL (with 'good copywriting' in your own Lead Capture Pages and your own follow-up Autoresponser messages) -- you build your own list -- you "attract" your own prospects / leads to you and your Team, via the Online Attraction Marketing model -- you offer them high VALUE (without a hidden agenda) through your Blog contributions + the Tools & Resources ("picks & shovels") you offer + your Social Media Networking / Twitter & Facebook accounts + your Articles and your Videos, etc -- you become a (transparent) Servant LEADER, where others seek YOU out.
DIVERSIFICATION - Further, you should 'position' yourself so that you have "multiple" income streams - both for your personal protection and for higher profitability. Never put "all your eggs in one basket" (despite those who argue with this). I believe in adding "Affiliate" deals and Funded Proposals only - not multiple "MLMs". Above all, your (carefully chosen) 'primary' MLM becomes the "back end" PRIZE of your whole Marketing Funnel.
Your 'PRODUCT' - The "only" product you should ever lead with is => Y-O-U (to build relationships "first" with your potential Customers and Biz Partners.
This is one of the reasons that some of the 'pioneers' of Internet Attraction Marketing (like Joe Schroder, Mike Dillard, Diane Hochman and Ann Sieg) all put SO much weight on the critical need for you to build your OWN lists - and to brand YOURSELF first - and not the companies, or their products & services, etc. It reduces the risk greatly - it makes you far less vulnerable.
The "PRICE"? - Make no mistake - there IS a large "learning curve" involved and there's a substantial "time committment" required before all of these parts "come together" - IF you do it all by yourself (the ideal way -- "give" them a fish, or "teach them how to fish"?). On the other hand, much of this challenge can be avoided by either OUTSOURCING it - and/or by tapping into a ready-made (pre-built) Marketing SYSTEM. There are pros and cons to each.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Personal Thoughts - The MLM-Network Marketing business model is perhaps the last bastion left, in the Free Enterprise System, where someone - without a high education - without a famous bloodline - without a large capital investment - can truly become FINANCIALLY FREE. And where else can one find - wrapped up in ONE business model - the opportunity for - leverage - residual income - self development - friendships - tax incentives - 'time' freedom - recognition - travel - leadership growth - a sense of belonging - more fun - the chance for a better life - to name only a few?
The FUTURE - Despite the present sluggish economy - our industry is experiencing real 'growth'.
One of the best ways for YOU to 'participate' in this journey -- for the long haul -- is to do your level best when "choosing" the MLM that will be a part of your Business Empire + your future success and happiness.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to examine this at a 'deeper' level...
More Due Dilligence => http://www.MLM-Wise.com
More Due Dilligence => http://www.MLM-Wiser.com
-----------------------------------------------------------------
finally, the Y-O-U factor...
Regardless of "how good" your research and due dilligence may be -- regardless of "how good" (or otherwise) the MLM is, that you choose for your own Business Enterprise -- regardless of "how good" your marketing, communication and leadership skills become...
BOTTOM LINE - Here is where the 'rubber really meets the road' => it sets the entire stage for your 'ultimate victory' in the pursuit of your Goals and your DREAMS.
-- The Hard TRUTH? - Y-O-U are by far the (#1) reason for success (or failure) in your own future => Y-O-U.
-- It is WITHIN - Always remember that success comes from "inside" of you -- not from the "outside".
As important as selecting a good MLM is (and it is) -- as critical as good tools / systems / coaching / support are (and they are) -- the REAL answer lies WITHIN each of us.
-- Are you a PEOPLE Person? - MLM is a "people" business -- a "relationship" building business -- it requires "talking with / listening to / helping / guiding" people - not "hiding behind a computer" or trying to "automate" everything in robotic fashion.
-- Are you Coachable? - There must also be a very strong partnership between Coach and Student, to bring about the 'changes' necessary for a truly SUCCESSFUL future. To achieve the highest results, you need to be willing to be coached - and to allow your progress to be monitored, on a regular basis. Two (2) aspects to the YOU Factor:
(1)-- YOU (with the Team's help) are responsible for your 'own' success (and it starts with CHANGE and SELF GROWTH);
(2)-- YOU (with the Team's help) are the (#1) 'reason' people will join you. They do not join Companies / Products / Comp Plans -- they join Y-O-U -- and the "values" and "vision" YOU bring to the table.
No matter how great a NWM Company is -- no matter how great a NWM Pay Plan is -- no matter how great the MLM products are -- or the marketing -- or support / training -- NONE of it matters at all -- unless YOU are effectively working on Y-O-U => and on a daily basis.
-- Your W-H-Y - You will absolutely need a very powerful REASON for building your Home Biz -- because IT will help 'pull you through' the obstacles and challenges you'll face ahead in achieving success - in living life. Ideally, it should be a GIGANTIC "Why" - one that will take your breath away - one that will DRIVE you on - one that creates a crystal clear "mental picture" of what you WANT in this life - who you wish to BEcome
-- Personal Growth - This is why Personal Development Trainers like Jim Rohn say -- "INCOME Development will seldom ever exceed PERSONAL Development."
NEVER forget what ultimately 'determines' your Success => Y-O-U -- your own Big DREAM -- your own Burning DESIRE -- your own Strong BELIEF -- your own Quick ACTION -- your own Steady PERSEVERANCE -- your own SUCCESS MINDSET + PROSPERITY CONSCIOUSNESS.
NEVER, NEVER Forget -- YOU are "special" - the Seeds of Greatness are within you (not "outside" of you).
