New Years Planning Thoughts

Read More: Discipline  |  Leadership  |  Personal Development

I just wanted to close out this year with a quick note to you with some food for thought over the couple of weeks.  Most of us wait until this down time of the year to think about next year and what we will want to accomplish.  I want to leave you with a thought as you go into this natural time of planning.  What is most important to you in this life and what would you accomplish over the next year if you were to only focus on things that would allow you accomplish these specific goals.  Everyone has different goals, dreams and desires and we need each and every one of us and our uniqueness that the good Lord has provided to each of us.

Now with this in mind bear with me as we work through the rest of this email.  Let’s start with the end in mind as we go through this next part.  Ask yourself a question and ponder it during the next two weeks as you go through this planning process.  The question is very simple too.  If you were able to witness your funeral (wait now for a minute don’t stop reading here), what would everyone be saying about you?  I think that most of us would agree that we would to hear things like we were loved and generous, made a difference in people’s lives, great Dad, Mom, Grand Parent etc.  Notice as you make this list where the economics of your life fall into the priorities here.

I know when I was first asked to do this exercise by my Business and Life coach, and I am sure that I had a lot of the same thoughts that are running through your mind right now.  With that being said, let me share with you how my list shook out.  My number one priority was my relationship with God, then my Wife and Family, My own health (Mental and Physical), then toward the bottom of the list came business and money.  Now don’t get me wrong I am not saying that we don’t need our professions, but I am saying that as for life long goals it doesn’t receive the ultimate priority!  In order for us to fully enjoy the other aspects of our lives and to have the time to accomplish the goals that are most important, we must become very, very efficient with our time.  I want to end with this thought on the subject.  Balance is the key, and to know what we want to accomplish in the end.  Then each and everyday think about your day as it happens and ask yourself if this is something that is moving you closer towards your goals.

I can tell that when you start using this filter for all of your decisions, your priorities will be in focus.  With focused concentration and direction, as we move forward in life, we become amazed at what we can accomplish each and every day.  Light from the Sun is very bright and powerful and we can be exposed to it with the right protection without being burnt.  But remember as we have all done with a magnifying glass what happens when we focus that light.  We can start a fire with that concentrated energy.  In fact with a lot less effort and even from a low wattage bulb can we produce that type of energy and we don’t even need the power from the sun to accomplish this.

I would like to see each and every one that is receiving this message from this year to add this to there thought process in the coming year.  I think you too, will be amazed at the impact and power that it may have in your life.

If you don’t have what you want in your life today or the balance or the money, time, friends and the list goes on and on.  Take inventory of your stock, determine what is most important and find a mentor that you can talk to about these things and be held accountable to them (big key is someone else holding you accountable to what you say you want to do).  Key point here is making your accountability partner for this someone other than your wife or husband.  Why you may ask, the answer is simple on this one.  Our loved ones should be part of our sounding board, but they have an automatic defense mechanism because we are loved by them and when we forget to tell them something worked out and we didn’t share that with them.  The next time they see the person that you had the issue with, sorry for them.  I think you get the point here!

I want to end this email with a prayer for each and every one of you in my life and thank you for being a part of this journey through life with me.  I prayer is for you and your family to blessed this Christmas Season and to have a prosperous new year with a new directed and focused mindset.  You see when we are focused on the outcome; the chaff that comes up in life is just that.  It doesn’t get our full attention and doesn’t sway us off course any more.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and let’s look forward to 2009 together making this world a better place for us all to live, most importantly that we leave it better than it was given to us.  That we should do for our children and for this Father of four, they are all the reason I need!
