How Much do You Want it - Or How Hungry Are You??
Ryan Walter played more than 1,000 games over 15 seasons in the NHL during
his hockey career. He was captain of the Washington Capitals. He played
nine seasons with the Montreal Canadiens and won a Stanley Cup during his
tenure. He finished his career in his hometown of Vancouver as assistant captain of the
Vancouver Canucks.
Born in Burnaby, B.C., Ryan is now a much sought-after motivational speaker and
leadership coach. Recently, he spoke at my church and one of the key questions that
he asked the members of the congregation was, “Are you hungry?”
According to Ryan, the difference between first place and second place is not about
talent and it’s not about coaching, it’s about being hungry enough to go out and do
what it takes to get the job done, whether it’s scoring goals, scoring new accounts or
scoring a promotion.
The opposite of hungry isn’t “not hungry;” it’s ambivalence, which really means,
“I don’t care.” Take that attitude on a hockey team and it won’t be long before you find
yourself out of a job. Take that attitude in life and chances are you won’t get very far
either. Why? Because in the same way that hockey championships are won by the
teams that are generally the most hungry, so too is the business world dominated by those companies that are willing to deliver above and beyond what their competition does. And the people who are most successful in life? They’re the ones who want it so bad that they can actually taste it. How hungry are you to achieve your dreams; your goals in life; the vision you have for your company, your career, your family, your community? Stay hungry and see what happens!
