Revisit The Topic of Hype & Integrity
Use if Hype Is Unethical
Even If You Don't Know It's Hype
Hype is commonly used to entice people to join a Network Marketing business, it's just the nature of the business, and the presentation of the plan is where hype usually surfaces.
When people make outrageous claims that a product will do something but they have nothing to back it up or they make claims of huge income that can be made if you work hard, then you should suspect it to be hype and a lie; it's a lie because it is not completely the truth.
It may be possible to make the sort of money they talk about, but successful people don't have to brag about their wealth or flaunt it in order to be believable. If they have to show off supposed wealth, then it's likely that they don't really make that kind of money they say or else they don't have a handle on the truly important things in life.
I am involved with Amway/Quixtar; I have been since 1977. I've been around the most successful people in the Network Marketing business and so I know that some people really do make huge income. I also know that the average distributor does not. Although I did make a decent income, it was never close to what many dishonest distributors claimed.
Because I've been in the Network Marketing business for so long, and because I've seen success and failure myself, I can spot hype in an instant. I know what is and isn't true because I've lived it myself.
I know that true wealth does not have to be talked about unless someone is trying to impress another; in that case, it's hype whether it's true for that person or not because not everyone will make that sort of income. You shouldn't try to gage your success anyway by how successful someone else is. You are not that person and your situations are different as well.
WHAT IS REAL WEALTH
Let me tell you what I know about wealth. I know that if you lay up your treasures on earth that can be washed away in a storm, you may feel empty and alone when it's gone.
With proper training and the focus being on creating a life with meaning and purpose, our lives are much richer and fuller when we have the memories and experiences of others we've worked with as we reach for our goals. This is how we will feel content with our successes in life.
With the proper training like I've had, you learn to build your business based on personal character as you increase your income. Your life will be much more fulfilling when you reach the level of success that you worked so hard to achieve.
WHY DOES NETWORK MARKETING USE HYPE
The question is why do Network Marketing businesses use hype? To answer, let us first talk about what hype is and what it is not.
- Hype does not belong in a healthy ibusiness decision, especially in Network Marketing or any business venture.
- Hype is not real, it is a facade, and it is a lie because it's not quite the truth.
- Hype is used to cover up a sinking ship or holes in the plan.
- Hype is triggered by emotions. Impulse buyers make unwise decisions when emotions and passions are exploited. Network Marketing opportunists know this technique and use it often to their advantage. That's how we get "Buyers Remorse" and people die on the vine before they ever get started.
- Hype is manifested in people who try to manipulate others. They use a quick-silver tongue to influence people into accepting another way of thinking, or to get them to do what the manipulator wants them to do.
People use hype to increase their income and their number of new recruits. If hype didn't work so well then people wouldn't use it. But it does work, and it works very well. Manipulators know that people want what they pitch and so the game plan is to get them to bite any way they can. Hype is the easiest way to make the sale and so they use it.
It takes a wise opportunity seeker to break the effectiveness of this tool and refuse to use it themselves. To do that, however, they must only report income potential that the company they represent says is true, and use the scenario that is diagramed in approved company presentations. In this way your presentation will be honest and without embellishments.
WHAT IS THE ALTERNATIVE TO HYPE
Honesty and integrity should be the only way to do business. In other words, if you do not know for a fact that the claims you make are true or you think that they might be inflated, then you don't use the information. Your word should mean something, and it can't if what you say turns out to be a lie.
You need to accept responsibility for the words you use when you promote an opportunity. You owe it to the people you involve with you in the business to be honest in what you represent to them. If it's not true, then you CANNOT promote it the way, even if your upline suggests it.
I admit that I too got caught up in hype when promoting a business opportunity, but I didn't know any better at the time. I highly relied on my upline to guide me, and that is the mistake many of us make when we are new in a business. When we swallow the hype ourselves, then we also promote it.
Now it is thirty years down the road and I am NOT easily influenced by hype anymore. In fact, I worked for an insurance agent who offered me bonuses and incentives to sell specific products. He was shocked when I told him that I do not sell a product because of a promotional for bonuses, but that I sell a product because I believe it is what the client needs or I don't sell it. Later, I told the agent not to pay me any bonuses because he was actually competeting with me on sales.
The point I hope you appreciate is that you sell a product or a marketing plan because you see the value in it for the person you talk to about it and not because of the money you can make. This means changing the way you think from the goal being based on money to the goal of providing value. I realize this is a novel concept these days, but one that must be understood and put into practice in order to be in integrity. That my friend is the way I want to do business. I hope you do too.
