What Does Persistence Really Mean?

Read More: Discipline

I watched a movie today, an older movie and one that I have watched before. The name of the movie was "Men of Honor." It is about the struggles of the first black navy diver. It starred Cuba Gooding Jr who had to triumph over the racism that was part of the military. No matter what he had to go through, he persisted. He had to overcome freezing temperatures, a racist commander, the loss of a leg, intense pain. He became the first amputee to return to full active duty in the navy. I watched this movie with different eyes today.

When I think of persistence, I think of babies trying to walk. They fail hundreds of times yet they never give up. Eventually they learn to take a few wobbly steps and fall down again. They get back up and one day they are running around the yard.

The same thing applies to my business. I failed a ton of times but I never gave up. At times I wanted to, telling myself "this is too hard, I'm not cut out for this kind of thing, I have great products, a great comp plan, great system, the best training yet nobody wants to join my company." Persistence means to triumph over every obstacle. Persistence means to never give up. There will be setbacks in my business but Cuba Gooding had setbacks, the baby trying to walk had setbacks. There is only one way to fail in Network Marketing and that is to quit.

Persistence means taking little baby steps, never giving up, finding ways to overcome obstacles. Where would we be if the Wright Brothers had given up? If Ben Franklin decided to not fly a kite? Think about Colonel Sanders, he received over 1000 no's before someone was willing to take a chance on him. Look where Kentucky Fried Chicken is today. So if you ever think about quitting, go find the nearest baby and watch them.

Very Encouraging

I think part of the problem is that this very business encourages us to dream. When we don't see immediate results, too many will give up and claim it is too hard.

Nice Article and thanks for the inspiration!

You have definately studied mindset consciousness!

Agreed, and Colonel Sanders was almost 70 before he succeeded.

David Demangos — Wed, 09/16/2009 - 7:13am

So true!

Many people quit half way up the mountain. Persistence pays off so long as you learn from what went wrong and you work on making it that much better next time.

keep it up !

Really when we are facing we tried to give up ! when you gave up it means you gave up your future! no matter how hard we have to stick to it! try hard and achieve !

Great article Donnie

"failure", like fear is truly non-existent.
It is an imagined state to blame others and circumstances
for our slight detours on the Voyage to Abundance.
The bumps are just Opportunities for a smoother Journey Tomorrow.

Be persistent to reach your dreams!

Hi Donnie

The power of our dreams is incredible! make your dreams essentials in your life, make the fact to not achieve your dreams so paintful that you will feel that you absolutely MUST achieve them.
As a consequence, you will find ressources in your mind, in your body for persistence, commitment, drive and focus. Develop a strong mindset (by incantation, by questionning your inconscious mind) and you will find your ressources to follow through, to persist because you absolutely MUST achieve your dream.
Like that you will support failures on the way, bad day. That is part of the process for success. You need to accept the game, and persist.
It is one of the key for success.
And as you said Donnie, persistence is how you are able to try again again until you find the succeesful strategy.

Thank you for your discussion Donnie

Great day to everyone

Knowing what you have!

Knowing what you have is what really counts. Others will see in you the passion and knowledge you have with your business and they will follow you. Our nation's history is rich with people who persistently persued their dreams. Consistency + persistance = success!

Persistence

Thanks Donnie for the reminder of why I can't give up on my dreams. When I think of persistence I think of my youngest son Tyler. Tyler is one of the most positive people I know. He always expects that he will achieve his goals, get what he wants and he is always in a good mood. When he was about 8 yrs. old he asked me every day for a year if he could get a Play Station when it first came out. Every day I said no because I did not have the money. He never stopped asking. One year later he had his Play Station. I will never forget this. Persistence means "I will do today what others won't, so I can do tomorrow what others can't."

Thanks Donnie. To our success!

Awesome Empowering Post !

Great job on the mindset of commitment to succeed no matter what.

There are so many others you could have mentioned , even Sam Walton , who started Wal-Mart in his 50's.

Ray Kroc & his development of the McDonalds Empire etc.

I agree with you that this is an important subject so much so that...

Recently I wrote an article on this same subject posted at my blog entitled : "The Secret To Avoiding Network Marketing Failure"

Here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/qhlgkb

Donnie.

Thanks for the inspiration. It never hurts to get a lift of spirit!

I believe Lance Armstrong is responsible for this quote "pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever". When you get at it and get it done, the pain is past and you become stronger for your efforts.

Keep it up!

Repetition

It looks like you started something Donny. One key element though, aside from persistence that you need to stay motivated is that you also need to persist in the action of repeating an action that is slowly moving you forwards. It is difficult to persist in anything without feeling like you are accomplishing something with all of the effort that you are putting in. By the way, I like your quote Wayne. Pain is temporary, but quitting DOES last forever.

Nice!

I've used the baby walking analogy may times. How true it is...I believe the key to life is never lose the determination of a child. Something happens as we age that allows us to hold ourselves back...Live like a child today!

Pass The Persistence Test

"Nothing can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

Your Going to Fail

that's just part of the process, the idea is to fail fast and learn from your mistakes so you can build that skill to the point of benefiting you.

Motivation to stay commited

Hi Donnie, I have recently become a network marketer with the prospect of becoming a work from home entrepreneur. I have been through a learning curve as steep as Kilimanjaro, and by being able to write and publish my first article as well as searching for it on the net AND finding it was a highlight to my week.
That was motivation to do more.
I managed to create my own simple website. Another achievment, "wow I can really do this".
I recorded and edited my own video (although it took me two days)and published it on Utube, again I was motivated to do more.

So, although I also as a new networker feel like you explained , if I focus on the things that have gone right I don't want to give up , I want to keep trying new things and getting that satisfaction of acomplishment.

A thought though on the Betternetworker comunity being the friendly, sharing and caring place it is , why can we not consider perhaps starting a "SHOP" where all the variety of networkers products can be displayed for other networkers who may be looking, can purchase. Thus enabling our community to earn money and at the same time keeping the funds within the "family" .

I enjoyed your encouragment.

Cuba Rocks!

Thanks Donnie,

You said "There is only one way to fail in Network Marketing and that is to quit." I also like to add: "And the only way to quit miserably... is to quit having learned nothing!"

It's not that we've actually learned nothing, it's that our thinking about our so-called "Failure" is so darn fogged over by the emotions we connect with failure.

It's easier said than done... But if we can only be more present, know that failure is not an option as long as we seek the knowledge within it... Then apply that new knowledge as we move forward.

I think people will start to apply a much more emotionally neutral look at their past, realizing that there's nothing they can possibly do to change it anyway... pick themselves up and hit the road running after all they desire!

Thanks again,
Ron
P.S. Cuba Rocks in that movie!

Rock climbing

Thank you for this bit of motivation, I am rock climbing everyday, way into the night, I have many times almost reached that mountain, but with a little motivation like yours it makes me want to climb and defeat that mountain too!

We can do it, don't give up!
