How To Set And Reach Your Goals

What would you like to enhance in your life? More confidence. More friends. More happiness. Well it's possible to have all three by setting and reaching goals.

You can gain more confidence when you set small goals and reach them. This will give you the confidence to take on bigger goals. You will also feel more confident when you face daily challenges. People will take note of your confidence and respect you for it. You may even feel less pressure from demanding individuals as a result. These people may come to admire you.

You can gain more friends when you're goal-oriented because people enjoy being around individuals who know what they want and who are willing to work for it. When people are drawn to you because of your goals, they will invariably become members of the support team you need to reach these goals.

You can gain more happiness when you're active. There is no fun being bored or waiting for your life to happen. It's easy to get discouraged if you don't have anything to focus on or look forward to. Setting goals helps you to feel good about yourself. When you set and reach goals, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Runners in a race don't run without a goal in mind. The bigger your goal, the greater your feeling of accomplishment once you reach it! However, don't be too hard on yourself if you are not accomplishing your goal "perfectly" or in the time frame you had set for yourself. Giving in to those negative feelings won't help. You need to keep on trying. Speaking to people who have already reached the goals you have set is powerful. They can inspire you and offer you practical suggestions. Share your goals with your family so that they can also be a part of your support team.

So how do you go about reaching your goals?

First you need to identify what your goals are. Don't be fearful of setting large goals. If other people have reached them before, then so can you! These are your identifying steps:

  1. Brainstorm potential goals. Have fun with this step. Don't be overly analytical. Just write down as many ideas as you can. Think of at least ten or twenty possibilities.
  2. Evaluate your ideas. Which are the most exciting and the most challenging? Which of these goals would you be most proud of achieving? The best goals are ultimately the ones that mean the most to you.
  3. Prioritise. Choose some short-term goals that you could reach within a few days. Then choose long-term goals reachable within many weeks or months. Assess which goals you would like to achieve first.

Your next step is to plan your goals. Goals are all very good and well but you need a plan to reach them otherwise they will always be goals and never achievements. Goals can be compared to blueprints. It takes genuine effort and work to turn them into reality! Follow these guidelines by making an entry in your diary or notebook:

  1. List your goal.
  2. Set your deadline.
  3. Plan the necessary steps involved.
  4. Anticipate obstacles and think of how you will overcome these.
  5. Make a commitment. Make a promise to yourself that you will do your utmost to attain this goal. Then sign and date it.

Your final step is to take action. Goals can easily be placed on hold, so you have to stay focused and keep working toward them.

  1. Start immediately. Ask yourself, "What can I do today to start working toward my goal?". You may not have all the details worked out, but you shouldn't let this stop you from getting started. A farmer doesn't wait for the wind and weather to be just right otherwise he'll never end up planting anything. Find something you can do today, even it's a small goal and do it!
  2. Review your goals daily. Remind yourself why each one is important to you. Track your progress by ticking off and dating each step you complete.
  3. Exercise flexibility. Despite how good your plans are, they might need adjusting as you go along. That's fine. Don't be worried about rigidly sticking to a plan. Keep making consistent progress towards the final goal.
  4. Exercise your imagination. "Fast forward" and imagine yourself achieving your goal. Feel the sense of accomplishment. Then "rewind" through each step and visualise them. Then press "play". See yourself completing each step and imagine how elated you will feel in attaining your goal. Now don't delay...just do it!

One of your goals may be to quit your day job and work from home.
