Attraction Marketing - How People Really Screw It Up

I mentioned in my last post  that I wanted to share with you my thoughts on how some people really manage to screw up such a simple concept as using attraction marketing to lead with value. I was going to share this story in that post, but I could tell by how quickly I was typing that it was going to run a bit long, so I decided to break it up into another post. Plus, even though this was a really small incident, it really got my goat and when that happens I know it's going to be good, so I decided it needed it's own post. So here goes....

Attraction Marketing or Spam?

I recently set up a Facebook group for my team in my primary company. I was thrilled when people from the team started to join right away. I was super-excited because I'm always working to get more of our team online and I figure this is a nice non-intimidating way to do it. So here I was working away to get people to start interacting with each other. I put up a post asking everyone to write a short bio and maybe add a picture. I did my own, then sat back and waited to see what happened next.

Would you believe it? The very first post was a guy spamming the group with his business opportunity. And here's the real kicker, it wasn't even our company. It was something completely different. I was totally floored. Of course I sent him a very nice message asking him to please not do it again, but inside I was seething. He came back with a note saying that he wasn't promoting his MLM, he was trying to help people save money (ironically, by promoting his MLM). The funny thing was, I think he really believes his story that he is trying to help people. However, if I asked him what value he was providing, he couldn't tell me. He seems to think that spamming a product is somehow "helping" people. But how can that be if he hasn't even bothered to find out what help people are looking for? It doesn't make sense to me at all.

Attraction Marketing and Leading with value

I sat around and stewed about this for quite a while. Not the best use of my time, I'll admit, but this really got under my skin. After a while I realized that's exactly what most people who are struggling to build a network marketing business do. It's why he's struggling, right?

And then I understood. The problem is that no one has helped him understand that spamming his opportunity is a terribly ineffective way to build a business but a great way to loose all your friends. No one has ever taught him about leading with value using attraction marketing. If he sticks around our group long enough, maybe something will rub off on him. I guess you never know.

Now you may be asking what exactly does it mean to lead with value and what does attraction marketing have to do with trying to get people to join your business. Well think of it like this, if you were approached by someone on the street and the first thing they said to you was " Hey want to buy this $20,000 car I am selling?" Well if you are anything like most people you would be a bit bewildered because you do not know this person and you did not want to buy a car anyway.

Now if this same person approached you on the street and just started talking to you and asking you questions about yourself and your situation this would be different. They may discover that you are in the market for a product they have that will solve a problem for you. You will then have made a connection with them and you will be more likely to take a look at their offer.

These two scenarios are the difference between spamming your business opportunity to strangers and using attraction marketing by leading with value.
