Push Up Bras and a Little Leg?
I'll bet you're wondering... what the heck is he talking about now?
Has he lost his mind?
Keep reading... I promise it will be worth it.
The other night, I was on an Attraction Marketing webinar with Diane Hochman and Cathie Heath... perhaps you were there.... and the conversation
got VERY interesting.
We were talking about the need to STAND OUT from the crowd
by highlighting your skills and accomplishments.
Diane appropriately called it....
"Showing a little leg!"
And as often happens on one of these webinars, the talk got
a little risque... but it was all good, because there was a
HUGE marketing message to be learned in the process.
It's one of the core marketing lessons that you must learn if
you're going to succeed in business.
Let me explain....
For those of us who are a little older and out of the dating
game for a while, I want you to think back.
For you gals, how did you attract the opposite sex?
You could either sit back and wait to be "discovered" or you
could advance the process by putting the spotlight on
yourself a bit....
... by showing a little leg.
Sorry guys, but the girls have the advantage here because they
understand this concept VERY well.
Now, before you write me hate mail about being sexist, relax
and see where I'm going with this.
Diane related that back in the day, girls used to wear push up bras
and show a little leg on dates to get the attention of the boys.
I have no idea if they still do but probably there is some variation
of this still in play.
It was a bit of a game... get the attention of the boys....
but in a subtle way.
The idea what to grab their attention away from others...
to force them to look at you and not some other girl.
We're not talking about anything provocative here,
just an attention grabber.
Showing a little leg....
And this just isn't something the girls did.
Many a guy (including me) would show off on the ball field
when they knew a girl was watching on the sidelines, maybe
even taking off his shirt to show off his muscles.
Or how many of you guys would try to act tough in front
of a special girl, portraying yourself as the alpha male in
the group?
And believe me... more often than not we made complete fools
of ourselves, but I digress.
The point is this... we were trying to separate ourselves from the
crowd by showing off and putting our best foot forward.
Okay, so how does this relate to marketing?
It's CROWDED out there on the internet, and you need to start
thinking of your prospect as a potential date. You need to
court him/her and "show a little leg".
You need to stand out from the crowd.
Maybe you know a lot of skills or you've gotten some cool
results in your marketing.
Or maybe you've just started and just got your first lead.
If you think that the leads and sales will follow just because
of this, you're sorely mistaken.
You've got to show a little leg.
You can do this in different ways.
One way is to shout out your marketing accomplishments from
every rooftop, saying "LOOK AT ME!".
The trouble is most won't look because it seems fake
or like you're full of yourself.
But you can leave clues that are much more effective....
you can show enough leg to create curiosity.
Here's one example....
Let's say you take a course on Video Marketing and from
what you learned, you shoot a killer video that gets you over
50 new leads for your business.
You could go online and shout this out in a status update on
Facebook, or.....
You could shoot an email to the product creator, tell him
about your success and let HIM tell the world how great you
are (since you were using his product!).
Here's another example...
Make an arrangement with a marketing buddy to cross-
promote each other, mentioning each other's accomplishments
in passing on Facebook or other social media platform.
Or maybe even in a mailing to your lists (see how important
that list is!).
It's not as sensational as the first example but it still works
because it acts like social proof.
What a huge difference when someone else points out
your accomplishments, right?
Here's the key... show enough to get people curious, but don't
give it all away.
Show a LITTLE leg.... mention your accomplishments or skills
in passing, like it happens all the time.
Don't show too much or you'll be viewed as a conceited jerk
who just needs attention.
It can be a fine line, but here's one sure way to never get
in trouble:
Always let someone else tell the world about you.
When you yell about you... it looks needy.
When someone else yells about you... it looks cool.
The important thing is SHOW A LITTLE LEG and get noticed out there!
