A conversation with an Internet Marketer – Is there Room for Procrastinators?
I’m not going to mention this guy’s name I’ll just give him an alias. I was blown away by his story, however I don’t think it’s that unusual for this to happen a lot in the internet marketing industry, or is it?
Last night I was contacted by someone (I’ll call him Sam) that wanted some direction with the Article Marketing. I don’t normally have the time to spend two hours on the phone sorting out problems for other people, however this guy (Sam) was different and I was a little intrigued by the fact that he had spent the last 2 years online. I guess I was keen to know where he was at. After we sorted his article marketing problem out, I started asking him a few questions. How long had he been online, what product he was marketing, had he had any Internet Marketing training? Who was his mentor etc.
Sam sounded like he had a lot of experience and was doing very well online. He had left his offline job and decided he would never work for anyone ever again. He wanted to be the ruler of his own destiny he didn’t want to keep making someone else rich. I totally get that part!
However, this is the part I didn’t get. I nearly fell off my chair in shock when Sam explained that it had been 2 years since he started his online business, but he had not made one cent online. In two years? Hello!!! So, what has Sam been doing online for the last 2 years? You guessed it! He has been perfecting his business, giving it that shining appeal so that when he does start building his list, everything will be in place for his team to duplicate exactly what he has done. Nothing!
Are you asleep yet?
Do you get where this is leading?
Sam has been online for 2 years, he has no list and he has no money coming in at all. To top it off, while I was speaking to him I decided to Google his name and surprise, surprise, he was nowhere to be found. I thought he had at least been article marketing for the build up of his massive launch of his perfected website. Sam didn’t have a mentor, in fact I was the first person he had spoken to that was an internet marketer. It took him two years to chat to someone! He wanted to know if he was heading in the right direction! He even asked me to take a look at his site.... and yes you guessed it his company’s cookie cutter site with his name at the top. He does have a word press blog and this is where he is perfecting his training and everything else that goes with his business. He’s also set up a forum for his team, when he gets one! I have to give him credit in a way, because he has done the ground work, but when do you stop? It’s time to start making money Sam!
He then wanted to know if I was making any money. Answer.... “of course and it didn’t take me 2 years to do it.” I invited him to join Betternetworker, if nothing else to open his eyes and be a part of this community. Who knows if he will join us or not or for that matter ever get his shinny new business off the ground?
After hanging up the phone I realised how blessed I was to be part of an Internet Marketing programme that set me on the right track, gave me the best entrepreneurs in the business to partner with and guide me through my Online Success.
Hey don’t get me wrong I’m not knocking Sam, I think he has a lot of patience and is certainly persistent in his online endeavours, but when do you stop perfecting and start earning. He needs to draw the line!
Do you think Sam is a procrastinator or just suffering from a huge bout of FEAR he needs to overcome?
Perhaps you were just like Sam when you first started out. I look forward to your comments.

Getting Ready to Get Ready!
This is so common with a lot of people. In fact I had a simlar call one day, i am not sure it was 2 years... but this guy was also doing all this work for an imaginary team.
Here's an important lesson.
Start marketing and then look after your team. It seems the more natural order.
Procrastination is definetely an achilles heal for alot of marketers.
