Dont Be An MLM Zombie - The Worst MLM Marketing Techniques Ever (True Story)

Until now, I have only shared these experiences with some of my closest friends and business partners, but today I am putting it all out there with the hopes that it resonates with others. At the very least, you will have a good laugh at my expense. I hope that by sharing a few of my past horrible experiences in my first network marketing company, I can prevent others from going down that path. A path that leads to a very dark forest, where you will alienate, or even loose friends, and send business prospects running from you as if you were a real life zombie from Day Of The Dead.
My first exposure to the network marketing/MLM industry was when I was 19 years old (we will not mention company names). I was actually taught, and in some cases, I even paid to learn these marketing strategies. The funny thing (well maybe not so funny) is that I still see people doing some of these exact activities. I don't know if they are being taught these techniques like I was, or if they just came up with them on their own. One thing's for sure, they will be learning a hard lesson.
I have named each of these techniques accordingly. Some of you might even recognize them ...and yes I admit it, I once actually did this stuff.
So, here we go...
1. Mr. BizOp Party Crasher
This is the guy who shows up to every gathering, party, or event whether invited or not, with a pocket full of business cards and a fist full of CDs. Then proceeds to hand them out to EVERYONE. This individual may even be so bold as to wear his company logo, t-shirt, or level pin, thinking that people will ask him about it.
2. Mr. Bookstore Prospecting Heavy Breather
This is the guy who hangs out at the local bookstore in the business/self help isle waiting to pounce on anyone who reaches toward a Robert Kiyosaki (or other business related) book. We call him the heavy breather because when someone did this to me no too long ago, I could hear his nervous breathing behind me as he watched my every move. I could almost feel him trying to gather the courage to start a conversation.
3. Mr. Awkward Conversation Mall Lurker
This guy will hang out at the mall all day thinking he is working on his business. After several hours of trying to get a conversation going with anyone who will give him the time of day, he may even resort to desperate techniques like dropping phony $100 dollar bills with a sticker on the back with his phone number and company website. Then watch as people pick them up, realize they are not real and promptly toss them in the trash.
4. Mr. Open Car Window Grenade Tosser
Oh, ya! This guy is a real annoyance. He is the one who flings his business card or CD/Cassette into every parked car window with a widow slot big enough. Then, after spending the day tossing grenades, he rushes home and sits by the phone waiting for interested prospects to call. I did not realize how annoying this actually was until it was done to me.
5. Mr. Front Porch Bomber
This guy drives around nice neighborhoods and leaves brochures on porches thinking that the owner will surely be interested enough to check out his website and sign up in his business. I even had a member of my up-line drive me around for an entire day to do this. Unbelievable!
6. Mr. Chat Room Loiterer
This guy pays $95 to attend a 4-hour class to teach him how to log into AOL chat-rooms and butt himself into every conversation to jam in something about his product or business. As you can imagine, this does not go over well.
7. Mr. Windshield Litterer
We have all been victim of this guy. He finds large parking lots with no security and proceeds to pin his business card or other material under the the driver's side windshield wiper. He actually thinks that people will take it out, read it, and be very interested to buy from him or join his business.
8. Mr. Piece Of Crap Car With A Millionaire Bumper Sticker Driver - (this one I never did, but I still see it all the time, so I thought I better include it)
This is the guy that has a custom bumper sticker made that says something like "MakeYourMillion.com", or "TheMillionaireDad.com" and proceeds to fix it to the bumper of his 1981 Honda civic with faded paint. Now this one never made sense to me, even back when I was doing the other activities.
Now, most, if not all of you reading this post already know that the above techniques will net you absolutely nothing but loads of embarrassment. It is no way to attract friends, build your business, or sell anything. The biggest lesson I learned years ago after being taught that the above strategies were "how you do the business"?
NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, UNTIL THEY CARE ABOUT YOU!
People join people, not businesses. In order to be successful in this industry, or really any industry for that matter, you need to become the kind of person that people want to join. These days, I seldom ever talk about my business unless someone really asks me about it. I spend my time sharing information about internet marketing, social media, my family, or great places to ride Mt bikes. These are some things that I am passionate about, as you can see from reading my blog.
Put your focus on the things in life that you are truly passionate about and people will find you interesting and become your friends, and some of them will join you in business.
The faster you adopt this concept of "Attraction Marketing", the faster you will see success in your business, and your life.
If you are trying to get your head around how to attract people to you on the internet, be sure to request a copy of my Social Media Blueprint. I have broken down the steps to setting up your personal brand and tying it all together with a blog, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. It is delivered to your inbox in bite-sized chunks that you can immediately implement to begin attracting new friends and prospects to you.
If you found this post helpful, or if you have some of your own horrible networking experiences, I would love to hear about them. Please leave me a comment below and share. This post was originally posted on my social media mlm blog

OMG - too funny!
I was actually taught to do some of this stuff myself and even did some of it, making the biggest fool of myself. Definitely a life lesson taught of what not to do ever again.
I love the way you named each one, just way to funny and sadly so true.
Thanks for sharing of what not to do. And, yes, I still know people that do this with a company that I "used" to market.
Randi Moore
thanks jon.
I enjoyed your article. more people need to see this info.
Grocery Store Goon!
How about the one that goes in with pad and pencil and practically attacks all of the shoppers, with this urgent need to share your business with them!
Thanks very entertaining and very true! Nothing is ever accomplished until you bring value, even if its real friendship to someone.
Well done!
Nice article Jon! It certainly brings to mind some embarrassing moments in my network career. Creative and funny technique titles! Also, THANK YOU for posting that zombie picture! I was having trouble figuring out how to insert a picture into my most recent blog on this site, but was finally able to figure out how to do it after viewing your zombie image address. Suffice it to say, I was making a simple task way too complicated.
$100 trash thrower
Yes, I thought that techniques of littering using fake $100 bills was a bit desperate too. Someone who repeatedly makes 2 minutes videos on youtube telling us 'how to drop a dropcard' got very abusive in me telling her that. I mean - how many times do you need to video yourself showing some one how to drop a piece of paper? you'd be fined £50 in the UK - ($80). Hardly impressive marketing.
Too Funny!
Thanks Jon. This was really a funny read. Made me smile!
However, I have to admit that a lot of it hit home. Did we really do those things? Are people still doing them?
Joy
Sad, but true. But in some MLM's, it may be a nessesary evil.
I'm actually involved in one right now that teaches/encourages both, the methods you talk about and attraction marketing, which in my opinion is a confliction of marketing.
But due to nature of company, which is also service based, people don't need to buy our product in order to benefit from us.
They can still save/earn money from what they learn and become aware of.
The conflict is trying to get word out to the general public that we offer this service for free- especially those that are local to you, that you can't reach any other way that would both benefit and need it the most-,without being an annoyance and/or being considered a spammer.
Also,in trying to follow your company mentor/group (the flock of geese mindset)and one you've adopted(BN), get's confusing.
I stick with it for the same reason people who become lifelong companions are together many years- they see more of the good in each other then the negative.I love all that they have to offer.
I'm still fairly new to BN and still learning.
I just love these postings, I learn so much. Bit of a reality check!
Some People Are Crazy
Hey Jon,
Great article and very funny. I am happy to say that i have never performed any of these techniques :)
Take care.
Vince
Nice
Jon you have a real magnetism about you. Have you thought about doing videos? :)
Kim
Very Entertaining!
Oh yeah! I remember pulling some of those stunts. And you know what? My business went nowhere. Yep, even had my upline suggested and promoted some of those stupid stunts. Oh, and you're right about spending the day dropping cards, then rushing home and waiting by the phone. I mean, people are going to be calling like crazy after getting the info I've dropped. Uh, right! Never signed up one person from those type of techniques. Thank you for sharing this realistic info. It certainly was a blast from the past, not to mention humorous.
Hillarious to say the list
I think these individuals should be forgiven since it's a process of learning they are going through. This one cracked my ribs ...

General Learning Curve
Hey Jon,
Loved the post! Great titles to describe the techniques! While it is unfortunate that a most of these techniques? happen every day, a few of the techniques are part of living our daily lives. For example, prospecting while we are out instead of going out to prospect is using our time productively. When I first started in the industry before the internet, #2 & #3 was the way to add names to the list. What was especially painful was on a 95 degree day, wearing slacks and a polo and going to every mall in the area for 3-4 hours. Even though I may have added a handful of names, you are spent mentally and physically from running around like a madman. I still know quite a few companies that teach this with conviction.
In regards to the $100 trash thrower, I agree you shouldn't just liter and leave a trail but the $100, $20 bills with a professional message, is an effective tool. For example, CC slot at the gas pump, books at the bookstore on whatever topic it may apply will get the message in front of the individual. It is no different with an article or a video. The person can decide if the information is worth pursuing or not.
Look forward to see what you come up with regarding Social Media and online marketing techniques. A whole different can of worms.
great article
the worst guy i met is one who goes into my daughters kindergarden, (he has a child there too) and put staff about his company into our children bags.

Great Don'ts examples
Thanks John, now I have some more "Don'ts " on my list :o)
Good to see that all what it takes to succeed in this business is to be yourself.
