9 Leadership Development Training Turning Average Joes Into Alpha Leaders
Leadership development training is highly needed when building and organization.
Whenever we are asked to define a leader, the ideal leader, plenty of us would emphasize traits such as: determination, vision, toughness, knowledge and intelligence- the qualities historically associated with leadership. But what is the proper definition of an ideal leader? Where can leadership development training be found? And what are the basic principles one needs to follow to become a successful leader? We will define both of these things one by one, but let’s discuss first here the definition of a leader.
“A leader is a person who guides others towards a common goal, objective, showing the way by example and creating an environment in which other team members feel actively involved in the whole process”.
In other words, a leader is a “person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal”. This word “leadership” depends entirely upon the three P's (3P's): Person, People and Purpose, as shown by the following diagram.
These 3P's are always in one's mind before taking into account the discussion of what's leadership development training. We will discuss what a leader is and what are the qualities needed by the leader. Let’s jump into the principles of becoming a good leader.
9 Leadership Development Training of an Ideal Leader:
Leadership Development Training 1 :
- Start with Praise and Honest Appreciation: This principle works well at home, work, and for other income opportunities. For example, “Do any of you remember the last time you did something wrong and someone harshly criticized your mistakes, actions?” Those criticisms can have a lasting impression, leaving one uncomfortable, embarrassed, and/or short-tempered. It is oftentimes human nature to focus on the negative things one does, as opposed to the positive. So to become a good leader, you need to begin with praise. Give honest appreciation to your colleagues, friends, relatives, and spouse. If they do anything wrong, be available to help them out of their problem.
Leadership Development Training 2 :
- Call Attention to People's Mistake Indirectly: Let’s say for example, you are working as a manager at a factory and you come across some of your employees smoking, directly under a “NO Smoking” sign. What you need to do is walk over to your employees, hand each of them a cigarette and say, “I will really appreciate it if you guys will smoke these outside the building”. The goal is to politely remind your employees of the policy, without causing any resentment or hostility.
Leadership Development Training 3 :
- Talk about Your Own Mistakes before Criticizing the Other Person: Different lifestyles and experiences affect one’s judgments and actions. Your past mistakes can be lessons for others- to prevent them from making the same errors, without being condescending.
Leadership Development Training 4:
- Ask Questions Instead of Giving Direct Orders: Many people do not respond well to authority. A leader will have a positive reaction if they come off as a friend, instead of as a dictator. By asking questions and making suggestions, such as “Do you think this would work?” it creates an environment of cooperation as opposed to rebellion.
Leadership Development Training 5:
- Let the Other Person Save Face: To prove that another person is wrong, we can destroy ego by causing someone to feel inferior. As French author Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said:
“I have no right to say or do anything that diminishes a man in his own eyes. What matters is not what I think of him, but what he thinks of himself. Hurting a man in his dignity is a crime.”
Leadership Development Training 6:
- Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement:
A leader always praises the positive, even the slightest improvements. These sincere praises inspire and motivate the continuation of better habits.
Leadership Development Training 7:
- Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to: Consider an employee of yours who is no longer productive as before and the quality of work has lowered in standards. You know this employee is capable of better, so you mention to them their actions are not satisfactory and that we need to find a solution to this problem. This none-threatening manner addresses the problem, but allows the employee to improve performance at work without resentment.
Leadership Development Training 8:
- Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct: When mistakes are made, threats, name-calling, and derogative terms are not constructive qualities of a team leader. Instead of this, be liberal with encouragement; make the problem seem easy to do and give your employee the confidence that you have full faith in him or her.
Leadership Development Training 9:
- Make the other person happy about doing the things you suggest: An effective leader should keep a number of things in mind whenever one is going to change attitudes or behavior towards duties, such as: always be sincere, give clear instructions, always be empathetic, and consider the benefits for that person. By keeping these things in mind, one can become a better leader.
In conclusion, we can say that if you apply these leadership development training to your life, you are on the right track to becoming the “Ideal Leader”.
