Are you a business owner on the verge of burnout?

When you started your business were you prepared for the time it was going to take? Have you found yourself working tirelessly day and night and you are unable to remember the last time you had any quiet time to yourself or even the last time you took a vacation?

Most people understand that when you start a business there is a significant amount of stress that comes with the territory. But you may ask yourself at times “This is not what I signed up for.” However, for many entrepreneurs building businesses is an addiction where they often thrive on being in the mix 110% of the time, involved in every decision of the business. This outlook sometimes unfortunately puts business owners and entrepreneurs at high risk of ‘business owner burnout’. They simply feel like they have to do everything and be everything to everyone.

You may think that your business can’t function without you, but the truth is that if you do not take a break at some point, you may not have a business to run. Business owner burnout can be very detrimental to a person and their business. It is very important that you take time to step back and so you can not only enjoy the wonderful journey you are on but grow your business and enjoy its continued success.

Here are some great tips on how to avoid business owner burnout:

1. Make time to do nothing – We all need some quiet time to just relax and refresh. You also need to take a vacation once in awhile to stay in touch with your personal life, your friends and family. Make sure to schedule time off so you can take a much needed break and come back to your business refreshed and ready to go!

2. Get back in touch with the things you value – Chances are if you are following your passion through your work, you will not have an issue with this. However, there may be times that you feel like your work has consumed your life and you can’t seem to find time for the other things you enjoy. Make a conscious effort to get out and do the other hobbies and activities you enjoy. This will take your mind off of business for a while.

3. Challenge yourself consistently – Think out of the box! Has work become a chore lately? Consistently working to improve your business performance, products and services can help fight off burnout.

4. Have realistic expectations and establish limits – You can’t do it ALL! If you are feeling overwhelmed and have too much on your plate, take a step back and slow down. That feeling of overwhelm is a sign that you need to take one step at a time and everything will come back into focus.

It is also important to set clear boundaries and expectations so you are not taken advantage of. This includes managing your time well and knowing when to say yes and when to say no. Make sure to set regular business hours, make appointments with yourself to get things done.
And above all, be on time and expect other to do the same.

5. Deal with your emotions – If you are bottling up your feelings of being overwhelmed or anxious about your business, it is important to talk to someone. Just acknowledging that you are overwhelmed can be a relief in itself. This is a way for you to talk it out and release your pent up feelings.

6. Ask for help – you can’t be everything to everyone and you can’t be a one-man show. It’s ok to ask for help. If you can, hire a good support team that can take on task that you can delegate.

7. Take care of you first – Eat right and exercise. This is possibly the most important tip on the list! If you are run down and not healthy, you will experience burn out much faster. Eat right, exercise and get enough sleep. I know it’s easier said than done, but if you commit yourself to it, you will not only feel better but perform better.

8. Laugh, smile and enjoy everything you have accomplished. You deserve it.

Take time to reflect and remember all the reasons you went into business for yourself. Make sure you also take the time to do something for yourself and your business so you can continue on the path to success and continue to do what you love.
