Constructive Criticism and Becoming A Mentor

Read More: Leadership

Most of us have trouble accepting constructive criticism because we don't recognize it.

We have been criticized negatively for so long and so often by parents, teachers, employers, friends and family, that our backs automatically go up when we hear criticism of any kind.

When a mentor tries to help us, we make it more difficult by fighting the criticism and fighting the criticizer.  We kill the messenger.

The result is often bad feelings on both sides, and many missed opportunities for improvement.

Constructive criticism has to start with ourselves.  Being able to evaluate our own performance objectively is where it all begins.  If we are part of a mastermind group, we are fortunate to have found a safe haven for self analysis without judgement.  Once our self-improvement starts, then we can start mentoring others through our own growth and experience.

Napoleon Hill says ...

"How can you judge others accurately if you have not learned to judge yourself accurately? The ability to evaluate yourself and your performance objectively is critical to your relationships with others and will have an enormous impact upon the level of success you achieve during your lifetime. Unless you can honestly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, how can you ever expect to improve your performance? You must determine where you are before you can develop a plan to get you where you would like to be. If you were an independent, dispassionate observer, what advice would you give to yourself to improve your skills, your work habits, your interaction with others, and your contribution to the organization? Honesty about yourself is the first step toward self-improvement."

We're happy to be part of a Mastermind Group that meets weekly to discuss a chapter of Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich".  If you'd like to learn more, start with this free report.  We look forward to meeting you!

Very True !

When I was younger I didn't take criticism very well it would make me very angry, but now that I am older and wiser, and have an open mind, and enjoy the benefits of a Mastermind group. I have grown by leaps and bounds, and when someone criticizes me it doesn't make me angry anymore, because I took the time to study the books and the Mentor's that allowed me to overcome this hurdle. If we do not learn how to handle criticism from other's we will never grow to our full potential as a person. I have seen it time and time again, and the people that I know who can'not handle criticism always verbally attack the person that criticized them. This is a result of them living in the negative emotions rather than the positive emotions. I am so Glad that I learned about this problem that I had before it was to late.

Thank You Bob and Anna

I Appreciate You

Right on Bob & Anna

So true. I have had a hard time looking at what I do and making the necessary corrections. But with guidance from leaders like yourselves, I find myself improving and growing everyday!

Constructive criticism can provide the best lesson...

...but we must be open enough to listen without ego or defensiveness. It's a hard thing for most of us humans to do but learning to accept ideas from others perspectives will serve us well.

Be Honest With Yourself

Being able to understand yourself and honestly evaluate your own performance is a skill as well as anything else, sometimes difficult to learn! Having mastered that one helps us hear and understand someone's constructive criticism of us and take it the right way, not defensively, and allows us to be able to offer the same and help others in the same way.

Great post Bob and Anna!
