How to Dominate a Niche

Read More: Leadership

Dominate a niche and you will have a constant stream of business.

Why? People want to buy from the best. They feel that the best also have the best products and services.

It’s true. Customers vote with their feet.

Ever seen a restaurant with bad food survive long? Not unless they have some other kind of attraction, but we won’t get into that here.

So there is something to the mass thinking that the biggest companies, the ones with the most sales, must have the best products and services, too.

But it all starts when you first dominate a niche.

Be Everywhere

Let’s say you sell golf mats. Bear with me on this one! It’s important.

Well, your target market is golfers, right? Sure. So you bid on golf-related keywords.

Believe it or not, some people would stop right there. Don’t be one of those people! You can’t just do one thing.

Think about it… how many golfers are typing “golf mat” into a search engine? Not many, unless they are specifically looking for your product.

Let’s say it’s the spouse looking for a present for the golfer. The spouse may know, for example, that the golfer is always looking at the PGA Tour website. Well, if your golf mat isn’t there, someone other golf mat that is will get that sale.

Now think about this: Golf driving ranges. They need mats, right? Well, you need to be in front of golf driving range managers too.

How about golf schools? You want them also.

So you need to be everywhere that a good prospect will go.

Sometimes it even means finding a new market for your product. Great! The more, the better.

Dominate with Size

I’m not talking about the size of your company.

It’s the size of your ad, the number of your articles, the amount you bid for keywords. All of these affect how much of a certain space you dominate.

If you’re the at the top of the search rankings when I search for your keyword, you are have the advantage over all of those below you.

If you are in the newspaper with a full-page, four-color ad among a sea of one-eighth-of-a-pagers in black, you are going to pull prospects’ eyes toward you.

If you are in every special interest site with only the informative, enjoyable articles (or more than your competitors), you will be the one who is read.

Hint: The more you dominate, the more you sell.

Dominate with Distinctiveness

It’s good to be different. Don’t say the same blah-dee-blah others do. Figure out a fresh way to present yourself.

Be conscious of looking different and sounding different.

If everyone is using a lot of words in their ads, use less. Make people curious so they visit your site to learn more.

If everyone is relying heavily on search engines, go heavier on the social media sites.

If everyone’s site is green, go blue or red.

Aim for two notches of quality and creativity above your toughest competitor. Be the breath of fresh air that everyone longs for, and you will be the market leader.

Dominate by Staying Cutting Edge

Notice that all of these ways to dominate your market have one thing in common: You must keep up the effort.

Sorry, but this life is not about getting to a final resting place. That’s for after you’re gone.

You must be aware of what is out there, keep changing your tactics and message, and keep on top of what is happening in your industry.

Yes, it takes work to dominate a niche. But the good news is this: It’s easier to stay on top than it is to get there.
