Is Your MLM Company Any Different Than Corporate America?
Is Your MLM Company Any Different Than Corporate America?
They’re going to stone me for saying this, but…
Six months into my MLM business, I realized it was starting to feel a lot like my old JOB in corporate America.
I know, I heard you just gasp -- "No, Monique, say it ain't so!"
But say with me here.
I was a Manager and I got sick of a few things:
- Having a Boss
- Dealing whiny co-workers
- Having absolutely no creative liberty in my work.
Bottom line -- I didn’t like being a number and I sure as heck didn’t like the fact that I was becoming a robot.
You see, the only way you’ll ever make it in a job like I had was eventually you sit down, shut up and do it their way.
- You take the salary they give you.
- You come early, you stay late.
- You sing their praises.
- You attend every staff meeting and you let everyone know just how thankful you are that they keep you around.
Being raised by two entrepreneurs, this whole song and dance just didn’t sit well with me.
Call me a control freak, a dreamer, a non-conformist -- but I was done with the life I had as a Manager.
I quite my job with no real plan.
I had just got started in Network Marketing and figured I would pursue it with all my heart.
I did, too:
- I networked
- I did hotel meetings
- I went to every convention and training the company offered for six months.
- I knew the script
- I knew the pitch
- I knew the product
- I sang the company’s praises
- I showed up early
- I stayed late.
And then, one hot day in Sedona, I saw what I had done.
I had transferred the same person I was in a J-O-B to an M-L-M.
And guess what? I got the same results.
- I had a boss, aka my upline (4 layers up!).
- I had whiney co-worers, aka my downline.
- I had no creativity in my work.
- I did it just like they taught me, just like “everyone” does it.
- I was a number and I was just as much of a robot, if not more.
All I knew to do was regurgitate the training, memorize scripts.
None of ME was in it!
And to top it off, I was really no happier, no more fulfilled than I had been as Manger of Kirklands.
- I was still singing some big company’s praises.
- I was still trusting everyone more than myself.
- I still was too scared to find my own way.
I will never forget the exact place I was, sitting in a hotel in Sedona, when I decided I was going to find my own way.
A way that worked for Derek and I.
I had got into MLM because it’s being in business for yourself.
The only problem -- I was still not in business for MYSELF. I was in business for everyone BUT myself.
I wasn’t promoting me.
I was promoting them.
Now, I’d love to be able to tell you that when we followed through on our plan to actually build our own business in our own way that the company sent us flowers and our team patted us on the back -- but it didn’t happen.
I’d like to tell you that everyone thought it was a great idea and cheered in the streets, but they didn’t.
I’d like to tell you it will be easier to find your own way, but it’s not.
The truth is, most people should keep attending all the company events, even though they say the same things over and over again.
Most people should walk around like broken records, pitching everyone who stands up straight.
Most people should answer to their upline like they are their boss and baby their downline.
Most people should promote a company, a product or a service because they will never be able to promote themselves.
Because most people don’t have the confidence to know themselves.
To believe in themselves.
To find their own path.
You see, I had to become more.
I had to become more of MYSELF.
Otherwise, my experience would just repeat itself no matter what I did or where I went.
Joe Schroeder explains it like this, “Until you bring your entire self to your personality…everyone will under value you! The world celebrates and loves an original.”
My point is this, it doesn’t matter if you are in a JOB or an MLM -- until you stop being a robot, a number, a copy -- you will be unfulfilled and under-appreciated.
And the world will miss out on the original you are.

I learned the song and dance
I hear you Monique. I had a little more freedom to do it my way, since I live on the other side of the world from my upline, and had no one within a few hundred miles in my MLM company. I didn't know what I was doing so created my own way of doing it. But it's basically the same song and dance. Use this script, this video, this website...
Now we are creating our own music and it's the most beautiful song. ;)
Thanks for a great post Monique! I love your uniqueness. :D
