Leadership Skill Development - The 5 C's to Effective Communication First C

Read More: Leadership

Developing leadership skills in any area of life is both challenging and rewarding. The success of reaching that level is to go through the learning process that every leader must go through in order to reach a certain level of effectiveness. Communication is the ground work that must be laid in order for a leader to share their vision with their followers. However, communication takes time to cultivate. It's important that a leader develops the skill of communication because their influence will be determined on how well the leader can communicate.

There are five C's to effective communication and once understood could shift you in a whole new direction on your leadership journey. Let's explore the first one.

Leaders Need To Be Clear

This may seem obvious, however, leaders have a tendency to only speak from their perspective on things instead of looking at it through their followers eyes. What may be clear to the leader may not be clear to the followers. You have tell your people what your going to tell them, then you have to tell them and lastly tell them what you told them. This will increase the chances of your people retaining the information instead of it going into one ear and out the other. Your followers will then understand what it is your trying to accomplish. Keep in mind that as a leader you will not always get people moving, there are always going to be lazy people following you and so you want to focus your attention on those who are moving. By clearly communicating to your people the way I mentioned earlier, those people who are ready to move will move. Remember, developing leadership skills is a challenging but very rewarding process. Keep your eyes on your vision and the road won't seem as painful.

Thanks Charles

I appreciate the part of leaders needing to look at matters through the eyes of the followers. Or put yourself in their shoes. I think this is important and its helps you think of that persons feelings also.

great intro

Thank you Charles! This is such an interesting topic, and will look forward to future post in this category.
Listening can be a hard quality to cultivate, but when mastered, you are able to communicate effectively and with concern for the receiver.

Make it a fabulous week.

Got to Get The Skills!!!

Thank you Charles for the reminder that a leader must tell the story over and over and over again before the root is set deep and grounded..

Thank you my friend.

Have a Blessed Day,

Thanks Charles!

This is a great reminder to stop, take a breath and remember where the other person is coming from. It reminds me of what Vince Lombardi said at the beginning of each football season to his new players."Gentleman, this is a football" Looking forward to the rest of the "C's"

Leadership is a skill...

Starts by following the leaders you are most suited to, before long you will have your own following!

People only retain 10% of what they hear...

which is why you should restate the things that you want others to know anytime you talk to them. It "drills" it into their heads!

I Love the Part were you said we need to know their perspective.

How can you lead if you only explain things when you have not taken the time to know who you are talking to?
Leaders are CLEAR love it I will work on this

Thank You Charles!

I think communication is a skill sometimes overlooked, when of course we all learned to talk when we were so young, why do we need to learn more about it! But it's true, you have to listen to really be a good communicator, and Clarity is essential! That clarity also must be in consideration of who you are talking to, so that you do not talk at them. Thanks again for such great reminders!

We Have To Stay Focused !

One of my Mentors told me that a Leader has to be able to make decision act on it quickly and change their mind slowly, and I firmly believe that we have to reach our followers at their level to really be able to communicate with them.

Great Article Charles !

You're only going to share...

...the first one today? Great strategy, Charles... I can't wait for the next installment. And today's lesson is very important too: "leaders have a tendency to only speak from their perspective on things instead of looking at it through their followers eyes. What may be clear to the leader may not be clear to the followers." It's easy to say that we must know our audience and speak TO THEM, but keeping that principle in mind on a daily basis takes practice. Thanks, Charles, for adding value to my day.

Where's Your Focus?

It's so easy to focus on the individuals who are lagging behind. Charles is right on! We have to focus our attention on those who are moving. They deserve our attention.
