What Is Respect Anyway?
Well, you could go look it up in the Dictionary...
(Don't bother, I already did ;)
re·spect (r-spkt)

n.

- The state of being regarded with honor or esteem.
- Willingness to show consideration or appreciation.
- respects Polite expressions of consideration or deference: pay one's respects.
- A particular aspect, feature, or detail: In many respects this is an important decision.
I like looking up definitions online because it's good to see just what a word means.
It's easy to loose the essence of a word, especially when it's overused.
"So, Monique, what's this all about?," you ask.
Well, a comment from a friend the other day made me think about Respect and how it relates to the business world.
Better yet, YOUR business and YOUR world!
I started thinking about what happy, fulfilled, profitable, business-people have in common.
This is what came to mind...They Respect The Three Following Things:
- Talent
- Time
- Money
1) When I say "Talent," I mean abilities. They know how to identify key abilities in themselves and others.
They pull these talents out and make them Shine.
They understand the importance of focusing on strengths, instead of weaknesses.
They get that when you use the talent available it will INCREASE.
It's very clear to them when ability is given and not used -- it literally ROTS in the vessel.
Which is more powerful and beneficial to the world?...
Someone who has more talent in their big toe than most, but squanders it OR someone who maximizes the one beautiful talent they have?
How can you identify an Up and Coming Star?
They know their talents and make them known.
2) Time is an interesting thing -- we all are given the same exact amount and there is no way to earn more, buy more, or get more.
Twenty-four hours each day, that's it.
Successful people have learned how to use their time to do the most good.
They see that it's about strategy, it's about planning.
The best time management only occurs when we are PRESENT enough to appreciate it.
They never waste it.
How can you recognize someone who respects their time? They respect yours.
3) Now for Money:
Money is a four letter word for most people.
Emotions swirl around it.
But successful people have learned that nothing has meaning, except the meaning YOU GIVE IT. Money in and of its self is just a piece of paper.
They have aligned their beliefs around money and their desired outcome.
They pick up a dime in the street.
They woo it in with kind words.
Want to know how to predict a person's capacity to earn? It's in exact proportion to their respect for money.
OK, Monique, bottom line it for me!
Unless you Respect TALENT, TIME AND MONEY -- don't expect to have a lot of it!
And if you don't respect them in yourself, you'll never respect them in others.
And if you don't respect them in others, you'll never be in the right crowd.
Respectfully,
Monique Alvarez
