So You want to Be a Leader!?!

Leadership isnt something that we all Possess. I mean
Lets face it Not Everyone is meant to be a Leader and
Most People dont want to Responsibility.  What is
Responsibility Anyway?  Lets take a look - "Responsibility"
- Response-Ability - The Ability to Choose Your Response.
So being a Leader is just a matter of Being able to Choose
Your Response.  Leadership is merely a skill that can be
Taught, Learned and Applied!

If Leadership can be Taught Then What is the Major Difference
Between a Leader and Everyone Else? Proactivity!  Most people
are Reactive People.  Reactive People are Easily affected by their
Physical Environment.  If the Weather is good, They Feel Good.
If it isnt, it Affects their Attitude and their Performance.  Reactive
People can also be Influenced by their Social Environment.  When
People Treat them Well; When Poeple dont treat them well they
become Defensive and protective.  Reactive People are Driven by
Feelings, Circumstances, Conditions and their Environment.

Leaders on the other hand are Not Reactive types of People at all.
Leaders are Proactive.  Proactive people carry their own Weather,
Rain or Shine makes no Difference to them.  Leaders are also Value
Driven; If their Value is to Produce Good Quality Work, It isnt a
Function of Whether the Weather is Conductive to it or Not.
Proactive People are Still Influenced by External Stimuli, whether
Physical, Social, or Psychological.  But their response to the Stimuli,
Consious or Unconsious is a Value Based Choice or Response.

To help you understand this a little Easier lets have a look at the
Language used by Reactive and Proactive types of people:

Reactive People will say;  Theres Nothing I can Do.  Thats just
the way I am.  He/She makes me so mad.  They Wont Allow that.
I have to do that.  I Cant.  I Must.  If Only.

Proactive People say;  Lets look at Our Alternatives.  I can Choose
a Different Approach.  I control My Own Feelings.  I can create an
Effective Presentation.  I will Choose and Appropriate Response.
I choose.  I prefer.  I will.

"Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out."

Most people loves proactive people.

Excellent article! "Leadership development is a life-time journey--not a weekend trip." by John Maxwell
It takes daily focus to live as proactive people on the road to leadership. (and those kind of people are more fun to be around!) :)

Leadership, what a concept!

That's the defining activity between mediocrity and excellence. Not that being mediocre is a bad thing, I just have bigger dreams then that!

Leadership

All leaders have this knowing inside of them,
they know where they are heading and what
they are creating long before it arrives.
Leaders not only inspire action in others, they take
action themselves, action brings about your dreams,
without action your dream stays just a dream!

CONTROL THINGS IN YOUR CONTROL

This goes back to, Don't worry about things you can't control. It's just a waste of time. Worry about things you can control.

You Never Stop Learning

You were able to learn how to read and write, drive a car, and for some of us be parents. Learning how to be a leader is no different. You Can Do IT!

Ah-Ha Moment?

Really good insights in this post, Nick. This really caught my attention today: "...their response to the Stimuli, Conscious or Unconscious is a Value Based Choice or Response." Wonderful thought not only for today, but for every day!

I am able to

Nick - Great stuff. You are so right we all of the ability to choice and every leader I know chooses to be proactive. The choice to keep moving forward everyday not matter what they "feel" like.

Responsibility + Proactivity = Proactability = Leadership

Very good Nick! I love the breakdown here, it's just a matter of how you look at the situation and CHOOSE to react to it. Leadership is born out of taking action and then helping others learn to do the same. Some people don't know until you tell them they actually do have a choice to learn to adjust their reactions, and be response-able!

Thanks for a great read Nick!

I Choose To Be ProActive~

Excellent article Nick~ It's amazing what happens when we live in the proactive relm. Life becomes so much more, moments are more valuable and appreciated. I choose to respond with Love to every situation and experience I have today~ You are a light Nick, thank you for your brilliance!

Reacitve vs. Proactive

What a great way to simplify the meaning of a leader and drive the point home! It seems we live in a culture where everything is so quick and fast paced and we're conditioned to react. Yet, as you pointed out, we can be taught to be a leader and overcome those tendencies to just react to the situations that arise. Great work, Nick!

Positively Proactive

Nick, this article is great with your analogy. Proactive people look at things in a whole different mindset. This article makes you take a look at yourself.(Marketers do you have or know how to get the right mindset? Are you a leader???) If you are a Leader, your mindset is always being dominated by positive thinking and action. I think you make a great point and analogy here. Thank you for being one of the proactive people in our team. Great Value. Thanks for sharing.

Response-Ability

Nick, you did an excellent job in laying out how leaders handle and respond to life. I've never really looked at it this way. Thanks for sharing and always providing value.

Great Point Nick! This was

Great Point Nick! This was such a great article. As leaders we can't be affected by the things around us. It makes me think that there are many things or obstacles that could get in our way BUT we have to stay focused and not allow that to hinder us.

Right on Nick!

Great Article Nick,
To lead is to take the cards you are dealt and find a way to win. You put it so well.

Lead, follow or just get out of the way.....

Thanks Nick, I don't think most people realize the differences between leading, or following, or just getting out of the way. Your article sums it up very well. Thanks for sharing and leading.
