Successful Networking Tips
Do you know what it takes to be successful at networking?
Networking is the development and maintenance of mutually valuable relationships and is all about giving instead of getting and is an essential skill for most business people, but especially for entrepreneurs.
Networking is a great way to grow your business. However, you need to be very clear as to what it means and how to be a successful when it comes to networking for your business.
People like to do business with people they know, like and trust. To gain that trust it takes time to build relationships but once you do, you will definitely be rewarded with loyal customers who will not only return but spread the word about their great experiences.
Here are some tips for successful networking:
- Know your business inside and out. In order to ‘sell’ yourself when you are business networking, you must have a clear understanding of what you do and why, who your target market is and what makes you special and sets you apart from others who are doing the same thing. Being able to articulate this information will also help you get referrals. Bottom line; prepare your elevator speech and know it frontward, backward and sideways.
- Attend local business networking events. This information could be obtained from your local Chamber of Commerce or Small Business Administration Office. You could probably even do a search on the Internet for your area.
- Be the expert. By business networking and speaking at events, getting to know people and spreading your message can help you become known as a powerful resource. By doing this, people will remember you and refer people to you as well.
- Ask open-ended questions. Asking questions such as who, what, where, when, and how opens up the discussion and shows listeners that you are interested in them. When you are business networking remember you are not necessarily trying to sell anything but rather are just trying to get to know people and get your message out there so people know who you are. If you can give and not expect anything in return you will be rewarded for your efforts. Always go in with the outlook of how you can help the people you are talking to.
- Follow through, follow through, and follow through. Got that? I can’t stress enough how important it is to follow through quickly and efficiently on referrals you are given. When people give you referrals, your actions are a reflection on them. Respect and honor that and your referrals will grow. When following up with people, let them know how you enjoyed meeting them and try and set up an initial meeting to discuss things further. This is one of the best tips for business networking.
At first, the thought of networking may make you nervous and feel a bit overwhelming but once you have attended a few events or approached a few people it will get easier. In business, networking is necessary and will pay off in the long run. The more people you can expose to you and your business will increase your chances of success.
