Why a Mentor?

Read More: Leadership

It’s simple common sense that if someone wanted to be a electrician, a builder, a marketer or needed counsel, one would be wise to find someone with experience to act as a source of guidance, advice, and inspiration.  It’s helpful to have someone you can turn to for help, to ask questions of, to seek guidance from and to help keep you on track.  If you needed marriage counseling wouldn’t you want the advice of someone who has had a successful marriage.  If you need help parenting it makes sense to seek the counsel of an experienced mother or father.  Likewise, if you want to learn more about internet marketing, the practical thing to do is seek the advice of an experienced marketer who is willing to train and mentor you.

A true mentor will help you move forward.  Both the mentor and the student get a great deal out of the relationship.  It’s an ideal tradeoff.  The advantages for the student are obvious.  They get training, get direction, and gain confidence as they trust in the advice of their mentor.  For the mentor, there is the joy of helping, feeling appreciated, and the satisfaction of making a difference in someone’s life as you help them become successful.

In business, often you can find a mentor through your own networking circle.  This relationship should be with someone you trust, respect and enjoy spending time with.  There should be a mutual understanding that you are willing to talk or meet on a regular basis.  The purpose of connecting regularly is to learn all you can, to come up with a plan, to act on that plan and to give account of your actions towards your goal.

Don’t let anything stand in the way of finding an excellent, caring mentor who wants to see you grow and become successful.  You can avoid many unnecessary mistakes, failures, frustrations, and reap the rewards for years to come.  Most often the best way to return the favor and to bring the greatest satisfaction to your mentor is when you are in a position to do so, that you will do the same for someone else.

A truly remarkable thing would be to find a mentor who would do all this without charging.  Do you know anyone like that?

Find a mentor....

Mentorship program in schools

My son went to a Charter School grades K-6, and one of the best programs I have seen was the mentorship program, where elders in the community would come to the school and teach the kids in their area of expertise. It worked beautifully, both Mentor and Student gaining tremendous value from the exchange of thoughts, ideas, and activities.

What you say is so true

Hi Lynn, it is really important to find a good mentor for sure. The thing is, it's hard to find someone that doesn't want to sell you something. I'm still looking but in no rush. Thrust is the key word in this business.
Keep up the good work Lynn.
Thanks, your friend
Jack
