Wild Horses Out Back, Gorilla Delivered by UPS
NOTICE: This is a fictional article intended to inform and entertain you. Any similarities to any people, places, or activities are purely accidental, or not.
TODAY
You just purchased an online business opportunity in an MLM-Network Marketing company from your closest friend for let’s say a $1,000.00 dollars and neither of you have ever done any marketing. Now what?
You’re excited, motivated, and have an excellent attitude, you know you will succeed.
The up-line tells you to do some or all of the following to get started in your business.
Make a list of your family, friends and co-workers plus fellow church and any other organizations that you belong to members. Because you will want to offer all of them the same opportunity your friend offered you. It worked for her/him, so it will work for you too. Right?
Make a list of the 25 things you’ll do once you have achieved the success level you desire. Along with this list write your ‘why’ (why are you doing this business), and be sure to list all of your goals. Read that ‘why’ several times a day along with reviewing your goals an equal amount of times.
To help generate an endless supply of leads you’re told that, “you need to join several social networking platforms and make as many friends, as possible”. “Plus it would really be a good idea to post some articles on those social platforms and blogs as well, and don’t forget to make a couple of videos and post them as well”.
Then there is something said about obtaining URL’s, capture pages, auto responders, pay per click, ad words, blah, blah, blah.
TONIGHT
You and this same friend both purchase a ‘wild horse’ from a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sale for the same $1,000.00 dollars. Neither one of you know a thing about training a horse, but its one of the things both of you listed on what you would do once your achieved your level of success. Both of you are still excited, motivated and know you can succeed with training these wild animals. You both are un-stoppable. Nothing can stop you from obtaining your goals.
TOMORROW
Both of your products from the MLM – Network Marketing Company are delivered to each of your front doors via UPS (the Gorilla). Plus the wild horses are delivered too; they are unloaded into each of your back yards. Your friend calls or you call them. What now? Where do you start with the horses?
Well, just call all of your family, friends and co-workers plus fellow church and any other organizations that you belong to members and ask them to join you in working with that wild animal. All of you can just, “do something”.
Then make a list of the 25 things you’ll do with that horse once you have achieved the success you desire (like getting on it’s back). Along with this list write your ‘why’ (why are you doing this activity), and be sure to list all of your goals. Read that ‘why’ several times a day along with reviewing your goals an equal amount of times.
Now, you need to join several horse training and riding clubs and make as many friends, as possible. Plus it would really be a good idea to document your progress, and don’t forget to make a couple of videos and post them as well, it should be very entertaining.
By now it should be obvious that to accomplish the desired goals of either the MLM-Network Marketing or horse training requires “skills”. In the case of the horse training most people would recognize the need for those skills, and would either learn them or hire someone that could teach the skills to them or train the horse for them. Most people know they could be seriously injured or even killed trying to accomplish the desired goals without the proper ‘skill sets’.
For whatever the reason people joining MLM – Network Marketing Companies fail to realize that they have a ‘Gorilla’ that needs skills to be successful also. Everything listed above may be part of getting started in your business but they are not skills, they’re activities. Realize you can have lots of fun without being productive.
You can write that ‘why’ until you cry and die and it will not make you successful. You can have bazillions of friends on facebook; post articles everywhere and it will not make you succeed. The same is true for videos. Hard work or busy work does not guarantee success.
Here is the simple truth about succeeding in any business; skills equal success, success equals money, and money equals accomplishing the goals and dreams you list and fulfilling your ‘why’. Motivation, attitude and desire are also a necessity, but without skills success is not achievable.
Coaches, mentors, and trainers are available, and even the most successful people in the business world use them. Find one. Your skills determine your success

Terry, you have a great knack for telling a story!
Lets get together and chew the fat one of these Arizona desert sunsets, you got any wild horses we can ride?
How did you know?
Terry - What a great way to share and make a point. I did not see you while you where following me around when I first started MLM in 2001.
And practice those skills.
Well said, and you are right, entertaining too. It seems like with most things in life....we need skills to get us proficient and comfortable.
Great Post Terry
Entertaining Yet Very Informative! "skills equal success, success equals money, and money equals accomplishing the goals and dreams you list and fulfilling your ‘why’. Motivation, attitude and desire are also a necessity, but without skills success is not achievable." So True, I love it!!!
Skills = Success
That was my story when I first began my marketing career a few years ago. It wasn't until I found a mentor & coach to teach me the skills I needed for success that I began to see results.
Gotta Have a Coach and a Mentor
I paid thousands of dollars to get that coaching and mentoring. But the Info you teach is what made me successful and it was Free thank you Terry!
Your friend for life Juanita Waterman
What a novel idea!
You need skills to be successful? OF COURSE WE DO, but you're right, Terry, it is easy to let ourselves be inundated with 'the details' and forget the basics. A well-written, entertaining, get-your-buns-in-gear article! Thanks!
Dancing with Our Gorilla
You all know that our Gorilla is a friendly sort and is a lot of fun to dance with, but just how productive is that? Thanks for your comments.
Skills are key to your success!
Great article Terry...the mind works in pictures and what a picture you painted for us. Skills are key in our industry... without them you will be run over by those horses.

Tame the Beast With Skills
Funny how the obvious can be so easily missed, yet every day MLM's are not obtaining their level of success because of their lack of skills. But I bet they don't dare get on that wild horse.
Love the visualization...Thanks Terry
Skills Create Success In Life And Business~
You make me smile! Thank you for your brilliance Terry. I agree, when we learn the skills we can conquer anything that comes in front of us. The best part is that we can ALL learn the skills, there is never any reason to just settle and stay where we are. It's finding those who are willing to do what it takes, to emerge themselves in personal development and hang around leaders like yourself who are there to take a person by the hand and teach them how to be successful.
Wild Horses and the Gorilla
Like I pointed out ...the truth is a little scary...great job of pointing out the truth
Good Advice
Success in the business is learning the skills, who else better to learn from then a mentor?!
Thanks, Terry, that was just what I needed to hear.
Wild Horses and the Gorilla

Wild Horses and the Gorilla
Like I pointed out ...the truth is a little scary...great job of pointing out the truth
You can say that again, and again....
People have the survial instinct to keep them off of a wild animal, because they know they don't have the skills. Too bad they don't think that they need skills to be a success in business. So what do they do, they quit or in the case of the horse, they either get it trained by a professional or it is sold, too. Another unhappy MLM'er was just born.
Great Analogy!
Hi Terry,
I loved this! There's an old saying ... "There is always truth even in jest, but you can't always be certain that you're seeing that truth." Many thanks for making it so clear to see!
REMEMBER, MINDSET + SKILLSET+ACTION=SUCCESS
Terry great article on THE IMPORTANCE OF BECOMING "SKILLED" in any trade or anything you do. If you are an entrepreneur and you working on your Home Base Business /MLM, don't just do "activities" as Terry mentioned, you need to become trained and skilled. If you do not, you will never succeed. Great Value and Great Perspective, Terry on MLM/Marketing. Terry, thank you for Value and analogy.
Always Remember MINDSET+SKILLSET+ACTION=SUCCESS
Thanks Terry
You paint pictures and this one is a great one......................Stay focusued, become trained and skille and Never give up.
Thanks Friend, Jan

Gotta Love The Way You Get Your Point Across!!
You have a way with words, thanks for sharing this story Terry! I totally agree with you It Doesn't matter what Co. you're in, without learning 'THE SKILLS' and having a 'DUPLICATEABLE SYSTEM' in place it's going to be an uphill struggle. Well you know...what happens next, people simply give up in frustration. For every other job you need to be trained so why do people expect success in network marketing without training??
Working with Wild Animal
Need skills in any thing you do
We all do it
Haha what a funny but true article Terry! Why is it that we all think we can just join a mlm company and we have no experience what so ever, and we think we can succeed?! Sounds crazy but we have all thought that at one time. I know now that it takes time, and lots of training just like it would if you were to train wild horses.
Great Analogy!
So many MLM's really do look like a wild horse. I love that you not only draw the comparison, but that you send a message of hope. Skills equal success, success equals money, and money equals accomplishing your goals and dreams. But it starts with learning the skills. Thanks for being a true leader!
Right on Terry!
Without skills we are up the creek without a paddle!
You are a great mentor and anyone who plugs in to you will learn much from a humble servant!

Great Story!
Wow, such a great word picture, loved it! Great way to get us thinking, thanks Terry!
