Mike Dillard Told Me His Big Secret.
This may come as a big disappointment to many of you, but more on that later.
In one of Mike's emails he reveals that the question he usually gets asked most at conferences and usually when he is backed into a corner is,"OK Mike, there's no-one else around, just between you and me, what's the secret of your success." The answer they receive is always the same, but not what they wanted to hear.
Most newbies when they are starting out think that once they have plugged into a system, the rest will take care of itself. Other people are successful and living the dream, so if they believe it enough they can make it happen. It is just a question of time as they soak up the success stories and feed off the top producers who make it look so easy. The only question is WHEN and not IF it is going to happen.
Sadly, the majority seem to miss the connection between thinking a good business and taking massive action to achieve it.
This brings me to Mike's answer, "The secret is, there is no secret".
As he points out, he was no overnight success, in fact it took him years, living on the breadline, before hitting the magic formula. However, throughout that time he continually grew his knowledge from his own massive efforts and by learning from other people, so in the end it was probably more to do with the law of averages where if at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again. You put in enough effort and eventually it will pay off, however, there will be a pile of setbacks along the way, but loads of marketers out there expect it to be handed on a plate to them and underestimate the sheer volume of action needed in those first few months to get their brand and website on a recognised footing.
The mistake is presuming it will come to you, then blaming your mentor or the system when it's not happening for you, when really the answer is staring you in the face. I had the same illusions when I started, coming from a retail background I was a complete newbie and believed all the hype, until maybe 2 months in when the realisation hit me that I just didn't know enough to break through that barrier to getting loads of leads. It was the technical knowledge I lacked, so I knuckled down, got some great advice and it started to change and work for me.
But there was no great secret, I realised my mistakes, learnt how to overcome them, took massive action, persevered and "hey presto" I had a successful business.
As I said at the beginning, this may shatter a few illusions for the dreamers and non-doers out there, but it might just spur on a few people who are starting to ask themselves," I need to know Mike Dillard's secret to success".
Trying to keep it real.
