3 Tips When You Miss Your Goals
Ok, you got all fired up a few weeks (or months ) ago and set some really solid goals. You made your plan and then you worked you plan.
Now, you missed them – Now what?
My company just finished a major cruise incentive that had hundreds of people qualifying for a 5 night/6 day cruise out of Florida. More people than ever qualified for this major cruise than ever before. Actually, a lot of people that have only been in our business for less than 90 days, made the cruise!
However, there are people that did not make it.
Many worked hard but it just didn’t work out for them this time. Many wanted to achieve higher levels but that didn’t happen. Many will just have to use this as a learning session.
Learning from a failed goal is just as important as achieving a goal. When working with goal setting, it revolves around four simple activities: Plan, Do, Check and Adjust.
Make your plan, do your plan, check your results and then adjust your plan.
With these activities in mind, here are 3 basic tips of help you:
1. Forget the past. You missed the goal so now it’s over and the longer you dwell on it the worst you’ll be. Everyone misses goals. Every top producer I know has had some major goals that they totally blew. Some of them were not even close. For years I have made goals and missed them.
People miss goals all the time. So what.
So you didn’t make it. Draw a line and forget it. You can’t change anything by moping around thinking about your lack of success or results.
2. Review what you did or didn’t do. Did you follow your plan exactly? Was your plan at fault? Was it activity or results that let you down? Did you review your plan with your upline BEFORE you starting out and doing it?
Focus on what you think you did right and what you think you did wrong. Where do you think you missed it? Talk to your upline and find out where they think you missed it?
What you are looking for is “what needs to be changed”. This is not a “beat up” session on yourself! What didn’t work and what did. What went wrong?
3. Set a new goal. Now that you had a chance to make a goal and work it, you’ve learned a lot of new info about your goals, your activity and yourself - even if you didn’t make your goal.
By checking and reviewing what you did right and wrong, you are in a very strong position to make a better goal that has a much better chance of success. Your activity and expectations should be better aligned with what you can and can not do.
Goal setting is as much an art as an action. As you learn you can adapt. You change what is not working and add in what will work. If that fails, recheck and redo the goal again.
You’ve learned and now it’s time to use your experience to get even closer to success.
Here’s the worst thing you can do – NOT SETTING A NEW GOAL IMMEDIATELY!
