Adversity is the Mother of Invention - How to Overcome Adversity

Read More: Mindset

I was born in Hove, Sussex in the UK. At the age of 8 months, I got on a banana boat with my parents and our lovely Irish Setter dogs, and we set sail for the beautiful island of Jamaica, in the Caribbean.

I was educated in Jamaica, and because it was, "the thing to do" in Jamaica at the time, I was sent to boarding school. The school was thirty minutes drive away from our property, and the unique thing in my case, was that I was sent to, "Servite Convent" at the tender age of three!

I used to have to stand on a stool to make my bed. I learned at a very early age the importance of building relationships. Very quickly, I became the, "pet" of a few select authoritarian figures in the school.

I came home on weekends and still remember standing at the fence on Friday afternoons after school, looking out for the sky blue Peugeot that collected me. It belonged to the leading veterinarian in the parish. He would come for me after tending to animals all day, and take me to my farm as it was on the way to his house.

My dad, God bless him, used to take me back to school on Sunday. We had some amazing conversations. I was the last of three children born to my parents, and my older siblings were 8 and 10 years my senior. They had gone off to boarding school in England, (which they later begged my parents not to do to me) and I think my parents thought they were doing me a favor by sending me to this school where there would be other children of my age and circumstance.

This continued for the next seven years until I was ten.

Then I went to Kingston, and completed high school. After that I went to Toronto, Canada and obtained a
B Sc degree there.

It was at this time that my world seemed to me to be falling apart. In a period of two years, my dad died, my mother suffered a massive stroke, (thankfully she survived, and is with us to this day..25 years later), and the man I was to marry, left Jamaica. I refused to leave my mother and the responsibility of the family estate, so that was just not meant to be.

This story has a happy ending as soon after this I met the man who would become my loving husband and the father of my three beautiful children. I thank God for bringing him into my life. I am very happy, work out of my home and am always surrounded by my wonderful family. Life is sweet.

Why am I telling you all of this? Well firstly I want to share it with you. I also hope to show you that the issues that we face in life, that often seem insurmountable, very often contribute to strengthening us. They cause us to become people who will push through obstacles toward success.

Adversity is the mother of invention. I never spent a lot of time with my parents as a child. As a result, I was determined to design my life with that as a focus. I love being around my kids, while at the same time, securing their financial future.

If you have lost a job, or you have one but want to spend more time with your family, there is something that you can do!

The very first thing you need to do is adjust your mindset and make a change NOW!
