Jeremy Lin has become the hottest topic in the Basketball arena right now and in this post I will be bringing out some lessons that the network marketing professional can use.

For those of you that have been hiding under the rock and have no idea what I am talking about, let me give you a brief background of this 6-foot-3 Harvard graduate.

Lin, 23, has become the National Basketball Association’s latest star, with a meteoric rise from bench warmer to starting point guard after scoring a 25-point game against the New Jersey Nets. This is from a guy who never got an athletic scholarship and graduated with an economics degree from Harvard University.

He has done so well for himself that President Obama tuned to watch him play when the New York Knicks beat the Sacramento Kings, 100 to 85 on Feb. 15.

So what are the lessons that a network marketer can glean from the basketball star?

1.     Never Play God

Looking back now, so many multi-dollar basketball teams would be wondering how they overlooked Jeremy Lin. But the truth is that judging by his past achievements, he should not be a basketball star.

He didn’t have any experience as a star. He graduated from Harvard, a school with no history of producing basketball stars. It is also a fact that there aint many Asia stars in the American professional basketball.

How does this apply to the Network marketer? You will be shocked to know that the people who you have labeled ‘The Least Likely to Succeed’ will eventually be sponsored by someone else and become a star. Due to our selfishness, we fail to present the opportunity to some people because we think they wont make us money. In the book, ‘Your First Year in Network Marketing’, Mark Yarnell wrote of a woman who was at the lowest rung of the economic ladder. Mark didn’t think Network Marketing was for her. How wrong he was? He eventually presented the opportunity to her, she ran with it, and became a Network Marketing Superstar.

 2.     Never Give Up

It was rather odd that Jeremy Lin failed to impressed talent scouts throughout most of his high school and college basketball career. No high profile team cut him a deal. In fact the New York Knicks offered him a one-year contract in 2011. I am sure they are seriously thinking of reviewing his contract details.

Lin never took it personally that others were unable to recognize his value during his budding period. He understood what he could do and he did constantly and consistently whether people were watching him or not.

Same for you as a Network Marketer. Until you learn to be constant and consistent in your network marketing business, you will not make a headway. Others may not see the value you have to offer, but you don’t stop going in the direction of your dreams. Never take it personal that others don’t see what you are seeing. Some are just not meant to leave their pathetic state, don’t let them stop you!

3.     Grab Opportunities When They Present Themselves

It is known that Jeremy Lin’ success could be partly attributed to the injuries of his teammates. He had been preparing himself for opportunities like that, and when the opportunities came, he grabbed them with both hands.

As a network marketer, be on the lookout for opportunities. Is your company looking for leaders to train the team, volunteer. You are on a prospecting call and the person in charge is looking for people to role-play with, raise your hands. Use all opportunities you have to display the leader in you.

4.     Find a New Way to Add Value

In addition to his determination and effort, Jeremy Lin has become a huge success story because he knows how to shoot and pass with dexterity. Lin knows that for him to be taken serious, he had to produce something ‘extra’ before he would be rewarded for his efforts.

As a Networker, you need to understand that you have to find a way to add value before you can expect anyone to give you recognition. I see so many networkers complaining of not getting a lot of leads and signups, but the question you have to ask yourself is if you truly have something to offer them that separate you from the other person begging for their attention. In other words, you need to earn the respect of your potential leads and team members by the amount of value you bring to the marketplace.

5.     Focus on Building Your Personal Brand

One thing I see Jeremy Lin doing now is not just managing his existing brand well, but also improving on it. When told that President Obama tuned him to won his game, he responded by saying that he feels very very honoured and that he is deeply humbled. That humility is sure to warm the hearts of a large section of people. He has over 400,000 followers on twitter, up from 200,000 about two weeks ago. That’s brand building!
