Success Is 50% Pure Attitude
Successful people in any field have a higher than average amount of two things:
- Positive Self Image (PSI)
- i-CAN attitude
Positive Self Image
Everyone is born full of a Positive Self Image (with the small exeption of some people who have trauma in the womb) this is because we have had no experiences to contradict this.
What then happens is we are conditioned to become 'workers'. The whole education system is set up to define success as getting a good job or developing a set of skills we can 'sell'. By definition this starts to set limite on what we beleive we are possible of doing. Entreprenueship is never part of the curriculum until University level.
One study showed that parents tell their children to 'stop' doing approximately 12 times a day. Multiply that out to age 21 and they have been told 'no' c70k times. If every parent made a promise to at least balance those negative statements with positive ones then you would have a pretty positive young adult. If you aimed to double the number of positive statements then you would have a very positive young adult.
The important thing to remember is PSI is separate from how well you can do a task. There are any number of artists for example who produce great art yet have a low PSI. In business the importance of PSI relates to how you perceive a problem. People with a good PSI look for ways to overcome the problem. Those with a low PSI give in much quicker.
PSI is based on your emotions. Emotions are part of your sub-conscious and deeply embeded. As a result changing your PSI is something you have to work on. Things like hanging round with positive people who support your goals, visualization where you visualize how you want to behave and writing out then reading your gools daily all increase your PSI. Doing the opposite of all these things will reduce your PSI.
As a Leader in a business opportunity you would do well to assess a team members PSI. It's a lot easier to help someone improve their mindset than loose them and recruit another team member. People are different and smart Leaders recognize this. They then look at ways to coach the person. Dumb Leaders keep looking for people like themselves and will only work with that type of person. Using this approach you actually cut out a sizeable proportion of the population.
So if your advertising campaign says that anyone can do your business opportunity then follow through on that promise. I believe this could explain why so many people stop in our industry. A lack of understanding how people 'tick' and assuming what works for you will work for everyone can be a real blindspot.
i-CAN attitude
i-CAN attitude is based on your rational brain. This is far easier to change. For example let's imagine you decide you want to drive. You book some driving lessons, study and then pass your driving test. This is laregly i-CAN in operation. All the choices you made were conscious decisions and you decided you could become a driver. If you had a low PSI then that process may take a lot longer however you could still do it. So there is a link between the two,
As a Leader in this situation your role is to possibly challenge someone to take action. It's never your job to do it for them, because they will never learn. For example if your driving instructor took over driving the first time you made a mistake you would never learn. You have confidence because you know they can take over if needed in an emergency. Confidence is key here. You need to give your team the confidence they can do something.
If you are thinking that this seems a lot of work, then think about the alternative. Your aim is to build a long term sustainable business. That is much harder to do when you have to keep rebuilding your team. Yes people will leave that's normal. However a stable core team will be your greatest asset.
So focus on improving the PSI and i-CAN attitude in your team and you will be well on the way to developing successful business.
