What I Want To Hear From My President – It Could Resolve The Current Mosque Brouhaha
“My fellow Americans,
Like many of you, I have mixed feelings about building a new Mosque in close proximity to the former site of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan.
However, my personal feelings in this matter are irrelevant. So are yours!
Here is why.
By right, as a free people we Americans have instituted a government of laws founded upon certain fundamental principles, not the feelings of the moment.
As your president, I am honor-bound to preserve, protect and defend those fundamental principles in accordance with the law, which is our Constitution as informed by those principles.
One of the fundamental principles guaranteed by our Constitution is the inalienable right of people to practice their religion as they choose pursuant to the law without any outside interference.
Given that our mainstream religions often seem to be never more zealously embraced than when they are scorning, or exterminating, people who are different, this is no small achievement.
No other people in the history of Western Civilization ever accomplished a real world guarantee of religious freedom. We Americans were the first, and the life-affirming hope of humankind the world over has been the stronger for it ever since.
If some of you still have a problem with that, there is a remedy.
Come up with a new fundamental principle more worthy of us as Americans than our current principle of religious freedom for all. Then win elective office, go to Washington and change the law.
Until then, as Americans there is no other alternative.
We will all just have to be resolved to behave like a free people with equal justice for all under the rule of law.
Good luck to you all.”
