I just received an email from David Wood dealing with his early days in network marketing spent in Amway. (My first involvement with network marketing was with Amway as well. I often refer to this time period as my network marketing graduate school as their training was top notch. The leadership which took me under their wings taught me life lessons I will never forget relative to serving both customers and fellow members of my network marketing company.)
David’s email concluded “[In network marketing] We're not in the business of selling products, or services. We're in the business of CASTING a vision and BUILDING a dream.”
Okay, you got me on that one. Building a dream? Building a dream for someone else like someone who was part of my network marketing group? Get real. I was hardened by years of building a business. Dealing with employees who were oftentimes at odds with company policies.
Now you want me to take a bunch of my network marketers to the boat show, for example, so we can walk up the aisles of boats and dream build? Somehow I was hearing the word “dream” but it sunk into my head as “dweam”…as though I was a three or four year old.
But you know what? Amway had a point with dream building. If you are able to get your network marketing team members to start dreaming and start dreaming big, they can cope with any obstacle (such as their broke brother-in-law, Fred, who nags at them with statements like “…them pyramid schemes never work. I can’t believe they hood-winked you into another one). As well-known author, Austrian neurologist and concentration camp survivor Viktor Frankl states: "He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how."
What is your why for doing network marketing? Is it that dream you have of one day walking into your boss’ office and firing him/her? Is it the financial freedom of not working at all? Is it buying one of those boats, selling your home, and being at sailing 24/7/365 (as does my brother-in-law)? Or is it as mundane as being able to effortlessly make the month and your paycheck even out?
If your dream is big enough, folks, the “no’s” you receive to join your business will not matter to you as you realize that each no brings you closer to a “yes”. So, from one “dweamer” to another, get your entire team dreaming once again and you will see tremendous growth in your business.
