"You Owe Me !" The Danger of Entitlement
There was a man who was very tired of working. He didn’t make much money and didn’t see any chance of making more in the near future. He didn’t like his current living situation, but couldn’t see any way to change it. He had minimal skills and ambition and didn’t think he could make it through school. He was just tired of living this way. He deserved better. He worked hard. He decided to get some money quickly. He went to the ATM and put a blank piece of paper in a deposit envelop. He put the envelope into the machine and deposited a pretend $5,000 check. He then immediately withdrew the maximum that he could, $1,000. He did this over the next two days until he had $3,000. He thought he wouldn’t get caught. He then went and bought new clothes and put a deposit down on a condo and got ready to move in. Of course, this all came crashing down and he ended up getting arrested, having to back the money he took, and putting himself in a far worse position than he was before. This man who was so tired of life, who felt that he deserved better even though he wasn’t willing to work for it, and was willing to take a huge risk to get what he wanted is 19 years old. At 19 years old he felt that he had worked enough and that somehow it was okay to take what he wanted even though he hadn’t earned it.
The entitlement thinking can hit anyone at any time. The idea that you deserve something even though you have not worked to earn it becomes more common every day. Even more common is the idea that you work hard and so you are entitled to something more than you have or that you are somehow entitled to take it from someone else.
Multilevel marketing is particularly prone to this type of thinking. Sometimes this is from promises made by an overzealous distributor of wealth with little or no work. (Promising that the business will grow and the money will come automatically if you just buy the required amount of product every month.) Or promising automatic results from some kind of system they have developed. Or, maybe the worse promise of all, that they will build the business for you.
A business is a business and no business happens automatically. Someone somewhere has to do some work and usually has to do some pretty hard work on a consistent basis. Of course there are ways to work smarter and more effectively, but somewhere along the line, work has to happen. Money is exchanged for things of value period. You can’t get more money unless you have something of value (skills, product, whatever) and you can only exchange that thing of value for money if you work.
This all may seem obviously, but many people seem to never learn this principle, or, as they get older, forget it. Everyone is looking for the easy way. Multilevel marketing can offer you an opportunity to provide something that people will pay for, but it is up to you to make that happen.

How Long To 10k?
Good one, Dr. Robin!
It's the same thinking that allows someone with a $30000 job to ask how soon they will be earning $10000 per month in MLM.
My answer is usually, "It took me 47 years of training and experience to reach $65000 per year teaching. Let's hope it's a lot quicker than that!"
It may sound smartalec, but it helps to put things into perspective, and paves the way for an explanation of what has to be done. How long it takes will depend on the effort and skill of the individual.
Thanks for the wake up!

entitlement leads to poverty
Great article Robin- I try to screen people with this mindset when we initially talk. I actually met with someone last week who asked me when I'd be able to get them to 12k a month. My response was, I won't and I don't think this will work...and walked away. I don't need another person to babysit- we all enjoy leaders who take initiative instead of having their hand out. Thanks for the reminder!

but mere talk leads only to poverty.

Thanks for the article Dr.
Thanks for the article Dr. Robin. All too often we are faced with prospects who are loaded with the entitlement mentality. Seemingly as though we are supposed to build the business for them. I know this to be true because I was one of them. Upon first entering the MLM arena I thought things would happen for me much quicker than they did and when it did not I was expecting help that never arrived. I did not have anyone to blame but myself.
I have always worked and quite hard I might add. Always the model employee. But for my OWN business, somehow I figured someone esle was supposed to build it. I now work very hard at my own business because I know that if I don't build it, it won't get built.
Thanks again for the article.
Thanks Gary

8 Groups of Distributors
What you have just described here is one of the eight groups of distributors. What is known as the slave driver group. They are the group that want their sponsor to do everything for them. Give me a hot shot, do this, do that. And since they never have to work for it, nothing is ever good enough for them. They are constantly looking for their upline to create a welfare cheque for them. It's always more, more, more. Luckily they are only one of eight groups. I would also argue that this group is rare which is also lucky. The important thing for distributors is to know which group they fall into, only then can they make the necessary changes in order to achieve success.
Danger of Entitlement
Dr. Rushlo,
I too, thank you for the article. It is very well put. I must add, though, that some offers do sound too good to be true. And, for someone who is down and out on their luck and looking for a quick fix to their pain; those type of offers are just what they 'think' they need. It is my belief that as MLMs, we must present ourselves to be as transparent as possible. Our character and integrity must speak for us. New prospects must be made to know that there is much work to be done before reaping the fruits of our labor. If, done properly, of course, the fruits will be immeasurable.
I, for one, fell into this trap. I have more partially opened boxes and programs that I've read, than I care to mention. There is also a website or two that I will revisit. I only got serious when two very trustworthy guys gained my confidence, and told me what this business is all about, and how they could help me achieve my goals . While I am by no means an expert, I am learning a lot about the business, and I'm putting that knowledge to work for myself and I am beginning to see the fruits of my labor.
Everyone who joins my organization must understand and be willing to commit to this precept.
Thanks,
Otis Brown
