Philanthropy In Business
Despite natural disasters, poverty, hunger, disease and impending environmental threats dominating the news, a happier trend has unfolded – that of generosity. Countless announcements of wealthy individuals donating hundreds of millions, even billions of dollars to worthy charities and causes at times reaches the press. Celebrities are commonly observed in using their fame to highlight serious world problems. Even those of modest means occasionally contribute to a variety of causes.
The trend in giving seems to be snowballing in some lands. One source stated “At the beginning of the twenty-first century, there are more philanthropic foundations holding more assets in more countries than ever before.” As the ranks of the wealthy swell, giving is expected to continue. Even as the wealthy die and bequeath their assets, the share going to charities is expected to increase. The British news journal The Economist, stated that we may be seeing the dawn of “a golden age of philanthropy.”
Joel Fleishman says in his book The Foundation: A Great American Secret—How Private Wealth Is Changing the World. Some eager, wealthy philanthropists try to apply methods that gave them success in business.
Financial titans such as Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller, Sr., decided to use their fortunes to help the needy. These benefactors observed that traditional charities, while feeding starving men and women or nursing sick children, did not address underlying causes. Having sensed the need for a more strategic approach to giving, they created institutes and foundations that would encorage social change and fund research aimed at eliminating problems at their roots. Since those earlier years, literally tens of thousands of such organizations have been established worldwide with well over 50 of them accumulating assets exceeding one billion dollars.
A former U.S. president announced to a group of philanthropists in 2006; “It is impossible to overstate the impact private giving will have on public good.”
The word “philanthropy” comes from a Greek word that means “love of mankind.” What will a successful business do for those we love the most? How about giving to those closest to us? Families aren’t perfect, but the underlying motivation for most people is the need to be loved and nurtured. If we can earn a living online, working from home, not having to trade time for money our families will benefit and grow. What good is there to making millions of dollars if we have no-one to share it with? What will endless hours in commuting or working in an office achieve for our overall (physical, emotional, financial, spiritual) well-being and that of our family?
Release yourself from the burden of daily commutes, office politics, answering to a boss, taking scheduled annual leave, working to the clock, trading time for money, being overworked and underpaid and find comfort in working for yourself, for those you love, for those you care about in the world, from home.
