This is a quick story my wife shared with me yesterday.
I had a dream about it last night and thought I’d share it in pictures with you today.

It’s is a story of setting sail on your own.
A story of becoming an entrepreneur and learning to overcome adversity.

This is a story of becoming a leader and learning what you’re made of.

Let’s Go …

We all start out pretty much the same way.
We get this big idea in our head to start a business or to do something to work for ourselves and maybe work from home. Independence. Financial freedom. Time freedom. Go where I want, when I want, with whom ever I want.

It’s the dream that so many would be entrepreneurs play through their head at night while they sleep and as they endure one more grueling hour of traffic or suffer through another belittling phone call in the cubicle as a “customer” tells us how much our service sucks.

So we muster up some courage, organize our thoughts and set sail …

Setting Sail

And just as quickly you find yourself in strange territory.

You’re out at sea fishing – working your opportunity.
The storm is tossing you all over the place.
But You persist.

the Storm

You start to feel lost and overwhelmed in the constant waves.
You begin to doubt your plan and your navigational instruments.
Your boat is capsized and you have to stay afloat or die.
But You persist.

Plans Overturned

You’re struggling to swim, every stroke draining you of energy.
All the while you’re fighting for your life to avoid being eaten by sharks.
And You persist.

Swimming with Sharks

Finally you spot land.
It’s unknown territory, but at this point better than nothing.
You get your second wind and hustle towards the shore.
You persist.

Unknown Territory

As you crawl to shore you breath a sigh of relief – safe at last.
It’s pouring down rain so you build a hut.
You persist.

Shelter From the Storm

Just when you start to get warm and cozy, a feeling of accomplishment and safety, lightning strikes and the hut bursts into flames.
You barley escape the fiery disaster.

lightning

Now you’re cold and wondering what to do – you think all hope is lost.
And you are ready to give up.

After all you’ve been through you just don’t see how it could get any worse.
What’s the point?

Anger, fear, disappointment … all of these emotions start to creep in and get the better of our minds. And we start to cast blame and look for reasons why this happened to us.

My navigational gear must have been broken.
The plan that fisherman told me about must have been wrong.
That map I bought wasn’t worth it.
I should have had better sails.

Persistence seems futile. And you’re ready to quit.

Just then a coast guard cutter appears off shore.
And a rescue helicopter lands on the beach, illuminating the dark stormy night.
They prepare to lift you from your despair and get you back home

Breakthrough

As the rescue chief checks if you’re ok and prepares to lift you away he says …

Wow … That was a smart idea to build such a big fire!
If it weren’t for the flames flickering in the dark we never would have seen you.

Moral of the story …

Just because the plans you made and the way you thought your journey would look may have gone up in flames, or so it appears, hope is not lost ….

Up in Flames

  • You know you can stay afloat in the face of adversity.
  • You know how to avoid the sharks.
  • You know you have the stamina to swim as far as you have to, to get where you must go.
  • You know how to build a hut from scratch.
  • You know you have the survival skills, mental callous and strength to make it through even the most desperate of times.

And now you also know …
When things look their most bleak and you are just about to give up, is when you are probably the closest to the time you have a huge break through.

Someone was looking for you.
You just had to shine a brighter light for them to see you.

You can succeed even if your hut is on fire …

Never, never, ever give up!

Never, never, ever give up!

Live Long and Prosper.

Great Story!

This is just awesome Richard! I think it comes at a time when many people are looking into themselves and wondering what it's all about. I know it gave me a boost when I read it, after experiencing two very slow months in my "brick & mortar" business - but you've reminded me to light my fire! Thank you. Michael

Great Article On Persistence

That's cool, Richard.
We've all got our own story, don't we?
Some are worse than others, but we all gotta
make our own unique way.

Dave Kotecki — Mon, 02/01/2010 - 7:09am

It's all in the mind isn't it?

This brought to mind an illustration I saw where the speaker placed a 2x6 flat on the stage. He invited people to come up and walk across it. They all did with ease. Raising it 6" off the floor was still a piece a cake for everyone. The plank, raised again to 24" off the floor, caused a few to hesitate although most did it. Six feet and the number dwindled drastically. Then he asked the group if that plank was the only thing between you and your child who was in a burning building, would you walk it if it was 24' above the ground? How about 74'?

We all knew it didn't matter how many feet high it was, we would walk it if it meant the life of our child. It's all in the mind and we can overcome anything if we choose to.
Great story,

You did it again

Richard, like I've said before----when is your book coming out. You are a great writer, touching the heart without being ooey-gooey, realistic yet inspiring, speak of real issues---hitting them dead on center.

This article really touched me and just what I needed this morning.

You truly make a difference in this world. Thank you!

Thanks for the inspirational reminder

Yes we all have our stories, and as I reviewed mine, I know that come what may, I will persist and continue to grow, learn and reach for the stars!

Thanks Richard for reminding us that it is possible and to never give up!

So True

This is exactly the way it feels sometimes and that is when I have learned to hang in there because a breakthrough is right around the corner (even if it is a long corner).

Thanks for the great pics to go along with such relatable writing.

Sunday Sermon

Well I have to stay truthful and let you know, it sounded more like a Sunday Sermon to me than a business article, but I get the point. Nice idea with the photo’s though, I may use that idea myself.

Thanks Richard, you’ll probably see me in church for once this Sunday.

Three Feet From Gold

Richard,

Thanks Richard, your message speaks volumes. I'm reading this great book called "Three Feet From Gold", it's all about never giving up! We need to stay strong. If we are determined to ride the waves and brave the storms, the sun will shine on us again. That light is our hope and strength reminding us that we need to go on. We will get there, but if we give up we will never know how close we really were.

Dana Prieur — Fri, 02/12/2010 - 9:41am

Inspiring!

Thank you Richard. It was a story most of us know well! I love the pictures to go along with the story.

It is so true and so simple, never, ever, ever, ever give up!

Love Morning Inspiration

Thanks Richard, your words are very inspirational. I think we've all been there at some time in our lives, I know I have. But knowing and trusting that perseverance will overcome that obstacle keeps me reaching for the stars.
Never stop believing!!!

Over-the-horizon vision

Very inspiring story Richard. The graphics bring home your point so well too.
It's always great to have a supportive, uplifting wife!

The Bible reminds us that ALL things work together for good .......as your story points out.

Giving up is not an option worthy of anyone's time.
Keep your faith and pass the finish line(s). It maybe just over-the-horizon.

Wishing you the best.

he he ... I still get all giggly ...

he he ... I still get all giggly and absolutely humbled when comment on my writing. It isn't my story as some of you recognize; just my adaptation. But something I think we all can use in those times when we just want to throw our hands up and say F-it!

To every one that commented - thank you.
But I'd especially like to say to Paul .. if that is what you got out of the story, it wasn't me you heard brother. And I would head his advice - see ya on Sunday! =o)

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend - Live Life Large!

That was Awesome.

This was a very well written and inspiring article with great pictures that perfectly visualized your story about persistence.

Persistence is key. Without it we wouldn't have some of the great people we look up to today and we wouldn't have the mentors and coaches we follow. So we must persist so that we could not only help ourselves, but help those who look up to us.

Thanks for such a thought provoking article.

Don't Quit

Such is the story of the majority of successful entrepreneurs. No matter what they're faced with there's always something inside that says don't give up, keep going.

This is the secret pure and simple, nothing magical about it. Its a shame most of us go to our graves with our good stuff still in us if only we wound have persisted, because success was right around the corner.

Never Give Up!

Great illustration!

When we get knocked down, we have to pick ourselves up. We can't give up in the face of adversity. Its a mindset thing. We must believe we can do it. We must have the will to push through.

We know there is always someone looking for us. Only we can solve their problem. As you say, we just need to shine our light brighter so they can find us.

Never, never, ever give up!

Ian Brown — Fri, 02/12/2010 - 8:11pm

Excellent

Richard: This is a wonderful illustration of what most of us have probably experienced. I know I've been there more than once - several times, in fact. But I have simply refused to give up. Sometimes I have wondered why I keep going, and often others have advised me to quit, but I have nevertheless carried on. Sometimes it's like walking through a dark forest, sometimes like, as in your illustration, our only shelter going up in flames. Maybe in that dark place we need to light a bonfire - set some trees ablaze. Create light where there seems to be none; create our own heat when things get cold. Most people come running when there's a fire because they want to know what's happening. Let's start a fire in our business and see how many people we can attract!

Diane Stephenson — Fri, 02/12/2010 - 10:52pm

WOW

Richard,

Wow!

As usual, you cut to the heart of the matter. Loved this. My prayer for you is that your fire brings you the greatest success in life that you can possibly imagine. Of this I have no doubt, you are made of the good stuff, and failure is not an option for you. Keep on keepin' on!

Laura McCallum — Sat, 02/13/2010 - 12:31am

What A Great Story Thank You

Wow what a great story and especially describing our stories. We all have them as the comments mention though what a wonderful way of saying it. Very inspiring and inspiratational. Thank you.

Never, never, ever give up!

What a great inspirational story! When you look at all of the successful internet marketers and MLM'rs today please don't think that success just happened to them. All of them were at this point in their lives and business. You will find that it is very easy to say those 2 killing words...:I Quit!

No one ever told you it was going to be easy. When or if you got involved in ANY business and the person who got you involved said it was easy then guess what...they told you a big fat lie!

Don Egnor — Sat, 02/13/2010 - 9:01am

Great Story!

Thanks Richard,

As I write this, I feel I'm this person you're writing about. I just can't get everything to come together just right so I can get ahead. Perhaps today my rescue will come. Thanks again for the inspiration.

Wilf Richter — Sun, 02/14/2010 - 11:34am

Wonderful Illustration!

And quite an inspiration too! Your message gives hope to every network marketer and makes it very clear .. to attain success, never, never give up!

Very uplifting!

Seeing is Believing

It is inspiring knowing that so many go though this but do come out. Being successful means never quitting. The ride is rough but when you finally land...you know your life has changed!
