THE DASH ~ “Mach II With Your Hair On Fire” by Richard Bliss Brooke

~ THE DASH ~

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend.

He referred to the dates on her tombstone; her life from beginning to end (1934-1998).

He noted that first came her date of birth and spoke the ending date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth ... And now, only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own; the cars... the house ... the cash, what matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard ... are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left, that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough to consider what's true and real, and always try to understand the way other people Feel.

And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more, and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile... Remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read, your life's actions to rehash ... Would you be proud of what they'll say about how you spent your dash?

It Really Isn't All About "Things"

It's so easy to get caught up in all the 'things' this life has to offer. But when it's all said and done and we enter into life's final chapter, we don't get to take any of that stuff with us. The memories we leave behind will be those times we spent with people, the time we gave, the words of encouragement, the hugs, the laughter and the sincerity of heart.

Living Life Filled With Love And Joy!

Very touching article Marty. Really makes you think. Am I walking and demonstrating Christ's unfailing love toward every person, every moment in my life? I appreciate this article because it makes me look in the mirror, I want to hear "Well Done, Good And Faithful Servant!"

This is great information

This is great information because we are connecting with people. We are building relationships and you can't fake a friendship. You have to appreciate them and listen to what they say. Smiling is a key factor too. Good points Marty!

Something smells funny...

Must be my hair on fire, hold on!!!

Paul Murphy — Thu, 02/25/2010 - 11:22am

Thanks Marty

Strange that a tiny line used to fill a space can represent an entire lifetime. Ever notice everyone's dash is the same. Because we are all given the same opportunity to make that dash the very best Dash we can.

What a grrreat visual!!

Thanks, Marty, for sharing that story... I had read it a long time ago and loved it then, but being reminded of the expediency of "living as though today were your last" is a good thing! Here is a wonderful video about The Dash: http://www.thedashmovie.com/

Beautiful Marty!

Marty, I just wanted to say that I love this article. It speaks to me about truth and life. There are times when I am doing my marketing and I see the corruption, greed, and ego of people and it is sad. This article puts things in perspective, people should realize that life is precious and we make our own choices. I believe in truth and integrity and this article validates that there is still hope and good people in this world. Thank you for lifting my spirits. Your friend Therese

Enjoy the Dash!

One of my favorite quotes by 'unknown' illustrates the dash -

"In the end its not the years in your life that count. It is the life in your years."

Enjoy and make the best of every moment and opportunity!

Thanks Marty!

Vicki Berry — Fri, 02/26/2010 - 6:07pm

The Dash

The dash is very important...it really is your life and how you lived it. You will not be remembered for all the money you made...you will be remembered for the love you shared.
