Rushing Around And Going Nowhere Fast
Every morning and evening I have the unfortunate pleasure of being part of the rat-race hustle. You know the one I am on about where everyone rushes from one cramped spot to another but they are not really going any quicker.
This morning was no different, but there was one guy who stood out to me more than the rest. I think it was his brightly colored hunters hat an odd sight in the UK.
Anyway. The train I catch departs the station at 07:38. The time is currently 07:32. The train is generally on time, but never early.
Mr Bright Hat pushes past me and everyone else to get onto the platform.
Note: I do not rush and I am never late, my journey is well planned and executed to perfection.
Having reached the platform 10 seconds before me Mr Bright Hat has to now wait for the train just like the rest of us.
07:38 the train arrives. Its the morning rat-race rush so there are no seats (there never is). The train doors open and normal train platform etiquette is to let people off the train first before boarding. Not Mr Bright Hat. As soon as the doors crack open he is rushing in, pushing once again past everyone.
I board the train and find my standing position. Mr Bright Hat ends up standing 3 feet away from me. I contemplate the 3 foot rule, but decide against it. ;-)
The train takes on average 25 mins to the next station where the majority of people get off.
As we pull into the station Mr Bright Hat jostles his way to the door. The train stops, the doors open and he is off, faster than Usain Bolt.
We are now in the one of the biggest commuter spots in the UK – Kings Cross. You can get to nearly any part of London from here. Most people walk in the same direction that I do to get to their connecting underground / metro trains.
The rush is now on to see who can get to the top of the stairs first (I have seen this race cause actual physical fights). Mr Bright Hat had to of won the race or so I thought.
When I got to the top of the stairs, there he was being cautioned by station security for what I can only assume was being a complete a**.
With a slight chuckle to myself I continue on my journey, then whoosh, Mr Bright Hat comes flying past me. Clearly his brush with the Station Cops hasn’t deterred his foolish behavior.
It’s a bit of a walk to my connecting platform, so I continue my journey listening to Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump telling me Why They Want Me To Be Rich – great book by the way.
2 or so minutes later I am on my connecting platform and who do you think is standing there?
Mr Bright Hat, all puffed out and sweating buckets!
The train pulls up and I am curious to see if he has learned anything. The doors open and he goes flying in, again with no regard to the people getting off the train.
What a complete a***hole. How many times can a person keep making the same mistake?
He has used up much more energy than me, pissed off more people than me, he is now in a much worse state than me and he has got no further than me.
Going quicker is not always the fastest way to get to where your going. If you take your time, learn the facts, use your common sense, be courteous and respectful to others, you will reach your destination in a much better state than the person who is rushing around and getting nowhere fast.
I Relate This To My Business…
…I have many ideas of what I can do rushing around in my head and in the beginning I started many of them, but I never seemed to have the time to finish any. Then another idea will emerge and I’d start working on that.
In the end I got nothing done. It is only when I slowed down, made a plan which worked with the time I had that progress started to be made.
Don’t be like how I was and how Mr Bright Hat is. Take your time to do it the right way. It will seem slower but it will get you to where you want to go quicker.
You would use less energy (or waste less money) and you would be in a better state when you arrive.
Happy Traveling

Wow Dwayne,
You have become quite a writer! This is an excellent analogy to business and life.
Out here in the West, we drive everywhere and trust me -- there are plenty of "Mr. Bright Hats" out here, too (LOL)
