The Art Of Leadership 3 – Communication
On my quest to develop myself and others into becoming great Alpha Networkers and top leaders in our field I have been looking at the attributes that leaders have to have to be real leaders.
To be a top leader and remaining as one you have to commit to on going self development and growth.
People who follow you as a leader expect you to fulfill your role properly. They will look to you for guidance, advice and as a role model who they can aspire to be in their lives and business.
This is my 3rd installment of The Art Of Leadership you can refresh you minds on the previous 2 installments via the links below.

Communication
Affecting others with words, phrases and sentences. Having the ability to influence or persuade a person or a group of people into positive action verbally or in writing. This is where a big part of your future fortune is.
You have heard the saying “The pen is mightier than the sword”. IT'S TRUE.
All parts of leadership are very important but communication is probably the most important skill which you should be developing continually as a leader.
Jim Rohn, master leader and mentor taught that if you want to get good at communication you have to do it everyday by way of training so that on the day that you really need to use your communication skills you will have the gift, style, sharpness, clarity, substance and emotion needed which will bring you the outcome you desire.
Recently we have seen how the written word has brought Mike Dillard huge success on the sale of his What’s Working Now product and how our buddy Jason Better was crowned a top affiliate for the same product by using great communication.
It is undeniable how important and valuable being a good communicator is. So lets jump into it.
4 Parts To Great Communication
1. Have Something Good To Say
Very obvious. Success is a study of the obvious.
In order to have something good to say you have to KNOW what you are talking about and who you are talking to.
In simple terms this is ‘nothing in, nothing out’. You can not talk about what you don’t know to people you know nothing about.
To successfully communicate what you would like your audience to do you will have to have to PREPARE what you want to say to them to get them to take action.
Preparation is what will determine if what you have to to say is good or not.
The real power to preparation and communication is when what you say is only the TIP of what you know.
A lot of people tell us more than what they know. Don’t be one of these people.
If you have prepared well you will be able to effectively elaborate on a topic and provide great information over and above what is required.
2. Say It Well
When you have something good to say you have to learn how to say it well.
Once you have gathered the knowledge you have to know how to TRANSLATE it into meaningful words which will move, inspire and motivate your audience
You learn how to say it well through REPETITION on purpose, with a view to getting better.
The more you write or speak the more you will learn how to use emotion to get your message across. You can not gain this skill unless you are doing the activity.
Since I have been writing a blog post a day I have been getting better at saying it well, because of that I have more people returning to read what I have to say and more people wanting to join me in my business.
Learn to say it with sincerity, from the heart with noble intent. This is how you really connect with your audience. When they feel that you really care for them and their needs they will be more willing to act upon your call to action.
Learn how to get to the point. Say it accurately but KEEP IT SHORT. The human attention span is not that long, so get what you need to say across in a timely fashion.
Expand your vocabulary. VOCABULARY is the how we use words to interpret what we want people to see. The larger your vocabulary range the more people you will be able to reach.
3. Know / Read Your Audience
In writing or in speech you have to know if your audience is tuned in to what you are saying or not.
You may need to adapt your approach so that what you are saying isn’t missed or overlooked.
How you come across is vital to good communication. If you are well prepared and you are saying it well with great vocabulary but it is not having any effect on your audience you have to make changes.
4. Feel Me – Intensity
Words loaded with emotion. There is no greater power.
Your words maybe heard but if you can not touch / move / inspire the listener/s with your spirit, emotions and beliefs then you are not going to be effective.
Jim Rohn explains it like this – If I had a small pin which I throw at you, it lands on your hand or face. You will feel it a little but it wont have much effect. If I now attached the same pin to an iron bar and whack you across the face with it, I am sure you will feel it a lot more and it will have a dramatic effect on you – Gotta love the way Jim put things.
Your words are the pin. Your spirit, emotions and beliefs are the iron bar. This is what you use to get your audience to act.
Real persuasion is putting all that you are (your knowledge and experiences) into all that you say. You are not only heard you are felt.
Intensity is what great leaders use to rally people to war and to lay down their life for the country or for a noble cause.
…Its An On Going Skill
Like I said before, communication is the most important skill of leadership. It is a massive topic to cover. Each of these four sections alone can have books dedicated to them.
If you want to be a really effective leader you need to be continually studying and developing your communications skills.
These four point are what I have learned from Jim and from observing the top leaders in network marketing.
It always amazes me how Mike can send out 1 email and have a huge response to it. Not only is it a huge response, it is the response he wanted to get. He gets this because he has mastered effective communication.
Talk to Me
What would you like to add or debate?
I love hearing your views. I am still a leader in training everyday I acquire more skills which move me closer to the level of leadership that I want to achieve.
I learn a lot through your comments and emails, I think we all do. Make the Comment Arena your sounding board.
Share The Skills
In network marketing if your not striving to become an alpha networking top leader you will be just a follower. Share this with your online community of leaders, bring them here so they can have their voice heard.

Hey Dwayne,
This is very good!
When I write or talk to a group of people, I get in the MINDSET of what I'm writing or talking about...
I feel the pain of what it's like to struggle when I talk about struggle...
I feel the joy when I'm talking about reaching goals...
I let people know that I am a REAL person just like them.
This is a huge part of becoming a leader -- the ability to embrace and own up to your own flaws... and air it out like "dirty laundry."
The "old-school" gurus know how to do this very well...Watch them next time you go to a hotel meeting and see if you don't notice what I'm talking about!
Communication is 95%
Hey Dwayne,
This is huge. I'd say communication and relationships make up 95% of our business in network marketing. I like what Derek said about getting the mindset of what you're talking about and being able to relate to your audience. Your section on "Say it well" is really good, people need to get that.
