The power of the mind

I’ve just got home from a personal development conference that was held in St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Not the worst place in the world to hold a conference.

My partner Marjorie and I went together to share the experience. We had a few days either side of the three day event to really enjoy what the Carribean islands had to offer and it really is beautiful.

The conference was held in the Sugar Bay Resort right on a sandy beach with amazing views over the Caribbean Sea. The conference was designed to help overcome your limiting beliefs, remove the shackles of the conditioning that makes 99% of all decisions for you.

There were many speakers that were extremely inspirational, leaders in their fields. It was three days of hightened emotions and challenging insights into the power of the mind. Beliefs… if that’s what you think then that is what you will get. Some powerful exercises we participated in designed to push the boundaries of what the mind could believe. We broke an arrow against our throat, bent a piece of re-bar against our throat and walked on fire, all intensely powerful experiences.

Prior and during the conference I had been reading a book of Eckhart Tolle called ‘The Power Of Now’. About learning to be present, to disassociate with the ego mind. The mind is a tool, we pick it up when it is required and then we put it back down until it is needed again… only we don’t seem to know how to put it down. It goes from one scenario to another, past and future, all day long.

When we think of the past we have many different emotions tied to every event or situation we have experienced, good and bad. And the future creates similar emotions even though it hasn’t happened yet. That uncertainty, the unknown.

But if you operate in the present you don’t have the burden of the past dragging on you, nor do you have the uncertainty of the future creating doubt and underlying fear. The power of creation is at your fingertips when you operate in the now, whatever decision you make, you are directly controlling your future. It’s like we always have an unlimited power source available if we stop thinking we are our mind and get focused on the now.

So between the conference and the book I was reading, as well as the incredibly likeminded people we met and shared the experience with, I have come home with so many thoughts to consider. I love the week after these events when you can analyse the entire experience and grow from it and move forward rapidly with the momentum that it creates in all that you do.
