Value in The Valley and How To Make The Best of It

Value in the valley and how to make the best of it, is actually based on the book by Iyanla Vanzant the author of Acts of Faith.  Although I read this book several times during the past years, I found my mind straying back to some of the topics which made me find my way back to the bookshelf and start reading some of the chapters.

Iyanla Vanzant’s describes the guide through life’s dilemmas as one in which people find themselves in when they have been disappointed, betrayed, rejected, abandoned, or just plain old scared to let go, then they are most likely in the valley or they have been in the valley.

What is Value in The Valley?

My definition of the valley is for example when you have lost your job, your sources of income which will most likely make you depressive and confused because you really do not know how to get out of this valley.  Most likely you did not have a backup plan so that you have absolutely no clue which is the first step to take.  To add insult to injury you just paid a trip to overseas to South Africa where you went on your first safari and had a really wonderful time.  Things look grey and it is at this point really legitimate for you to feel low or down. Let me tell you, you are not alone in the valley.  We have seen entire countries that are in the valley for example Greece.  The whole country is in the valley going through one of the most trying times in its history.  In terms of its economy the prosperity measures that they have introduced it is going to take an act of God to get Greece out of their current problems.  It is going to be the political will of its Government and the patience of its people to ensure that they get out of the valley. There are entire companies in the valley.  The British Petroleum also known BP is going through one of the most trying times in its corporate history.  They are responsible for one of the worst environment incidences in their corporate history.  BP is in the valley. How their leadership responses to this challenge will determine how they are going to emerge out of these incidences.

How About Individuals Who Are In The Valley:

Before we look at how or why people find themselves in the valley, we need to understand what or where the value in the valley is.  Let us think about something because what we do not want is to think that the valley is just one point that you need to get out of as quickly as possible.  You need to suffer, you need to spend time in the valley because if you do not suffer, if you do not learn from what put you in the valley you will find yourself back in the valley. We have seen history repeat itself.  Very many companies continue to fail because they do not learn from what they did wrong in the first place.

So What Value Is There To Be Found in The Valley?

Value in the valley offers you the chance to rediscover yourself.  You need to determine and find out who you are. Where is that person that you use to be successful, happy and that people liked to call.  Where is that person that people liked to work with? Who is that person?  Who are you? The best strategy is not an easy or rather a comfortable one.  It requires that you talk to your close friends, your family, people you trust who are ready to be honest with you. They may tell you things you may not want to hear but for that you should be grateful as they are offering you material that you can work around to prepare to get yourself out of the valley.

Finding Value in The Valley Means Renewing Your Energy:

To find value in the valley, you want to look at your mind, your body and spirit. You need to determine what is it that motivates you to get out of the bed daily.  You need to understand what is that brings you joy.  What is it that you like to do?  What are the things that will cleanse your spirit, your mind so that it will make you smile and healthy.  What are the things that will literally people want to be around you.  Take the time to understand those things.

Understanding and Repositioning Yourself In The Valley:

To understand yourself during the time that you are in the valley means you need to re-position yourself in readiness for success.   It does not make any sense to spend time suffering if you do not come out as a changed person.  You need to find out what is it you can do to add value to your business, family, and friends and loved ones.  What do you do to add value to the community?  It does not always have to be economic benefit, look at the social benefit, emotional benefit not to mention the physical benefit.  Once you find out what you can do best and uniquely better than someone else and what you have to offer matters a lot to someone then that is what I consider to be the value in the valley.

Developing effective leadership skills should not only be limited to leading but also to acquiring education and adding more value to the competence of your team members
