Pros and Cons of Streaming Video
Streaming
video is video that is constantly received by, and normally displayed
to, the end-user while it is being delivered by the provider. The name
refers to the delivery method of the medium rather than to the medium
itself. The distinction is usually applied to video that is distributed
over telecommunications networks, as most other delivery systems are
either inherently streaming (e.g. radio, television) or inherently
non-streaming (e.g. books, video cassettes, audio CDs). The verb ‘to
stream’ is also derived from this term, meaning to deliver media in
this manner.
When it comes to ease of use, streaming video is the preferred
choice of most individuals who are new to computers and how they work.
It is much easier to view a video on a website than trying to download
it to your hard drive and trying later to remember where you put it
Once the user has arrived at the web site that has the video they
want to watch on it, they can then simply click on ‘Play’ to watch the
video. He or she can also ‘Rewind’, ‘Fast Forward’, or ‘Stop’ it when
they wish, just like when playing a downloaded video.
One advantage to using ‘Streaming’ video rather than downloaded is
that, because the file is already on the website and always being
streamed directly from the source, it will load much faster. Thus, the
user can watch it right away. Which in today’s hurried society, is
preferred to waiting for it to download, having to find it on the users
computer and then load before it can be watched.
This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the video being downloaded.
Streaming video does have it’s drawbacks, however. To use it you
must be connected to the internet, wherein if you download the video,
then once it has completed downloading, you can watch it at your own
leisure. You will no longer need to be connected to the internet, as
you do with streaming video.
There are many times that the computer will pick a place to save the
video, and if the individual does not pay attention to the save
location, they may be confused later as to where the video file went.
By using streaming video, you don’t need to worry about this.
So really, the decision of which to use rests solely on the individual user.
