Transcript: Radio Randy - Episode #4

Just a few days ago I received a private message on BN from one of my new friends here telling me about his young daughter's experience with Santa Claus.  I could almost see the image of what happened as he told the story.

To make it short, she didn't get on too well with him!

She was probably thinking, "What's this fat, old, funny looking man want from me anyhow?  He's invading my space and he dresses funny too."

The problem is that Santa Claus had done nothing to first build the relationship.

Santa had the audacity to ask this little girl to sit on his lap on their first date!

Can you believe the thoughtlessnes of that approach to getting a small child, just a beginner in this world, to try and sit on your lap without even having a relationship first.

Before he can even expect to get that close to someone he just met, and make it a good experience for both of them, he has to build the relationship, he has to create value.

Santa would have been wise to first visit with this little girl and be friendly.

Had he given her a candy cane (something of value) and then said, "Hey, I can get you what you want if you come up here and tell me what it is.", it would have been more enjoyable for both of them, and the little girl will keep coming back to Santa over and over again, year in and year out, because they have a real relationship.

The little girl keeps the relationship open because she and Santa are friends, not because of what he can give her, but because she likes him and finds they have common interests (toys, dolls, etc.).  She trusts him and has every reason to believe that Santa will continue to add value in her life and will always be her friend, and she in turn wants to add value in his life (cookies and milk, and love.)

Remember the lessons a child can teach us, because deep in the heart of all of us is a child that just wants to be treated with respect and care.

Your Forever Friend,

Randy Enman

Great work

I love the way you bring life lessons into a  story makes it easy to understand.

Learning from a child...

That is such a great story to learn from.
Children are the ones that teach us to create frienships that last forever,
but most of all they teach us how to dream again...

I appreciate you,

Imagine the changes from when we were kids!

Excellent article Randy

I could relate to this.  My little ones eyes pop open when they see Santa but both are hesitant to sit on his lap the first time they see him.  I love your writing style.
