"REJECTION: Here's Why You're Failing With Your Prospects!"

In my early days of network marketing, I learned a small lesson that paid off big for me down the road.  It opened up the floodgates for my success, and I’ll tell you how.

As I went from door-to-door like the UPS guy placing flyers for my business, I realized I might as well have been selling air to fish.

The more trips I made to Kinko’s to make copies of a thousand flyers, the further and further I went into debt.

Finally, I got a response once from an interested prospect.  It was a lady on the phone who said she was just “curious”.

That should have been the red light, but it meant nothing to a desperate and broke newbie entrepreneur like myself.

I ignored her “curious” comment, and I proceeded to prospect her with the usual questions every upline member will teach you.

I asked her why she was interested in a home business.

I asked her what she would gain from being self-employed.

I asked her how much she felt it was possible for her to make a six-figure income in one year.

But before I could complete my questioning, she abruptly cut me off because she wasn’t “interested”.

Ouch.

Wasn’t I supposed to be in the driver seat?  After all, I was the one qualifying HER, and not vice versa! Right?

Here's my first lesson in this industry.

I needed to tell her immediately that I’m only looking for serious people, not someone who’s simply “curious”.  That should have been the end of the conversation.  Here’s what happened on my next prospecting call.

I got another “curious” person on the line, and I told him that I was looking for serious leaders only.  This time, I disqualified him and told him that my business was probably NOT the right fit for him.

Before I got a chance to hang up, he started firing away MORE questions about my business.

Now, he was really curious.  He wanted it MORE since he knew how serious I was, and that he probably couldn’t join my business after I made it "out of reach".

That was my lesson, and what you as a home business owner can take from it.

Whether you like it or not, only 1% to 5% of prospects looking for a business will join your opportunity.  A whopping 97% of people that join a business drop out within the first 3 months.

In other words, statistics say you should disqualify at least 95% of the people you talk to because they’re not going to be “fit” for your opportunity.  Find the real leaders and "home run hitters" for your downline.

You can then say goodbye to the whiners and complainers that do nothing and drop out before they get anywhere near you ;-)

I went door to door like the UPS guy too!

I felt your pain as you stated what your experience was. I also feel like network marketing is my "Get out of jail free" card. In fact I started to write a book that is titled "Get out of jail free". Thanks for the article!

Good Advice Shiraz!

Thanks for the advice Shiraz! A lot of people come into this business thinking everything will be handed to them on a silver platter! When it doesn't happen, they get frustrated and drop out, bad mouthing network marketing! It would be nice if every "newbie" could read your blog, and get a little understanding of what it's really like out there. God Bless.

Yes you hit it right on the head. We can't take the "curious" and make them successful. If we are needy then we get the needy. No money or success there just frustration for all involved. I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel with Magnetic sponsoring and Traffic. I get it now I need to implement it. Thanks for showing us that we are not alone in our struggle.

Shiraz, On Point, As Usual

Man Shiraz, I love reading your articles. You always pound the nail on the head. You even make me hear the ringing of metal on metal as the hammer strikes the nail!

Right on the nose

You hit it right on the nose. I need to start eliminating the "curious" ones and attract the serious ones. Thanks for the great advice.

WOW! Lots of good points

You are right! I disqualify about 95% of people because I am looking for likeminded people like myself, people who are serious about being successful in their own home based business, not just people who are curious about getting more information. All though I do give them the information they requested. 9 times out of ten they drop off the face of the planet and you never hear from them again anyway, if they are just curious.

Right on the money

Your article is right on the money and it makes sense that we should only prospect with the serious people. There's little reason for us to do therapy for everyone when they don't express the interest in the first place.

We should only find the aces and we don't have to deal with attrition.

So true -thanks

This is so true -thanks for the great tip. The key to all success is indeed to make people want to know what the business is about. I'll remember this tip the next time I speak to someone.

Down that road too...

As inexperienced entrepreneurs, in one way or another we have walked down that embarassing road of prospecting the curios instead of the serious. Lucky for us, we hit that fork in the road and head in the new direction!

Telling it like it is....Awesome Article

Shiraz, I'm the new kid on the block and just received a blessing. Oh how we struggle when we don't know. Hosea 4:6 "My people are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge".
